Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 09 3:46 am)
Daz Studio has a price that recommends it, but if you have Poser 4 or higher I dont see any reason to use Daz Studio. For what it does, Daz Studio does it very well. It is a very good viewer for P5 models, and Daz has some very nice models in that format. I can open up a Poser file and take a look at what's inside -- its a viewer for Poser files. When Daz gets around to supporting a file format as elementary to the 3D industry as 3DS, it could be more than a viewer. Best regards, chikako Meshbox Design

"bthw, daz studio is as good as p 5 :)"
Right.
Oh, I forgot there is no ROFLMAO icon here.
D|S is good but it's nowhere near as good as P5.

I'm glad you like D|S, but to say it's as good as Poser 5 is ludicrous. When it has a setup room, and dynamic hair and cloth, it might be arguable, but now...forget it.
LonCray, runtime size might be the problem. I have never heard of Poser actually choking on large runtimes, but it sure does slow down. You might consider dividing up your runtime into several smaller ones. And keep them out of the Poser folder. I think you'll find that speeds Poser up a lot.
Interesting turn this thread has taken. By 'reloading my Runtime', I took the Runtime folder that I'd moved elsewhere when I deleted Poser and moved it back. I have not yet reloaded any updates to Poser - I didn't want to waste my time if something in my Runtime or just the size thereof was crashing it. Before I reloaded, I got a grey screen with the initial Curious Labs splashscreen - now I just get the grey screen with a taskbar on top - no splashscreen - and then it disappears. This happens whether I click Poser.exe OR a .pz3 file. BTW, I have DAZ Studio on my drive as well, but don't know enough about running it to make it work well for me - so it's not an option.
@LonCray: A suggestion... 1. Re-install Poser (again, completely, from scratch, delete existing Poser and runtime 1st). 2. DON'T copy your existing runtime. Instead, start up Poser, then try to create an alternative runtime pointing to the one you want to use. If it works, then ignore the problem and happily continue on your merry way.. If it doesn't work (Poser crashes or misbehaves in some way), then the problem is with your existing runtime.... (Oh, and if there ARE problems, DON'T save, and try to get back to the default Runtime before exiting). This will, at least, help narrow down the suspect area.. Also... There are some products/freebies available that install into folders with names that contain reserved ".xml" characters. Since Poser saves your library set-up in XML format, these characters can cause the xml parser to fail on startup. Which (depending on what the character is) can cause Poser to fail to load... I'm not an XML expert, so I cannot advise further there.. Cheers, Diolma
Um, why are you still using P5? Poser 6 corrects almost all of the glitches in Poser 5 (and adds new features)... and is available for a $99 upgrade. Rather than fight with an old version, you might as well upgrade. :) --John

Good afternoon all! So my Poser 5 stopped working a while ago - it would load a grey screen, then disappear. I asked about this and the solution seemed to be to reload it. Did that, still didn't work. Then I completely deleted it, reloaded it, and got it to work.... but only with the stock Runtime. When I reloaded my Runtime, it doesn't work anymore. Is there a Runtime size beyond which Poser 5 just doesn't work anymore? I've been blithely collecting stuff for Poser - free and not - and hadn't bothered to actually use the program for awhile - but didn't know it was possible to completely kill it. What do I do next?
