Subject: Joint Editor freezes Poser 4

Marvel1 ( ) posted Fri, 30 December 2005 at 5:04 AM ยท edited Sun, 05 January 2025 at 3:50 PM

I've been having a problem with the joint editor in Poser 4 for the longest time. I modeled a figure from scratch and I am at the stage where I am doing the joint editing, the problem is that I can only work for about 5 to 10 minutes before Poser 4 freezes up during this process. I have Poser 4 unpdated to 4.03 and have even tried doing the joints in ProPack with the same problem. Consequentially I have been reduced to working on the joints for a few minutes, making a save, working a few more minutes, making another save, Poser freezes, restart the machine....and I end up starting the whole process over again and again.

I have updated ALL the hardware in my machine and still have the same problem with the joint editor freezing Poser. I have 256mb of RAM, a 1.8 GHZ processor, 64mb graphic card and am running Windows 98 SE (i know, I know... :P). I have tried it on Windows 2000 even and well...same old story.

Does anyone have any ideas what is possibly causing this. Much thanks for any help.

Make sure you are not running anything else, also, you may not be able to get really close to the object in viewing. Can you move the camera back up a bit? How big is this model? Sharen

How are you making the figure? If it's by importing a hierarchy (PHI) file, open the resulting character and immediately save it back into the library. Then work on the saved character. There seems to be some bug in the PHI import which messes up the joint editor.

I didn't make using a PHI file but by using the hierarchy editor in Poser. And now that I think of it, it does freeze up when I am working close such as on the fingers and hands. Is there an advantage to create it by using the PHI builder and is their other alternatives to joint editing using other software besides Poser or 3D Studio Max?

It's possible the same problem could occur with the hierarchy editor, I haven't really used it. It would be worth trying the same approach - once the hierarchy is sorted, save the figure, delete it from the scene and reload.

Yeah, it does that, the Joint Editor especially crashes when you try and move the green and red rotation lines. I don't know what the answer is, other than save often, but it isn't anything your doing wrong, or your computer.

Thanks for the replies all. I contacted BLRender that did the figure creation book for Poser and he pretty much told me the same. Guess I'm going to have to baby-step it. If anything else at least I now know it isn't the computer or me being a complete moron. Thanks again for everyone's input.
