Just screwing around with B5.5 terrains/lattices. Perhaps a type of castle structure. Not sure yet. AgentSmith

Wow! those latice are really "clean" can you show the map?

I make'em in Photoshop CS, 16-bit. That's why they appear more 'clean' than normal terrains. This is, of course just an 8-bit jpg of the original map. AS

And, the "crown", which is just the original map with a few spaces removed a zoom blur applied. AS

Not hard Marc! if you can draw squares and circle with photoshop using only shade of grey, then you know how to paint some elevation map!

Sans2012 ( ) posted Thu, 19 January 2006 at 6:40 AM

Could make a nice Sci-Fi sky scraper too:)

I never intended to make art.

marcfx ( ) posted Thu, 19 January 2006 at 6:44 AM

Well, I'm learning. Must be a black background! Trying it out now :)

You open bryce, select a terrain, go into the terrain editor, set the resolution to 512 or 1024 go into the picture menu ( at the right of the editing tool window ) import your picture, Blend the picture, apply the picture... and click on OK!

Could definitely make a cool exhaust valve in a futuristic set. Great stuff! :)

Well, after playing with my knobs!!! I came up with this little thing. What i have forgotten is how (In terrain editor) to get that red layer to rise or lower (dont think i'm explaining this right)......so it deletes the edges......with me?? Marc (Searching the red colour mats in editor!!) ;(

To get Terrain clipping (red layer) click the the odd Open icon and drag the bracket ends. So to clip the lowest areas click and drag the bottom bracket up (image) HTH; Dan

@Dan Thanks Dan, I found it after looking through an old tut i had laying around but, I found the problem i had. I've been trying to rid the base (round base) of my greyscale image and forgot to remove it first in Photoshop. Starting to look better now. Thanks :)

If you're stuck on a desert island with just Bryce and no image editor, you can still make heightscale maps by doing a render from top view and assigning greyscale materials to primitives, imported objects, or 2d objects. Just go to top view, make your ground plane black, turn off sun and moon shadows in the skylab, and move the sun to the bottom of the sun position dial so you wont get any unintended shadows in your render. I like to make my document the same size as terrain/lattice resolution. Then when you're done export the render from topview and import it as a picture in the terrain editor. After you generate the terrain it helps to smooth a few times, or if you do have an image editor just apply a slight amount of gaussian blur. This bridge was made using several 1024x1024 lattices using heightfields designed in this manner. The advantage of using this method over an altitude render is that it doesn't matter how thick an object is, just what tone of grayscale it is. You could have a white cylinder and subtract from it by overlapping it with a black or gray 2d square. it's kind of like working with layers.

A cool discovery I made recently while messing around with KnotPlot is that you can make cool terrains from altitude renders of the 3D models you can import from the program. The new Celtic knot designer is awesome! You can make ornate grills, stone and wood carvings etc. Feel free to try this one that I made recently.

Thank you AS! That is very cool! I love what you're doing with the 16-bit heightmaps from CS too. That feature alone makes me want to upgrade from PS7. I'm glad you liked my idea. It's always fun to bounce one your way and watch you make it even better!

No problem, anytime. ;o) I had tweaked your terrain/lattice a little by raising some areas and lowering others, nice shape/pattern you made there. AS
