Subject: PS7 and XP 64

Has anyone successfully installed PS7 on a system running XP64pro and if so how'd you do it?  Everytime I try it just stops after I click the install Photoshop 7 button.  The adobe website and tech support had nothing that I could find.  Thanks in advance.

I am not running XP 64, but I DO have a couple of questions for you.... does it specifically say that it'll run on the 64bit version?... Also... in compatibility mode, do you have the option to run programs in XP 32 bit mode?.....  Lou.

It doesn't say it will run on XP 64.  I have tried running it in compatibility mode to no evail.  If it doesn't run it'll be O.K. I was just hoping to be able to use it on my new pute.  Looks like I'll have to build another and install XP pro on that one.

Sorry to hear that.... I have heard that Adobe is/has released a 64 bit version... you might want to look into it... from what little I do know of the 64 bit 'ware, it's supposed to be really good... trouble is, you can't, very often, run the regular stuff on it. like trying to run a Win 3.1 on XP. Hello stew451...

Hi there.. My name is Joe.. And i am a MicroSoft/Adobe Certified Beta Tester and Partner..

Answering your question..

Adobe Photoshop v.7.xx will never work under Windows XP 64Bit.. and it is 100% un-compatible.

The Adobe Photoshop CS is not stable under Windows XP 64Bit either.. And that is why they released the CS2 after a very short time from releasing the first CS version.. did you notice that!

Now here are some questions..

1- Where did you get your windows 64Bit Windows XP! means: Was it bundled with a pc you bought? or you Bought it online or from a store!

2- Either way bought it bundled or from a store or online.. Was it long time ago! or recently? The reason i asked.. So if you have chance to return it and get your self a regular XP either Home Edition or Pro.. The only difference between them is the (REGISTRY REMOTE & SOME NETWORK PROTOCOLS) other then that! They are exactly the same.!!

P.S. The reason i am telling you all this..

1- MicroSoft Know that their OS WIN-XP 64Bit has a lot of issues with the in-compatibility with 89% of the softwares. and that is why you cannot even find it in stores!! All the stores stopped selling them by the order of MicroSoft!!

2- Only AlienWare/Dell/HP/IBM brands are the only vertified & certified to sell and work with WIN_XP_64Bit

3- The Compatibility modes: 95/98/ME/WIN2K/32Bit is not stable in the WIN_XP_64Bit for now and that issue will be fixed with the new 64Bit release which was suppose to be this comming aug. but they delayed it for next year (WINDOWS VISTA)

4- This link: http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxpprox64 might help you to read more and solve some problems with your operating system.. and if you really want to keep it.. Then go for Adobe Photoshop CS2 it will work fine and faster then a regular 32Bit OS..

Am using MicroSoft Enterprise Server Edition 64Bit and it is fine with most of my applications.. Casue they are almost all new and supports the 64Bit OSs..

Wish you luch and have a wonderful week end

JOE

Thanks everyone for the info, but I finally got it installed and it seems to be running fine.  I will have to do more tests in tomorrow.  Install third party plugins and open large file and run through all the filters. It's gonna be a long day.

Nattarious, I bought the OS separately from Newegg.com.  I'm going to purchase CS2 in a few months, but didn't want to give up 7 because I've heard people not being able to run all the third party plugins they had for 7 in CS2.  Hopefully I won't have all these problems with CS2.

I got it to install by booting up in safe mode and installing from there, the load sequence didn't stop or lock up at all.  After that I just restarted as normal.  One thing to add is that one of my techie guys at work had advised me to buy AMD over Intel because AMD could run 32-bit apps natively as they didn't rmove the coding from their 64bit chips like Intel did.  Whether this is true or not I have no idea.  My gig now is:

AMD 64FX55
ASUS A8n-SLI
EVGA 7800 gt 256MB
4GB PC3200 RAM
2 WD120GB HD
2 WD320GB HD
Pioneer DVD Burner

If I run into any problems I'll post it back here.  Good night:)

Oh well my friend.. made it work! that sounds interesting.. but i am really glad at least you made it up!

And the advice of your friend or your techi guy is totally right about the AMD.. and i agree with him about that matter over the Intel tho.. And that is why i am using AMD my slef on my personal PC:

DualCore X2 4800+

4GB PC-3200

Asus A8R32-MVP Deluxe (ATI 3200 Chipset)

2x512Mbs (CrossFire ATI X1900XLX)

And regarding the CS2 and third party plugins.. about 90% of the third party plugins/filters/action packs/filters/shapes are backward compatible! and i run TONS of many different third party plugins were specially made for Photoshop 6 & 7 with no problems on my CS2 tho.. And to be honest.. I didn't meet or face the other 10% since i got the CS2.. So which plugins are you talking about? I mean mention one of them and let me see i have it installed or no..

