Subject: Help!

Propschick ( ) posted Fri, 02 June 2006 at 9:00 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 12:32 AM

Hi, I am a beginner to using Poser. I have Poser 6. Just spent a coupla hundred on Charactors, clothes, items and so forth. But I have an ongoing problem! I cannot use any of these items because:

I cannot figure out what order you use these items!!!  My Figures clothes never fit on right even though I am using Victoria stuff for Victoria. Same goes with hair. When I DO actually get something on my figure, or hair, I go to pose and it all stays in the same spot, while my figure poses.

I have tried and tried to read these tutorials. I get a little bit into them and being a mother, I get distracted lol or I cant seem to get through them as they are so long.

I guess I need just a simplified list of what order to do things in! When to render, when to apply Morphs...do the clothes go on before the hair or does the pose happen first?

I would greatly appreciate any kind soul who could help me through this as I am starting to worry about the money Ive spent on this! I love the results of this program and am just itching to make it work. Have been trying for weeks.

Greatly appreciate any advice anyone here can give me. Please dont refer me to books. ive already vowed I cant spend anymore money until I get some basics down. ( Granted there is not something wrong with my program ).

Thank you!

Jackie

for hair or clothing that appears in your figures section of the library: select the article and goto the 'Figure' pull down and click on 'Conform To...'

this will give you a dialog box where you select the figure to conform to. in this case you will want to pick the human figure you are trying to dress.

for hair that appears in the hair section of your library you will want to select the figure that needs the hair prior to inserting the hair. It should automaticly parent to the head of that figure.

I have a Poser for Dummies tutorial on my site L It's written for Poser 5 but in this case the difference between Poser 5 and 6 is only which character it loads with at startup.

See if it's of any use: http://trekkiegrrrl.dk/tut1.htm :o)

Under "Document Display Style", usually located at the bottom left corner of your screen, is a horizontal row of clickable circles. Some look solid, some look like wire frames etc. The one on your far right, when you hover your mouse over it, should change the words "Document Display Style" to "Texture Shaded (Ctrl-9)"

This is the display style that gives you the closest look to a finished render in the work window, with colors. Click that right half circle or click Ctrl+9 keys simultaneously, and you will see your display change.

You can then goto Edit>General Preferences, and a small popup window will appear. Click the "Set Preferred State" button here, and your poser will always open with Texxture Shaded style active. I usually make sure Ive got a blank workspace before I do this, by hitting the delete key while any part of the default poser figure the program opens with is selected and confirming I want that figure gone from the workspace.

hope this helps,

Logan

As to the disappearing items,  anytime you import a figure from your characters library, wether it be a human(oid)/animal, clothing article, or conforming hair, It will replace the last figure imported if you use the single checkmark button. The double checkmark button allows you to bring in figure after figure without replacing anything already in your scene.

Propschick ( ) posted Fri, 02 June 2006 at 12:41 PM

Got it thanks!

I still cannot clothe or put hair on my figure as every time I add an item the other disappears. I am conforming each item to the figure......Getting really frustrated here.

logansfury ( ) posted Fri, 02 June 2006 at 12:48 PM

try a simple experiment:

If you have a scene in the works, save it as a .pz3 then restart your poser 6 to start fresh.

Then

  1. open figures library, and select a human, use single check button to create first figure. Click on Figure > Use Inverse Kinematics and uncheck anything with a checkmark usually this is the legs

  2. find an article of clothing from figures library, something you are sure is a conformer and single click on the thumbnail to select the clothing. You will note that when you do this, the bottom of the column now displays a single AND double checkmark buttons. This is poser realizing you have a figure imported so its giving you option to add to scene or replace figure in scene. Use the double checkmark button to add an additional figure

  3. Make sure clothing is selected, click Figure>Conform To and choose the  human

  4. pick a conforming hair from figures library, use double check button Conform hair to figure

  5. goto your Pose library select a pose, make sure you have your human, not clothing or hair selected (Figure 1 Body) then apply the pose to the figure. Your char should pose, and the hair and clothing should pose with the fig.

Propschick what is the name of the figure and the name of the clothing item you are working with? I suspect you may be trying to work with clothing that wasnt designed for the figure you are using.

Propschick ( ) posted Fri, 02 June 2006 at 1:41 PM

Daz's Victoria3 and any article of clothing that includes a V3 with the name.

hm.  allow me to inject a dose of realism.  if you can't find the time during the day, and don't want to invest much effort because you're too busy with the rest of your life (which is completely understandable), most software will remain a frustrating mystery to you.  it's not about you being a dummy (poser is not that hard; you can write and read, i am positive you can figure it out :), but it is about concentration, and anchoring beginner skills in your memory and your fingers.  creating art of any kind requires that one learn the skills, from the ground up.  even if you use no computer at all, if you were trying to learn oil painting the flowers in your neighbour's garden, you'd have to learn about how oil paint behaves, how to hold brushes, about colour mixing, and many other things.  putting hair and clothes on your first poser figure is the mere start; there is lots of learning yet to come if you want to create something you can be proud of, or at the very least can have fun with.

