Subject: Poser 6: Do you need really OpenGL?

x2000 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:13 PM · edited Mon, 23 December 2024 at 12:16 PM

My computer has a total crap integrated graphics chip which has almost no OpenGL support. I tried putting in an actual video card, but I couldn't get the damned thing to work no way, no how (bad slot, possibly), so I guess I'm stuck with what I have. DAZ Studio won't even load, Mojoworld 2 SE neither, nor World Builder 3.6. So... My question is, will P6 work fine without OpenGL support, or am I screwed until I can get a better computer? Is any one else running it under similar conditions? Is OpenGL a tacked on extra option in P6, or is it an integrated part of the whole?

modus0 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:22 PM

I'm pretty sure P6 will work without it. I usually use the SREED display instead of OpenGL, and IIRC, SREED is about the same as the preview mode in previous versions of Poser.

it will work without OpenGL, but looking at your post, you need a new GFX anyway. your're looking at $70-120 for a low end / midrange Geforce which will solve a lot of the problems you've reported.. and the added benefit that Poser, DS etc will love it. hope I've helped in anyway at all..

SWAMP ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:31 PM

Just a thought Since your motherboard uses onboard graphics, there is a setting in your BIOS to switch that off and use a card. You changed that.right?

x2000 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:34 PM

Well like I said, Khai, I did buy a nice card once, but I couldn't get it to work. I tried every which way, but the damn computer wouldn't even detect its presence. I tried it in a friend's computer and it worked, so it wasn't the card at fault. Possibly my AGP slot is just screwed up, I don't know. But I seem to be stuck with what I have, anyway. I don't have the knowledge or the money to do anything more extensive to my computer, so I'll have to make do. I just need to know if it's siufficient to run P6. I'm not interested in fancy previews anyway, I just want the added lighting and material capabilities.

x2000 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:35 PM

SWAMP: Yep. Again, I think my slot is just hosed.

SWAMP ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 2:39 PM

Oh sorry...that sounds painful:-p

Acadia ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 3:07 PM

My computer can't do Open GL and Poser works ok for me.

Thanks Acadia, that's exactly the answer I was hoping for:)

PJF ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 4:06 PM

I just reinstalled Poser6 after many months of a previous setup, and only just realised there was an OpenGL feature. :-D

Maybe I saw it on the last install and have since forgotten, but this time a dialog came up offering the option. Perhaps the difference is that between then and now I have installed a GeForce* in my PC that can actually do OpenGL.

(* a cheapie off ebay that matches the age of my old box)

The preview window definitely responds faster using OpenGL over Sree3D in Poser6 (even faster in Bryce5.1), but the old Sree still isn't too bad.

"...I think my slot is just hosed."

Remnants of that old ants' nest that was in there a while back? In which case maybe "hosed out" is the answer. ;-)

x2000 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 4:19 PM

No, the ants are gone, PJ, but now I have bees. I'd get rid of them, too, but I really need the honey. Ah, maybe I need to just give in and start creating lingerie for Vicki so that I can make a fortune in the Marketplace and buy a cutting edge computer;)

Casette ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 4:29 PM

I work without OpenGL and fine

x2000, Wait for Victoria 4 to come out and make lingerie for her. I think you'd have a better shot in a less saturated market. Aiko 2 is currently, IMHO, a better market for add-ons as V3 pretty much has everything plus everything.

x2000 ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 6:14 PM

Or maybe I should make lingerie for my Darcassian female. I'm not the only guy who likes exotic chicks, am I? Acadia, Casette, it's good to know I'm not alone in this. Maybe we should organize a support group for the OpenGL-impaired;)

jartz ( ) posted Mon, 27 March 2006 at 9:09 PM

I use Sree3d mode and works fine for me. The only thing that I'm working on is getting a faster memory for now - say 512 MB. I agree with you x2000 on the support thing. I rarely use anything OpenGL, plus when I use P6 with that mode, it reads so funny while working on Perspective [the criss-cross tear in clothes and the eyes popping out of the characters - yikes!!] I use Rage Ultra 128 as a graphics card {I think} I hope that helps ;-) jlovesart2

I think the worst thing about D/S is the impossibility of disabling the OpenGL preview mode. However I've tried the program, but these little black squares bother me too much. And in difference with Poser, you can disable it only for render but not for preview, so you can't work properly if your vcard isn't an OpenGL one :( Okay. I know it. I must upgrade my vcard. I need a upper card if I work with 3D. It's in my wishlist. But not today

I don`t have openGl on my computer and daz studio works fine.

x2000 ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 7:33 AM · edited Tue, 28 March 2006 at 7:34 AM

xantor: REALLY? You're not kidding me, right? Because that's weird! I don't know, I can't imagine what else the problem would be, but I can't even get D|S to open! I've never even seen the interface except in other people's screenshots. Same with the other two programs (3D World coverdisc freebies).

My last computer had poor OGL support, but this one is actually even worse. I used to be able to use the OGL view in Bryce 5, even if it was slow. But now it just crashes the program (runs fine otherwise). I haven't even bothered considering B5.5, I know DAZ has added more OGL junk (and not much else that I'm aware of...) that I can't use anyway:/

Daz studio works fine but the free version of mojoworld from a magazine wont load. :(

Casette ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 10:24 AM

Strange. I've readed in D/S forums and asked at DAZ. All the same answer: if my card haven't OpenGL support, my previews will be full of black squares, jumps, artifacts and more. And I need to see what I'm drawing

" I don`t have openGl on my computer and daz studio works fine." erm.. you DO have openGL or DS would'nt work at all.. DS's system requirements : # OpenGL compatible graphics card with at least 128 MB of onboard # Drivers supporting OpenGL 1.1 recommended

x2000 ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 11:35 AM

Just for the record, how the hell do you find out what version, if any, of OpenGL you have, anyway? The only way I found out was from the UV Mapper log file.

** -- OpenGL -------------------------------------------------

Installable client - fully in hardware

Vendor - S3 Graphics
Renderer - VIA/S3G UniChrome IGP/MMX/SSE
Version - 1.2
**

x2000 ( ) posted Tue, 28 March 2006 at 11:41 AM

And btw, UV Mapper Pro 2 works pretty good for me, though it slows right down when I try to display the actual model, obviously. UVMP3, however, is much more OGL-dependent and while I can use it, it moves like a snail in a puddle of molasses, so OGL-impaired folks might want to steer clear of it:( Other than that, the only problems I've encountered have been with the apps I've mentioned above.

Unless you have a brand computer, you could replace your mainboard by a decent MSI, Abit, Asus or Gigabyte. Will set you back for about $70-$110.
