Subject: Wish people a merry christmas

CrazyDawg ( ) posted Fri, 23 December 2005 at 10:52 PM · edited Thu, 23 January 2025 at 11:43 PM

I know there are a lot of people on R'sity that like to wish all their friends a merry christmas. I am going to say something here and many of you may gett ofended but before you do please think how you offend some by wishing them a merry christmas.

There are those of us that don't believe in God, Jesus or the Holey Ghost, there are others that also follow different religeons that visit this site and yet you all seem to take it for granted that we all believe in your god and his son or that we celebrate christmas..sorry to burst your bubble but think again.

I'm a none religious person, i don't celebrate the birth or anything to do with christ. How about if you wish everyone a merry christmas you place a note in it saying to those that celebrate christmas or believe in our god...just an idea because infact you are breaking a law and if you think i'm joking about that, go ask the teacher that just got 4 years for making a none religious child pray to god in his class..

In Part the law states "You are not to force any religeon or beliefs you may have upon another person"

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

I agree with you in most parts. Im not religious at all. But I must say that religious or not, as a human being you need ceremonies. Before christianity concured western "civilisation" you already celebrated most of the holidays and you had ceremonies for every part in life. It was a brilliant move for the marketing to incorporate it into christian tradition. Before we had christmas here in Sweden in northern Europe we celebrated midwinter and thats what I personally celebrate in this time of year and I have no problem calling it X-mas. If you think about it, x-mas is more of a celebrating of consumism than anything else. If you should celebrate all seasonal changes because it helps us get a grip of time and gives us new startingpoints in life.

CD: What law are you on about? It is a given that if we wish anyone Merry Christmas it does not mean that we wish to offend or insult people of other faiths. In my experiance those people will politely explain that they are not christians but accept the sentiment in the manner in which it was meant. In the UK such a person (as yourself) will reply 'Happy Holidays' or something of that nature. Personnaly, I won't knuckle under to this Politically Correct crap people like you are trying to foist on us well-meaning, god-fearing, honest, hard-working and peace-loving human beings! If you are an atheist, card-carrying member of the ACLU, then good luck to you, but don't tell me how I should or should-not wish another human being Merry Christmas.

Well, im not religious and christmas to me is nothing about religion but family. If i wish anyone a merry christmas, i think most people will take it as a greeting and wont mind at all. Religious or non-religious. :)

i consider myself staunchly anti-established-religion, but i still wish merry xmas to people because of a reflex i inherited. doesn't mean i wish everyone would praise the lord. just that it's an easy way out of wishing a majority of people to go on with their lives during this time and let me be :) drac (i.e. merry xmas, ya panks)

marcfx ( ) posted Sat, 24 December 2005 at 5:43 AM

Ditto Rochr. I have never associated Christmas with religion......just family and friends all giving and not wanting to receive. :)

Not sure about the rest of the world but here in Canada it's not against the law to wish anyone a Merry Christmas. Nor do I get upset when I see a "Happy Hanukkah" post. Or that Rhamadon has started. I accept the gesture in the spirit in which it is intended. I accept the right of others to worship or not as they see fit, and don't force my philosophies on others. But I do get tired of being expected to accept that I should embrace the concept of two men getting married yet be frowned upon for wishing others a Merry Christmas. The door of tolerance must swing both ways if it is going to allow the the passage of people from all directions. My advice, as insignificant as it is, would be to avoid reading any "Merry Christmas" posts if you are unable to accept the goodwill that in which the gesture is offered and allow those who wish to exchange well wishes to do so. Surely you're not endorsing censhorship are you? Despite an obvious difference of opinion, I wish you Happy Holidays and hope that the new year is good to you, and all others here.