i suggest that you pick a time, 30-60 min every couple of days, when your kids are asleep, and you're done with chores, and give poser your undivided attention.  then try those beginner's tutorials which are giving you trouble now.  start at the very beginning; don't try to jump ahead.  i bet you'll find them pretty easy when you're not trying to do 10 different things at once.  later, when you've learned the basics, it'll be easier to fit poser into your busy day, but i've yet to meet anyone who can learn foundations well without a quiet environment in which one can concentrate.  give yourself that time, and you'll start enjoying poser instead of wanting to throw it against the wall and wondering whether DAZ studio is easier.  it, too, has a learning curve -- anything that has tutorials written for it does.  :)

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 02 June 2006 at 3:48 PM

sometimes making something disappear is an asset..;) Even though clothes are designed for characters, I've noticed sometimes that in extreme poses, the clothes don't fit too well. What I'll do is double-click on the offending body part, uncheck 'visible', and voila..the clothes fit the Vickie..;) The trick is not to click on the same part of the clothing (what I've done sometimes is note the parts that 'stick out', delete the clothing, then make the offenders 'dissapear'. Then just import the clothes back, and conform. Works most of the times (sometimes you miss a spot..;) or you get a hole where the anatomy is..

hope this helps.

"Daz's Victoria3 and any article of clothing that includes a V3 with the name."...

Umm - that could be unfortunate if it's "Version 3" of a specific bit of clothing....

But what's been said above is correct.

Start with a clean "studio" (IE, delete any figure that's already there, by selecting any part of that figure, then hitting the "Delete" key. Answer appropriately to the following pop-up dialogue (Yes, you DO want to delete the figure).
(The above can be done automatically on start-up, but I'll not go into that just now..1 thing at a time..)

Load V3. With V3 (AKA "Figure 1", usually), selected, do, as suggested above, use the menu bar to turn off what is known as "IK". Click the "Figure" menu, select "Use Inverse Kinematics", click on anything that has a check-mark applied to it. For future reference, the shorthand for explaining this type of action is usually something like: "Go to "Figure->Use IK, and uncheck all".

You'll need to do this procedure twice - once for each leg. The only reason for doing this is to make posing of the figure easier in the initial stages of learning.

Now, in the "characters" library, find some V3 clothing. Click ONCE on an item, just so that it highlights (background turns whiter). At the very bottom of that specific library, there will be two icons (among the rest), one a single checkmark (tick), another a double-checkmark. Click the double-checkmark. This will add the clothing to the scene. (If you get a dialogue along the lines of "Do you want to replace the character"... you've hit the wrong checkmark - or I've mislead you. In either case, hit the other checkmark. There should be no dialogue pop-up).

Ensure that the clothing item is selected (you can check this in various ways, moving the mouse into the preview screen (IE the main Posing screen) should highlight the currently selected item; or check what's selected under the left-most arrow, just above the preview screen. If that still says "Figure 1", then click on the arrow, and select the clothing from the drop-down menu).

Go to menu "Figure->Conform To", and select "Figure 1" (The only choice available, apart from "None"). This will conform the clothing to V3 (=Figure 1).

Add another item (using the double check-mark again - you still don't wan't any "replace" pop-up dialogues). Ensure it is selected (as above). Go to menu "Figure->Conform To", and select "Figure 1" (and NOT whatever you loaded as the previous bit of clotjing - you want V3 to control the movements...)

Now select V3 and pose her. The clothing should follow (more-or-less)...

That's about enough for this mini-tut.

I'm sure it could be expressed more clearly and/or succinctly, but I hope it helps..

Cheers,
Diolma

Since you're just starting out, it might be a good idea to start with default poser figures for this part of the learning curve...

Before they made me they broke the mold!

Pleon- ive been spending about 4-5 hours at it a day trying to figure out this program for a month. (About 6 hours so far today and my son has been at school) Bear in mind Im not going from basic computer knowledge to Poser. I have mastered many programs in my years including even making clothing and figures for another 3-d program ( which was much easier ) with tons of background noise and distractions.

Never said I DIDNT have time to learn the program. I have plenty of time. Some of the tutorials I have tried to read just dont make sense to me. Maybe I am dumb, who knows. I just dont have the attention span to read a long tutorial that I dont understand.Trying to read something you dont understand is like trying to learn French when you are reading Italian.

Now for the wonderful tutorials everyone has been providing me with! Thing is, it's still not working for me. I also noticed it seems the folders that go with Poser are a mess. I have clothes in my poses folders- poses in my figures folders- hair in my props folders- props in my hair folder. Thought these additional items I bought from Daz-3d auto installed themselves. Looked that way to me anyhow.

At any rate, I am still struggling with this despite everyone's help. I have this gorgeous figure open and cant keep clothes on her! lol

I am not gonna give up. Just running out of ideas.
