Subject: Totally blank Poser screen. Help please.

Attached Link: http://home.earthlink.net/~alocsin/Test/test.pz3

The link (104KB) is a PZ3 file with a the remains of a simple figure I created in 3DS Max. I isolated the problem to this part of the figure, and removed all the other parts. When I try to open this PZ3 file, (or any Poser file containing this figure), Poser displays a totally blank screen (except for the menu bar) and shows the hourglass. Eventually, the hourglass becomes an arrow but the screen remains blank. Apparently, something is there, because when I get out, Poser asks me if I want to save the file. However, nothing ever shows up. I'm also able to import this Poser scene into a new Poser file. What's bizarre is the figure works perfectly fine with Poser on a different computer (which is older and slower). Both computers use the same screen resolution, though the non-working one has a 19" screen and the working one has a 17" screen. Here are the specs on the computers: -NON-WORKING Pentium Pro, 700 MHz, 255 MB RAM, 20.5 GB of disk space remaining, Windows 98, Version 4.10 - WORKING Pentium II, 200 MHz, 64MB RAM, 586 MB of disk space remaining, Windows 95, 4.00.95e Both computers use a screen resolution of 1024 x 768, 16-bit, high-color. Thanks in advance. azl

It worked on my machine (PIII 600MHz, 128mb RAM, GeForce 2 card). When I opened it up, it asked me for the file "Soffit.jpg" which I don't have, so I hit cancel. It didn't come across any missing files after that and it loaded item.

Then...I opened the file in a text editor and noticed something strange.

test1.jpg

Right at the beginning of the .pz3 is a movie reference (which usually references AVI or MOV files) pointing at a .pz3 file.

Azl, I can't exactly reproduce the problem on my computer, but I would take that movie reference out of your pz3 and give that a try.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the effort, JKeller, but all PZ3 have that animation code in front of them. The problem is with the Wall figure itself, I think, and not the PZ3 file. I'm glad to hear that at least it's working on your system (so that's TWO systems its working on and one that it isn't working on) -- and sorry for the missing texture. I should've included that or removed it from the PZ3 file. azl

Doh! Closer comparison to my other pz3 files says you are right.

Are both your computers updated to 4.03? And when you say the screen remains blank, do you mean you are getting an empty scene in your viewport window, or are you saying you get no viewport window at all?

azl ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2001 at 12:57 PM

Both computers have Poser 4.0.3. When I say blank, I'm getting the Poser window, the Poser menu bar, but nothing else in the window (no parameter dials, no document windows, no controls, etc.)

Forgot to mention earlier that I am running Windows 98 (Second Edition 4.10.2222 A)

I wish I was getting the same problem...then I could help troubleshoot this some. Do you think it might have to do with the .jpg file? Have you moved that .jpg over onto your second computer? have you tried moving the file on your first computer so Poser won't find it?

Oh Oh AZL PISSED OFF His poser figures and they built a wall to keep him out :O

azl ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2001 at 6:12 PM

Well, at least this one Poser figures seems to have built a wall ;) It's not the JPG file at all. Problem occurs even when the texture is blank.

sounds like maybe a corrupt .obj file.... but that's just a stab in the dark :)

ScottA ( ) posted Sun, 11 March 2001 at 6:54 PM

azl. I looked quickly at your file. It opened fine with my machine also. The one thing that bothers me is the size of the window you saved that .pz3 file in. PC's and their video quirks are pretty strange. PC Video cards are tied directly to the OS. And they can do some really wacky things. Open the file on a working machine. Then change the scene window size to 350x350. Then re-save it. And see if it will open on your other machine. It's a long shot. But it can't hurt to try it. ScottA

Thanks, ScottA, but that didn't work either. I also played with changing the video settings on my computer -- no changes. Since this isn't happening with any other props, I'm assuming there is something in the Wall prop itself that's causing this. I looked at it in a text editor, but I'm not seeing anything different. azl

ScottA ( ) posted Mon, 12 March 2001 at 7:53 AM

Yeah. You're probably right. I guess the only thing left to try is export that prop as an .obj file using a computer that can open that .pz3 file. And See if that .obj will import on that non-working computer. I've heard that .3ds MAX files sometimes won't open in Poser. I didn't realize it was machine dependant as well. ScottA

Once I had a terrible problem with Poser... some Poser files, downloaded from the internet made the computer hang... not at once but after a few days using these files. tried many things, then i reinstalled poser on a different partition of my harddrive and the problem whas solved. Poser is a huge programm wich is very sensitive for its environment so handle it with a bit more care then the usual software... maby... your problem could also be found in the pc itself.

Steve "UVMapper" Cox solved the problem. He discovered the floor had three degenerate facets. Oddly, this was the only part of the prop that was brought in from the Poser Props Type subcategory -- the rest I made in 3DS max. Anyway, removing this floor prop, and reimporting the OBJ files with a new floor prop created in 3DS Max fixed everything. Thank you everyone for all your time and effort. And thanks especially to Steve, for finding the solution. azl
