Subject: Poser 6

Rainfeather ( ) posted Tue, 22 November 2005 at 10:52 AM · edited Tue, 22 October 2024 at 12:54 PM

I just ordered Poser6 and supposedly be arriving tomorrow. I had a good little (and i mean little - a couple of days or so)run with Daz where I had such a great time with whatever freebies available with the program. The reason why I opted on Poser6 is because I noticed most of the great artists out there uses it as opposed to Daz. I have been so excited so I figured I should look around the forums to see what kinds of remedies there are should I encounter a problem, sort of an early troubleshooting should a problem occur. I even saved some of the problems others have experienced with it's possible solution(s). Now, here's what scares me. When it comes to all these program jargons, I haven't a single clue what most mean. I am hoping that as I progress with Poser6, it will all make sense to me. Another thing, for years I have worked purely on my manual skills (sketching, painting with oils and acrylics as mediums) so this is going to be the very first time I am going to try anything technical. I guess what I am looking for really is some encouragement lol...that it will be all worth it once I have more understanding with the whole technical what-have-yous.

The manual that comes with Poser 6 explains some of it. Granted, it's not very well-written, but it does answer some of your questions.
Also, click on the Poser Forum banner at the top of this page and that will take you to the Backroom. On the menu at the right, select "Tutorials" and there you will find pretty much everything you need to get started.
If you ahve any firther questions, post them in this forum and the people here will help you.

I havent posted this in a while so here we go

Tygers Guide to the forums. (or Tygers observations so far)

  1. Newbies are not flamed for being newbies. Ask most anything you like, youll almost always get an answer. It may be a link to a thread where someone else asked the same thing (usually with a note to search the forum before asking), it may be a tutorial, it may be directions or it may be its in the manual/readme file etc..

  2. Violate copyright, IP or trademark, you will be crucified.

  3. Try to maintain some illusion of being on topic. Not only of a specific thread but of the particular discussion area. This is a courtesy to the other members who have a limited schedule (or attention span) and can only read so many threads in a day. The moderators sometimes move off topic threads to more appropriate boards.

  4. Use the Nudity and Violence tags when you show nudity or violence. Be conservative in your estimations. There are people who view from work who will not get in trouble for viewing the forums but will for viewing porn.

  5. Controversial subjects breed long and fruitless threads. Enter at your own risk.

  6. For better or worse, people here seem to complain more than any other place I have seen. Policy X isnt fair, product Y doesnt work as advertised, etc, etc. Dont get me wrong, some of these are legitimate complaints, but almost every one of them would be better served if they were sent to .say.somebody that could do something to correct the situation, instead of aired in a public forum.

  7. Grow a thick skin before you ask for a critique of your work. Many well meaning people express themselves poorly in such situations.

  8. Dont correct others spelling or grammar. Between typing errors and people for whom English is a second language, we could drive a herd of English teachers insane.

  9. Moderators are only human. The downfall of having a popular message board is that your moderators can never seem to read every message. If you think there is a violation. Report it thru the appropriate channels (that is NOT by starting a new thread and complaining about how the moderators never enforce the TOS)

welcome to your new addiction.
Surrender your credit card to a responsible adult immediately for you are no longer considered sane nor responsible.

Perusing the tutorials in the backroom...thank you very much for the info. Wouldn't have noticed the banner had it not been pointed out to my attention. Again, my thanks =)

A great proxy for the manual is Dr. Geep's tutorials (see the link). BTW, the lingo (which will come) should not scare you, it's the uncontrollable urge to play with the program that you should be afraid of. :)

Lol, thanks very much Tyger purr...I think I can comply to all of the above. As for the credit card, too late...what I need now is a second or third job.

PabloS ( ) posted Tue, 22 November 2005 at 11:30 AM

Not to stray too far off topic, I humbly suggest Tyger's guide add: When asking a question in the forum, use a descriptive subject line. Lots of folks that possess the key to your problem will bypass a discussion topic labeled merely "Help!"

Rainfeather ( ) posted Tue, 22 November 2005 at 11:32 AM

ah, the artists and the artistic minds...you have no clue how many sleepless nights i have gone through. when i'm working on a sketch for example, if i am able, i stay up for days in a row driven to finish it. i am, without a doubt, aware that once i got started with poser i will become a hermit, never to be seen again in the social scene. but, the winter's long where i am and i welcome the thought of spending hours indoors where it's warm.

PabloS, my thanks for the link...I am possitive that it will come in handy in the future (I have it bookmarked). You guys are wonderful, I haven't even started yet and I'm getting a lot of help already (not to mention a lot of encouragement). Thanks again!!!

Tyger Purr, I couldn't have put it better myself, especially the bit about the credit card, mine gets into regular melt down [rofl]. thefixer, poser coord. P.S. For the benefit of Rainfeather, a coordinator doesn't have the same clout as a moderator but......! [roflmao].

Injustice will be avenged.

Hi, Rainfeather - I recently posted a response to a very similar message by StormyFrost. Humbly submitted for your approval is my nutshell guide to FOUR REALLY BASIC TERMS of Poser lingo that you will frequently encounter on the boards and elsewhere. Might help get you a leg up on understanding the oodles of info you will see around here.

One small addition..

When you DO come across a problem (and you will, we all have, and if they would admit it, most still do from time to time) it's always best to include as much info as possible.
Particularly relevant are:

  • Poser version (not relevant here 'cos we know you're waiting for P6), but next time...
  • Your machine specifications (especially if the problem is something on the order of "I was just trying to xxxx when Poser crashed/stopped/deleted all of my hard drive.."
  • Screen shots of the Materials room settings (if it's a texturing problem) the Cloth room settings (if it's a dynamic clothing problem) etc (I'm sure you get the idea)..

And sometimes it's useful to know what figure you are working with (if any). They can be very different.

As in any detective work, sometimes a bit of info, no matter how insignificant it seems, can crack the case and reveal the criminal..:-))

Cheers,
Diolma

And welcome to the Wonderful, Wild, Whacky, Wallet-emptying World of Poser!!

Diolma, I have seen that post of yours whilst flipping through the posts and I have even copied and pasted it into a file. I am very thankful to all of you and can't wait to get started. By the way, the package arrived earlier than expected so you guys will be hearing more from me, lol. In the meantime, I am cleaning up as much programs and deleting those I won't need to free up more space. Many thanks once again to all of you!

Rainfeather ( ) posted Tue, 22 November 2005 at 4:53 PM

oh, and i will try to be as specific with whatever problems i come across with - that's a promise. that's one of the things i've learned reading through the "help" posts. i guess i'll have to put the 4 Ps into practice once again. the 4 Ps being: Patience, Perseverance, Persistence and Profanity...lol...darn, thought i didn't have to worry about that after the divorce.

Practice makes perfect, the more you do the better your images will get. Don't be discouraged in the beginning if your stuff doesn't look like images you admire, with time you will develop your own style. Daz Studio 1.0 is a new application, that is the reason why you've not seen very many images done with it by prominent artists. It is still largely under development, but in my opinion shows great potential. In many ways it is more intuitive and easier to use than Poser. I've created many pleasing images in it. Don't sell it short, in the future you might want to give it a whirl and hell it's free! But right now it is a good idea to concentrate on using one application well, so Pose away.
