One of my scanners has lines behind the glass that aren't supposed to be there. Normally it doesn't bother me but when I scan an image like this it really does. The thing is, the streaks are grossly apparent on my laptop's LCD but gone on my secondary CRT. I have another scanner but it takes up space I don't really have. Can you see the streaks?

I have a CRT monitor and I can't see any streaks at all! Hope this helps! ;)

The whole left side is loaded with streaks. You could say it is part of your photography LOL. My other flatbed used to do that too.You can change settings to try and lessen them.

I see streaks and finger prints and I'm using a LCD.

Question the question. Answer the question. Question the answer...

I wish I knew what I was gonna say :oP

CRT here too, this morning before the sun came streaming in, I could see light variations on the left side. Really had to look for it.

When I used the basic Shadow/Highlights function in Photo-shop CS, It really becomes noticeable! Just posting this example, so everyone SEES the issues!

Could be a few things going on here, depending on the brand/model of scanner and it's age. I would check your owners manual for general troubleshooting and call the manufacturer (if its still under warranty. Most have support hotlines that may assist in these situations. Also check their webiste as another resource.

Here are some links that may be helpful:

@L8RDAZE Thanks for the image -- now I see the issue. @TobinLam Almost certain this would be caused by the sensor in the scanner. BTW, does anyone remember getting a FAX with strong vertical lines? If you saw that on every incoming FAX, it was a problem in your FAX machine's 'print' element. If you saw that on every FAX from a specific location, it was a problem in their FAX's image scanner. -- And remember how much fun it was to convince them to get it fixed? It was very hard to get past, "But my FAXes look OK." LOL Doing a 'copy' function to test your own FAX machine wasn't always conclusive -- you still needed an incoming FAX with/without lines to be sure. MGD

The streaks are on the back-side of the glass where I can't reach them. I using an all-in-one printer/scanner/copier from HP. This is my second one because the first also had the same problem. I bought a dedicated scanner and it doesn't have this problem but it also takes up real estate that I don't have anymore. I think I'll probably just go get the negative scanned.

TwoPynts ( ) posted Mon, 03 October 2005 at 3:40 PM

Yes, I saw it in the first image too. Generally, a good quality dedicated scanner should not have that issue (except for the fingerprints) so you are getting what you pay for. HP is not known to be a top quality company when it comes to scanners. You probably can open up the scanner and clean the glass, I've done it before, but it is not always an easy task and could void any warranty you may have. A thought. It seems like the streaks could be from reflections of the underlying scan bed. If so, no amnt. of cleaning will help. Good luck!

I can see the streaks right under the glass but I can't figure out how to get to them. Ther aren't any screws I can find.

@TobinLam > There aren't any screws I can find. What is the hp model number? MGD

TwoPynts ( ) posted Tue, 04 October 2005 at 12:32 PM

The website for my old scanner had a how to on how to replace the scan bulb that showed me how to get inside, perhaps HP has something similar.

It's an HP psc 2175. I just lifted the top part like I was replacing the cartridges and didn't see anything that could be unscrewed that might help. The top seems to be snapped in place pretty securely. A quick search on google hasn't turned up anything.

MGD ( ) posted Wed, 05 October 2005 at 9:53 AM

@TobinLam > HP psc 2175 Thanks for the model number. It looks quite similar to my G85xi. The scanner bed of my G85xi seems to have been made all in one piece -- perhaps it was grown as a single piece. (If you have read John Varley's "Titan", "Wizard", "Demon" ... you'll know what I mean). In any case, it looks as if it was designed so that it couldn't be repaired. (just kidding ... maybe) Later ... when I am really awake (coffee, increase alert status, ... coffee ... rinse, repeat), I'll look again at the puzzle ... perhaps I'll see seams, clips, hidden screws, ... . May take some pictures ... (a chance to do some macro work) MGD

I've already tried to pry parts off but the only ones, or one rather, that I got off is user-installed and that part seems like a waste. It is definitely not user-friendly.