Sorry guys. yes you are all correct in what you say. I had just dealt with a group of religious people at my front door going on about how christmas is all abou the birth of christ. I took out my frustration on you people instead of them, at least on here i have to keep my vulgarity off this forum which i would have used if i had not shut the door and walked away on these so called religious people. Bryster i'm not asking you to be politically correct in any way what so ever..i don't believe in any form of religeon and yet i will wish you all a happy x-mas, holiday, season. Look again i'm sorry, i'll just finishg with one little thing. Happy X-mas to all..

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

Well, I'm slective in my religion. I hold some of the same beliefs as some religions, and ask WTF bout the rules and expectations of them as well. Yes I celebrate Christmas more as a family thing as opposed to a birth of Christ thing. Moreover I will agree that the religous persons who tend to force their religion on you are quite annoying, I go to school with about 50 of them. So take your pick: Merry Christmas Happy Hanukkah Happy Mid-Winter Holiday S.Coleman (enjoying his hot chocolate iv)

OK,.........I guess I can see the point,.......but as an Irish Catholic(sorry), I should be able to wish someone a Merry Christmas without having to apologize for it. It's a Christian holiday for crying out loud. On the 26th of December(this year), I will wish my Jewish friends a Happy Chanukah, and whenever Ramadan comes around I will also greet my Moslem friends with the appropriate greeting. I have no friends who practice Paganism(but if I did, I'd would find the correct greeting and use it). I also agree that the current state of things as far as the holiday in question has very little to do with the actual birth of Christ(which was more than likely in the early spring anyway),........anyhow, as far as the law, I believe you mean this,.......... "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances". OK,.........so, as far as wishing someone a "Merry Christmas",......I am entitled to do so, without the interference of Congress, pursuiant to the rights afforded me by said law. As to someone taking offense at this greeting,.......well, that's what it means to live in a democracy or a constitutional republic,......compromise. So,...........Merry Christmas Everyone !

striving this was uncalled for "CD, you should apply for a job with the ACLA, I am sure you would fit right in" I have my beliefs you have yours, i don't hold it against you or make any deflamentary(sc) comments towards you because of that, why should you do it towards me.. Like i stated earliery i was sorry for what i stated and that i did take my frustration out on members of this forum. Again i am sorry for that and i will no longer post anything on this thread or this forum. I'm deleting my images from the gallery and moving on with my life. All i can say is i made a mistake in what i said..build a bridge and get over it.

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

:) If I was practicing my religion right now, I'd be considered such a sinner. I'm divorced, I swear, I believe in premarital sex, I don't have a problem with what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes (just don't expect me to do it LOL) etc etc the list goes on and on. But to me the holidays are about celebrating family and friendships. An excuse to get together and enjoy one anothers company.
and yeah, I don't like anyone telling me how I should or shouldn't celebrate anything.

Hey Dawg, I'm sorry you've gone to this extreme measure!
I think you may have a bit of remorse when you have a chance to really think this over. It's kind of like suicide; "a permanent solution to a short-term problem".
It is common for a lot of folks to feel a bit of depression around this time of year. I have a tendency towards that myself. I also have been depressed and angry (more than once)to the point of really considering quitting Renderosity and deleting my gallery, but I didn't, and I am glad because I enjoy the forum and the community here more than ever!

Sure, we have arguments and disagreements over many topics, but we usually can come to an amicable resolution if we respect each other as friends and even family(a dysfunctional family perhaps, but still family). You struck a nerve with the topic you posted, but so what? You stated your point of view(which is your right) and other people disagreed. That's life. Nobody hates you, and you have friends here. When you are ready, come back, 'cause I think you would miss us and Brycing too much. There are some folks who have quit and deleted their galleries and they came back eventually, even if under a different name. I can think of at least two, but I'll not name names. I hope you will sometime find your way back to us. Good luck, Dan

Dude! Don't go! Thanks to you my little cat can walk pain-free! :D You suggested some meds for her. I tried it and it works like a charm! You went to quite some length to gather the information and you took the time to IM me with it. You've got a heart of gold in my book...and a friend for life. Persevere...
