Has any one used RDNA ART MATERIALS Vol.1 : Cartoon Shaders? Are they easy to use? Could you post what you have created with them?

ynsaen ( ) posted Sat, 04 February 2006 at 9:39 PM

I have. Yes. No. (sorry, lol) If you know how to apply materials in P5/6 (6 by default, since there are some functions that simply work better there) you can use them with no prob. THe package comes with a really great set of good instructions, as well. They are, quite simply, some of the best shaders ever created for 3D work -- and not jsut for poser. Getting some of these effects into higher end applications would really up the ability of artists to create some incredible effects. And the future packs he's still got to come are promising to be evenmore versatile.

thou and I, my friend, can, in the most flunkey world, make, each of us, one non-flunkey, one hero, if we like: that will be two heroes to begin with. (Carlyle)

I thought they were very easy to use, plus they come with a pdf that shows you how to work with them. Ive posted 1 image here at rendo its in my gallery. Well worth the money to me.

RandC How long did it take to apply the shaders? Cool image.

Sure, check out the link - it's my latest gallery image, done with Cartoon Shaders.

Cartoon Shaders is the beez neez. I know that $45 is expensive, but you won't regret it. Plus, the author's a nice guy who'll help you out if you need some tips with the material room. Message edited on: 02/04/2006 21:54

Easy to use? Definitely. How long did it take to apply the shaders? It depends. LOL Applying one is done in a double-click. So, you get an idea of the ime and effort involved for the user! :D More seriously, if your scene has a lot of material groups, it will take you more time, obviously. :)

It's very easy to use. But it can take some time to apply the cartoon shader for each material when you have a big scene.

I'm adding a feature to my little application (still in Beta) that would apply the cartoon shader depending on various parameters (diffuse color, ambiant color, alternate diffuse or even an average color from the texture map). It will apply a cartoon shader to all materials automatically.

Before adding this feature, i must look with you, Olivier, if i can make it available or not. Once it works for me, i will discrib how it works, so you can tell me if i can or cannot add this feature. Edited to add the link.

Just a quick test... Loaded the core by Stonemason, changed the camera position and lights and saved the scene. Loaded in my application, selected "use textures for the colors" and apply... Wait, and save the modification. Load again in Poser and render... The "TOONing" part took less than one minutes.

And another test... Using the same technique as above: create the scene as usual. Load the scene in my app and do a batch tooning. After some times (about two minutes), it has tooned every material (in that scene, more than 80 !) Notice the seam between the head and neck of the girl. This is caused by the difference of the average color of the head and body texture.

Yes, very easy to use, very easy to modify. B&W, gray, colored, shaded, you name it and it's there. The product is absolutely briliant. I wish it would have been released a year earlier, would have saved me lot's of time and effort. I'm redoing my comics at the moment with ART MATERIALS Vol.1 : Cartoon Shaders. I'm converting lot's of scenes (100's of them) and because it's so easy to use it is actually fun to do. Once you've set up the shaders the way you like them, you can add them to the materials library and re-use them over and over again. The pic shown is a combination of P6 with ART MATERIALS Vol.1 : Cartoon Shaders and Manga Studio EX.... they're a perfect pair!

5 minutes in P6, no textures except for the transmaps on the eyelash/eyebrows. Need to work on the eyes (sigh)

Miss Nancy ( ) posted Sun, 05 February 2006 at 2:19 PM

image in post 12 is impressive IMVHO, but one should try to match neck and head tex, increase the smoothing node/parameter and increase the line width node/parameter. In addition, I'm guessing the eyes are trouble spots (transparency fx for lashes, brows, cornea et al.) I realise y'all can't post screen shots of Olivier's materials set-up, but it's imperative that you have control over variables like that.

semidieu ( ) posted Sun, 05 February 2006 at 2:50 PM

The Toon shaders have options for transparencies... but i'm right now working to add those material to my app. The picture is only using the "single colors" shader. I didn't use the "Highlight", the "reflective", the "raytrace", the "FX" and the "Texture" shaders. For now, everything is implemented, except the FX and textures shaders. I'm working to add the textures shaders, because the transparency toon shader are essential. Once i have done this, i'll post a screenshot of the same picture (post 12) with the transparency shaders.

aeilkema ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 2:13 PM

I find it hard to believe you did set up all of toon materials in less then a minute. I've been doing a lot of scenes already, but I can't do it so fast.... Am I doing something wrong, is there a secret I don't know of? How can you apply 135 materials in less then a minute or even apply one tone shader to so a number of figures and clothes? I'd love to know how you go about doing this....

