Subject: Creating characters and the such..

I would like to start creating my own (from complete scratch) complete models. I would like some guidance on which packages I would need to accomplish this, I own and pretty good variety of apps now. (Eovia Carrara Pro 5, Amapi 7.5 professional, Bryce 5.5, Poser 4,5,6 Painter 3D, Paintshop Pro 9, UV Mapper Pro. I am not sure if I should look into Z-Brush or something along that line to create my models or if I'm completely barking up the wrong tree.. I assume the following is done in this (basic) order to create my models.. Create model in app, convert to obj format, uv map, texture, create IK chains (bones), test, test, test... Anyways, any feedback would be great before I waste my money and time! Chuck

My characters will need more than basic bi-ped forms, creatures, animals, etc.. poser 4-6 cannot create the characters from scratch as the link included, right? The links are more showing box-like characters, I need to be able to create different appendages, etc.. Chuck

I use everything you mentioned, including z-brush (for morphs) + a custom made app that "auto-sets" the character's limbs, torso, and head for the parent/child relationship. I havent created any for a while, but the last one I set up was modeled by someone else (the latchworm-which was a freebee on the bryce forum when I got it set up. Several people created very cool textures for it. You can search in the Bryce forum for it if interested). anywho...you can see the models I made here from scratch with the apps you mention in my store here. I used to have a site "posertech" which showed how to set up a character from start to finish. This site is only available on my amapi training cd (I think it was the 2nd one..but its been so long that I forget) luck BT

Hey, I just purchased your Amapi Tut from 3D Commune yesterday.. thanks alot.. But I got the felling after seeing a good portion of the tutorials that Amapi was not going to be a good choice.. (and with Eovia changing it to Hexagon didn't help) I have definately put a good foot forward by looking at Moho 201.. worth it, but price is a touch steep.. Thanks for the good info, anyone using Moho out there for modeling?

nah amapi is the only app I use to set up the model (ie create it) but I'd still stand amapi pro next to ANY app out there for raw modeling power. and the z/amapi combo is hard to beat. sometime I need to do a tute to show how to use z to tweak a characters appearance. Its really easy, but it does require a little instruction at first. You create the model and then if you desire tweaks (after youve mapped it) you create a morph in zbrush and use poser to adjust it. If you havent mapped it, no harm/no foul. Anyhow, my complaint about amapi is that it lost the ability to not corrupt uv's somewhere between release and the second patch. It was never restored. So it forces you to use an intermediate app if youve already mapped it. but in A's defense, I think a modeller should take their model into Z and tweak it before they start setting up joints and the like anyhow. Z makes it easy to get those muscle details, wrinkles and adjustments. Especially if you are familiar with masks (and uv mapper pro). luck BT

I use Wings3d to create Poser Characters. You can have a look at the process at my web page, if you like. It discribes the steps nessesary to make a poser figure from a wings model. I suspect it is similar with other apps.
