Subject: Apophysis stereo?

Is it possible to make stereoscopic flames in Apophysis, i.e. render-rotate the flame-then render again? If not, is it something they might have in a future version? I'm new to Apo, so thanks for any help.

I don't think so, at least not yet. They're coming up with new capabilities all the time, though, and I haven't tried the latest version yet.

You can do this is you have Paintshop Pro or Photoshop. Just mirror or "flip horizontal" the flame and put them both onto a new image window. Gimp might do it, too, but I've never used it so I don't know first-hand.

Another neat trick with flames and fractals is to crop out parts of a fractal - either a "quarter section" or a half section and then copy that, mirror it and stick the 2 together in an enlarged "canvas" or image window side by side for horizontal symmetry. Or then take that group and flip it, copy again and stick it under the horizontally symmetrical image to make a 4x kaleido type symmetry. I used to do that a long time ago in the Fractint days - I'm sure I would have been shot on sight by some of the "purists" of those days had they known who I was - lol. I reckon since those mappings (dmj.uxf - Symmetry and Standard.uxf - Kaleidoscope) are available now in UF that I'm safe from being dragged off to the "Halls of Purity" now. :-?) There's a couple in my "DrahcirXips" gallery of oldies where I did that if you want to look called something like "fnzzcxx3" and "Entanglement" - http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Yes&Artist=DrahcirXips

Rick Edited to add punctuation - I think I'm getting a little anal in my older age - lol

I would be surprised if Apophysis implements 3D transforms any time soon, so you won't be able to make stereo images with depth. You need to use one of the programs that does 3D IFS fractals, such as XenoDream or Chaoscope. Regards, Garth

Downloaded Chaoscope. Able to makes stereos quite easily. Would be nice if Apo had the same rotational feature. Thanks.

What is a stereoscopic flame? I've never heard of them before. Thanks!! Lisa

It's viewing with actual 3D depth. A flame is first rendered and saved to be, say, your left eye view, then rotated horizontally clockwise and then rendered and saved again for the right eye view. They can then be made a stereo pair or red/cyan anaglyph using a freeware stereo program like Stereo PhotoMaker.

On this board I found Shood has many examples in his gallery.

Fractals can be made stereo with any program that allows rotation where you can see the z-depth. Chaoscope does the job, I haven't yet tried XenoDream. Quat has a stereo option in the program. The best way to get a stereo pair is by making a lateral shift, but these fractal programs only seem to allow rotation which seems to work fairly well. The lateral shift method can be used to make stereos in any 3D computer graphics program or with your digital camera for that matter. Hope this helps.

Thank you. Those are really interesting.I'd never heard of it before. Lisa

Hi Gannon Like you i also make stereo images and have been for some years with different programs and photography. In fact some of the examples on the site you mentioned (http://stereo.jpn.org/eng/) in the pop up anaglyphs section where done by me. I found Chaoscope is great for stereo but not as good as Apophysis would be if you could rotate the flames. I have looked at the script side to see if its possible to lock all the triangles and rotate but it does not seem so. Does anyone know how to get a list of all the possible expressions that can be used in the making of scripts as there does not seem to be that much info about them. Thanks Steve B