Thanks and best regards and wish you a happy weekend my friend

JOE

NOTE:: If you will compare the Intel Extreme Edition 955x and the AMD FX-60 they are almost the same but Intel Wins! Specially in the CAD and similar 3D Progz. The AMD mainly made for more MultiMedia and Gammers.. And that is also another reason to me to use the 955x

I don't have a specific list, just read in various forums people couldn't get their plugins to work in CS2.  I've finished loading all my plugins and ran PS7 through some tests and everything is working fine, except that it only regonizes just under two Gigs of the four Gigs of memory I have installed, but that's fine.  Thanks for all the info and enjoy the rest of the weekend:

Ok then.. hehe.. If it works fine..then it is ok hehe...

And about the windows seeing 2GB (In fact you mentioned the ASUS motherboard with eNVIDIA chipset) right!

You can can Asus and they will tell you this excatly!

The Asus motherboards or any others which uses SLI (OR EVEN A SINGLE PCIe 16x Slot) will reserve memory for its own chipset!!! and i've been into this problem bor the past 2 months with my latest upgrades on one of my workstations. And that is why i went with the latest ATI chipset PCIE 3200.

instead of 4GB..  all the asus showed me 2.48GB exactly some of them showed 2.4GB..

And now here is trick.. You said you are using the FX-55 right!

Before calling asus.. Please reboot your computer and goto into yout  BIOS..

There should be under your ram configurations menu an option should be called (REMMAPPING) the funny thing is. See first what is it setup to.. If it is enabled turn it OFF and if it OFF turn it on.. and check your memory under windows.. Trsut me!! I've through all this as i said for the past 1 1/2 months almost 2 tho..

And here is another trick...

You know that AMD till now they only supports DDR and not DDR2 like INTEL!! Make sure that your motherboard supports the whole 4GB in PC-3200 mode.. Becasue what i know is also for sure..

If you use three (3GB) of memory! they should run only at 333Mhz and if you want to use over 3GB they have to run on 266Mhz.. sounds crazy eh! oh well it is a fact in many motherboards specially the Asus..

*Check your Manual and see the memory configuration table and the max you can use with the right settings..

*Make sure to get your latest bios update casue sometimes it helps.. All the new SLI/CROSSFIRE/PCIe are totally new generation of technology and you know it.. so there will be always some issues...

*I don't know how you made that work as you mentioned that you installed in or under the safe mode.. I beleive you tho.. But it wasn't suppose to work..

But all i can tell you is.. that WINDOWS 32BIT XP PRO/HOME or WIN2K 2000 only sees 3GB of memory..

And the new 64BIT MS-OSs sees upto 16GB of memory and up! and that is what i use on all of workstations.

Here is a link to prove what i just mentioned: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/system/platform/server/PAE/PAEmem.mspx

Here is another trick... You said 4GB! means you are using 4 modules each by 1gb! try to take 1GB out and boot before you start the Memory REMAPPING! and see what it will see...

The reason i am asking tho.. I told you i am both adobe/micorsoft beta tester and MSDN partner.. and i really wanna know if that will help or no..

Thanks and much respect and again best regards.. and wonderful weekend to you too my friend.

Windows sees my 4GB of mem, but PS7 only sees just under 2GB.  I have all the latest drivers and BIOS.  But as long as PS7 is working I'm not really worried about it, because on my old system it saw the same amount of RAM too and I didn't have any problems with it then.  When I get CS2 maybe it won't have this same restriction.  Maybe.

In Edit > Preferences > Memory & Image Cache

Is PS7 showing 2GB of  "Available Memory" or do you have the "Maximum Used by Photoshop" at 50% equaling 2GB? Also, "Available Memory" is not Total Memory. Photoshop should be the last program open for the Memory Usage to show properly.

Hello once again stew451!!

Where did you see that windows sees your 4GB of memory! you mean in the system information tool!

I want you please to right click on your my computer icon on the desktop > propereties and when that window popsup.. Read the last part under your processor information please.. What is the actual memory in use out of 4GB.. System Info will show what your Bios and your motherboard see. But they are not in use...

Unless you will tell me that after right clicking on my computer then properties it will show you 4.0GB of ram! Please provide me with more info.. thank you again..

Dreamer, the available memory is showing 1769MB and with the max used by Photoshop slider at 100% it is at 1769MB.  I think, but I'm not sure, that since it running under a 32 bit emulation it's still limited to recognizing the Max of 2GB per application use.  Minus what ever the system is using.  I do beleive that Microsofts next OS(Vista) is supposed to eliminate that 2GB max per app barrier.

Awwww ok. I haven't had to worry about having too much RAM as yet. :tongue1:

stew451 ( ) posted Sat, 22 April 2006 at 10:23 PM

I got the memory becasue I was getting frustrated with Bryce, Vue, and Hexagon freezing up or just refreshing way too slow on me when I had a lot of objects in the scene. :cursing: Now if it could only help me make some decent pictures it will truly be worth the price
