You are not the only one. Even when shooting something inanimate, something can cross the field of view right when you press the shutter release.

Yeah something can cross the pov at anytime - usually my thumb :D

How come we say 'It's colder than hell outside' when isn't it realistically always colder than hell since hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone?

Andreas: thats the nature of DSLRS...at close range can only focus on one plane.

Methinks Andreas was making a joke, ...or perhaps it is the morphine.... (wink) ;^]

I kinda like the DSLR, because I can hear the shutter click, and it is fast to turn on.I like planes too. They're just kinda boring to take pictures of, unless you can get to an airshow. Then like mayday142 you can get some really nice aerial shots. Those smoke colours were awesome. We may be having some nice weather now, so might go out to the bird sanctuary and see if there is some owls there too. Hear they have snow owls. Where is that Jim.? You sure get an assortment there flying around. Here at lakes and in the mountains if you see them flying and are lucky enought to grab a few shots, that is a bonus.Because once they fly away, thats pretty much it for the day. Unless you can find thier nesting areas. Right now there is a ove abundance of eagles that have stuck around nearer to the city, because of all the rain, it has washed thier food down rivers. Plus they are having areial battles with owls for some of that food. Once they grab a fish and are in air, the fight begins. I need to get out there.

You have a lot more at hand than I do,Doug. We have Canadian geese,(LOL who doesn't?!),ducks, sea gulls, and pigeons. That's it. Nothing exotic is wild here!

Thats pretty much what we have here as well Marlene. You hardle see any falcons or eagles. Although we have crows and ravens too....and further up the road from where i live they are breeding ostriches. Poor things really seem mislocated in this artic climate. Although their loooong legs make them run pretty darn fast in the snow, lol. The only time ive seen an owl, zoos included, was on our drive to the polar circle a few months ago. And this big fella was sooooo not afraid of me. I reckon this is the only owl-shot ill ever take...and its not even a good one...siiiiigh.

I know I'd be happy with it.I took shots of falcons that were tethered and I was still unhappy with them.I mean, how hard could that be?Anybody should be able to do that!

Yes, but it is HOW you take the picture that matters, even if they are teathered. You can take advantage and get an extreme close up, shoot from a dramatic angle, or make some sort of animal rights statement. The possibilities are limitless. I do have to tip my hat though to those that capture them in the wild and in flight. Not an easy task. I do really like your shot though Andreas, blown highlights and all! ;^P

He he cracker Jim, one small consolation is the it is still well focused and exposed, I have had a couple where the servo has grabbed a branch/post or something in the foreground and even sometimes background and the subject is a lovely blur, oh well thats the perils of moving subjects.

Nameless_Wildness ( ) posted Thu, 26 January 2006 at 3:40 AM

Simon, not sure if you knew this but on the 1D Mkii, there is a custom function (20) where you can set the servo tracking speed from being thrown off by objects between the camera and the subject. Clever huh.

Zachary_Hunt ( ) posted Thu, 26 January 2006 at 5:37 AM

Jim I think you have approached this the wrong way, if I may say. This capture is of the very rare and aggressive flat nosed owl. Found only in pine forests in central England. There you go Jim I saved your reputation. Blessed Be.LOL

LostPatrol ( ) posted Thu, 26 January 2006 at 9:51 AM ยท edited Thu, 26 January 2006 at 9:51 AM

lol never seen the aggressive flat nosed owl before!

Didnt know about the custom function (20) thing, neat function no doubt, I have only have a couple of short opportunities to use the 1D II before handing it back to its owner (nice while it lasted) it is a tough choice between the 1D II and 5D, although the 5D will probably win out for its FF sensor (unless Camelot come through with the goods lol) and I will have both! One can dream.
