Subject: Online or invisible...

Tablesaw ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2006 at 8:57 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 11:39 AM

Hi Stacey,

Is it possible to shut off the... I am online message that now sits below my avatar? There are times I'd prefer to be invisible.

Thanks.

Hmmm. haven't been asked this yet I don't think so not sure i know the answer but to my knowledge this isn't an option:(  Sorry

Shardz ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 2:24 AM

It should be an option as it's a privacy issue for certain. I've seen this issue been raised a few times, and there are those who don't have time to comment but view, and there's a guilt factor involved here. "He's online, why doesn't he come?". The answer is simple; I'm beating off creditors, nasty girlfriends, stray animals wandering into my house, and trying to model while I'm making dinner while on the phone. Another OPTION that needs to be implemented.

I wish they would get rid of the whole "who's online" area period.  It probably contributes a great deal to the amount of lag this site has.

If the person is online they'll reply.  If not, they'll reply when they are. If they are busy they'll reply when they get a chance.  I see no valid reason for people being able to view who is online at this particluar moment in time.

I've had numerous messages from people I've never heard of and don't know and have never "seen" on the boards send me messages because they saw me online in the "Who's Online", and all they were looking for was someone to chat with or a "new friend".

I don't report these types of things because I don't want to get people into trouble.  But PMs like that wouldn't be an issue if the "who's online" didn't exist, or if you were able to make yourself "invisible" to the feature.

Good points, Acadia!

But I do appreciate the "online now" functionality when it comes to contacting moderators or coordinators. It helps resolving my question more quickly.

Luckily I don't have the PM trouble you have. Probably because those people first hop over to my home page here, see my ugly mug and decide not to talk to me...

runs to look at homepage

I show a "red x" and get a 404 error when I try to view the picture in a new window.

Ah. Well, that red "x" certainly looks better than I do! Maybe I'll get spammed with IM's too now...

LOL, well I wouldn't go so far as to say I was "Spammed". But I have received about 6 or 7 such PM's from total strangers.    But what do you say when someone sends you a message saying "will you be my friend?"   and when you casually ask how they know you, they reply that they saw your  name in the "who's online" list.  hehe

I do take the time to reply and that results in a few back and forth exchanges of PM's.  However, sometimes I'm not feeling social, or I'm in a hurry, or not feeling well.  And when I get a PM I feel obligated to respond, no matter who it's from. I haven't been harassed or hassled though. So that's a plus :)   I guess it's just someone who is lonely looking for someone to talk with  sometimes.

I have to agree with Shardz and Acadia that it is a privacy issue and in being so should be up to us whether we want ...ONLINE NOW... visible or not.

I don't place a sign on my home telling the neighborhood that I am home and I don't think it should be done here unless we as individuals ask for that "option"

 Just my humble opinion.

Doc000 ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 8:54 AM

I have never seen a forum that didn't give it's users the option to be "invisible." If Renderosity is trying to be unique, then leaving that feature off the list is one sure way to do it...although not a very good idea.

`...when someone sends you a message saying "will you be my friend?"'

That's definitely creepy.

Could be it's that cutsie avatar you're currently using. You should get one like DarkStarBurning's leering shark :D

I've been very uneasy about this, too. Before, you had to click to a separate page to see who was online and then scan through a long list...that made the information accessible if you needed it, but some effort had to be made to get it...which I think the an acceptable balance vis-a-vis privacy concerns.

Now, my online status is EVERYWHERE and it's so apparent...in the forums AND the galleries. Yuck!

In this day and age, people are much more concerned about privacy. I'm not very optimistic about getting this changed, based on Stacey's response at the top of this thread. But if & when they install the Bondware package to their paying web customers, I'm certain that those customers' users are going to complain about this too...so I just hope Rendo faces that fact now and makes the change now.

Definitely want the option of whether or not to display my online status!!

ditto on the privacy part...we should have the option to choose whether or not we want everyone to know we are online.

Tablesaw ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 1:34 PM

cliff-dweller...You got that right, before we had  to go to another page and scroll down a never-ending list of names to see who was online. (to much work to even bother)  so the privacy thing wasn't that big of a deal.

What next...GPS, where we can pinpoint exactly where a particular member is and what they are up to at that exact moment?

I simply think that we should be given the option to be or not to be...sorry!

I understand what some are saying but just an FYI that even before on the old system users could know if you were online or not. That has always been around just in a different place now:)

Doc000 ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2006 at 3:41 PM

Yes, but in the old version...as it was already pointed out...online status was in a centralized, out of th way area so that it took some effort to sort through it to find out if someone was online.  Now, every time they see one of your posts in the forum, one of your images, or a comment you've left for someone (and there's probably more instances thanks to this wonderful new software), people know for sure that you're there.  Once again, it's a matter of giving people the option to hide themselves online.  People want options, not mandatory settings.

I know it's always been a feature of this site.

I still feel that you should get rid of the whole "who's online" function completely, be it on the boards, in the gallery, or in the "who's online area".

My experience with people sending me PMs as I describe above sent me a message because they saw my name in the "who's online" area.  "Acadia" shows up close to the top of the list, so it doesn't take much scrolling  to see if I'm online, and it's pretty easy to find my name on the boards since I'm a motor mouth, LOL