Olivier ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 2:23 PM

This is his software that does the job for him. :) Pretty cool, eh? Semidieu, you need to add some features: Outline width AO response, and AO on or off Backlight FX width Anti-Light FX width Type of shader Texture Trans Bump It should be editable for each figure or prop: one setting for each with an option to have the same play of parameters to be applied on the whole scene. If you can all of this, you have some gold in your hands! :D

nruddock ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 2:23 PM

See post #9. There is an application / script involved.

semidieu ( ) posted Mon, 06 February 2006 at 3:57 PM

I was already thinking to add these features... For instance, you can: - Select the material or actor where you want your toon shader. This mean you can apply different shader to different part. I will do some pictures tomorrow to show this... - All shader from the package are now useable; - It add the transparency when necessary; - it add the bump if available (and if you want). Now, i must make it more user friendly and add those little options Olivier said above. I will try to do this as fast as possible, but i broke my arm last thursday... so i'm writing/coding with one hand... But that mean also i can't go to work ;-)

Just to add this about the application: It's for Windows XP... and you must have the Framework 1.1 installed for it to work. It's actually in Beta and the version available DO NOT contain the "module" to automate the toon shaders... I hope to make it available very soon (perhaps until the end of this week...)

aeilkema ( ) posted Tue, 07 February 2006 at 2:12 AM

"Will this set work with Daz Studio?? If not is one for D/S a possibility in the future?? Thanks. :D " No it doesn't, since it is based completely on the P6 material engine and takes advantage of it's advanced features. D/S works complete differently with materials and misses these advanced features, but what else do you expect from a free application? Olivier would have to completely re-write all of the materials and that takes another year :-) You really need to upgrade to Poser 6 and get rid of the toy, if you want to play with the big boys ;-) @semidieu, sounds like a cool application. I didn't see that you created an application to apply the shaders this quickly. Unfortunally Framework 1.1 is involved, so I'll pass. I really dislike Framework 1.1 a lot, it always messes up my system, just like MS dot net. I could really use the application once you get permission to let it works with the shaders, but I'm not willing to install Framework 1.1 for it.

Here's another one, using the texture toon shader. I onlx had to edit 4 materials (eyebrows and eyelashes, the sword ring to gold and the gryphon eye), due to an "issue" of the application. When there is no texture map, it does has it where one. The default color is then white... I don't have any problem with the framework 1.1... Did you install all the updates ? This could be an issue. I didn't thought it could be an issue, because i always had this installed on my machine without problems...

Olivier ( ) posted Tue, 07 February 2006 at 6:46 AM

I have it too and have no problem.

" don't have any problem with the framework 1.1... Did you install all the updates ? This could be an issue. I didn't thought it could be an issue, because i always had this installed on my machine without problems..." Most likely it doesn't cause any problems on your machine at all. I'm working with an application that allows me to create and code 3D interactive worlds and a few apps related to it. When using Framwork and a number of them at the same machine, I'm getting errors. I'm not dependant on Framework at all, but do need the others, so that's why framework is no go at my pc.

I installed Frameworks 1.1 and updated as much as I could find, but I can't get the ShaderWorks to work - I can't get the file unzipped and it says that the file may be corrupted etc. My partner suggested it might be because I'm using Windows XP Home - she has to use XP Pro for various aspects of her Web design. Any suggestions?

I finally updated my website with the ShaderWorks ART MATERIAL module. And yes, it's FREE ! You still need the ART MATERIAL by Olivier ;-) Please, read the instruction before running the application (you can download the instruction in the download page or simply download the "full" package). ShaderWorks will run on a computer with the Framework 1.1 installed. There is, currently, an issue with 64-bit machine. I hope it will solved very soon. Also, take a look at the download page and the status of the module. Every modules are working, but some of them aren't yet completed. If you're interested in testing these modules or have new/better idea, you can send me an email (look at my website). Finally, always do a backup before deleting/overwriting any files...
