I need a way to take the shadow of a supposedly semi-transparent outfit and make it look as if some light is passing through it. The shadow of the person wearing the outfit would still be totally black, but the outfit's shadow would be greyer. I hope that's clear.I've attached a test render to show what I mean. The gown was originally the morphing fantasy gown from Daz. follow the white arrow and hopefully you'll see what I mean. The gown's shadow should not be as dark as the figure's. help, please.

Is Raytracing on? Firefly render? High quality? Shadow Size?

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

Ray tracing is on. It is firefly render and the compression quality is max.

another note. These are settings I always start out with. normally they're more than enough.

You can either use raytraced shadows or a large shadow map (at least as large as the largest dimension of your render).

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

I switched the main light to ray traced shadows and turned the shadows off on the other two. But it doesn't seem to work- the shadow looks broken.

I think your best bet would be.... 1) Render the girl and dress with a 0.5 strength shadow with your original settings (on the main light) 2) Remove her dress and do a shadow-only render and merge with the render from step 1) in photoshop.

I rendered the dress with the 0.5 shadow and when it was done, I noticed something that might have a baring on things. Look at the bottom of the gown, where the trim is. At that point, the light only has one layer of gown and pattern to get through- and there is a difference in the shadow. BUT, looking behind her, past both sides of the gown and her, we get the totally black shadow. I'm thinking there's too much pattern in the gown to get the difference in the shadows like I'm trying for.
