i was to scared to ask when i was trying to figure that one out, incase it was something simple and i made myself look stupid..took me weeks to figure out what i had to do.. Only thing in the long run that made me stupid was not asking the simple question.
I have opinions of my own -- strong
opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

What would you use such crazy stuff for, AS?

How do you even draw something like that map? I had this problem before when I was trying to follow OriginalMoron's modelling tutorial. My hand isn't steady enough to draw a circle like that, and I can't figure out how to end up with that sort of soft effect, which results in nice rounded corners. No matter how many times I try smoothing it in Bryce, it never looks right.

...I know that problem!
As a suggestion (haven't tried it, but should work)...:
If you create a couple of tori (toruses??) in Bryce, scaled appropriately and postioned such that they lie 1/2 way into the ground plane and then, (to get the final effect like wot Baz 'as got), boolean -ve with a couple of very thin cubes set at right angles, you should be able to come up with something similar to Baz's layout.
Then make a height map using the top camera......
Import result and apply to lattice....
Would that work??
(Just thinking as I type..) :-))
Cheers,
Diolma
(Edited 'cos the 1st post didn't make sense to me. The current post is a little better. Not a lot, but better..)

Ha! THAT got yer attention... Just kidding...that textured 3D preview works in regular OLD Bryce. The window that is titled "3D Preview", has an arrow at the top-right, just click it and choose rendered preview. Its always been there. ;o) AS

Drawing that circle. All Done in Photoshop, with selections. Nobody's hand can draw circles like that. But, diolma also has the other way thought out to create terrains! ;o) AS

/me doesn't have photoshop:-)) Yeah, OK I've now got PSP9, but only recently - I'm still trying to work out how to use it... I'm OK when modifying stuff in PSP (and my other 2D apps), but not when creating in them... And I like finding (if I can) alternative solutions! Hmmm.... A(lternative) S(olutions)myth????? Oh, well, never mind.. Cheers, Diolma

I was almost totally wrong, it was a very tweaked version of the old "Classic Bryce Snow", with all my little twists on it. (I especially took the stupid blue color out of the rock) Here's my version for download. (at the Link) *Note - You may notice if you look at this in the mat lab, I have a bead set beside Reflection with no value. With this mat in particular, doing that gives it a very subtle dark grunge in some areas. Giving it a value would start turning those areas blue from the sky anyway. As always, with any mat, tweak until it looks good in your scene, nothings sacred, lol. * Note also, with Terrains - when rendering something like above, I will re-size my Terrains 10x bigger. So for example, I normally resize the terrains to simplify their unit dimensions anyway and make them sized at 80-20-80. But, in this case I made it 800-200-800. What this SEEMS to do is give the mat more surface to look just a little more detailed. The look can be subtle, but, stack up a bunch of "subtles", and you start getting more realistic. Or, at sometimes least more interesting looking. ;o) Just fyi. AgentSmith
