Played with hair for several hours last night. I had mixed results doing hair and beards, via spawning facial parts as props to grow the hair on. Tonight Im going to subdivide the meshes see if smaller triangles will improve the look. Here is what I created on one figure, hair would be great for a Vegas showgirl costume. To me most of my results look more feathery than furry. Another idea is to add hair to animals, like the raptor. This may give it the feathered look that so many have mentioned in prior postings.

kinda brings to mind a good old fashoned "Tar & Feathering"...lol

Y'all have a great day.

Looks like a muppet (and I know, I work on Sesame Street)! is this feature only available on the mac? Is it an easter egg in poser? Is it part of the patch? Aharon

Eshal ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 9:18 AM

Aharon I have a pc....just open poser select a part of the default figure of whatever you want to grow hair on...type the word "hair"(no dialogue box need just type) and up pops a window with dials. Playing with them varies the effect and tadaaa...hair! :) So far I'm having a ball redicoving a function I found when I first got P4 and could never figure out what the heck I'd done to get it in the first place! Regards Eshal

I'm a genetically enhanced blonde...what's your excuse? ~Eshal~

Wow, this has been a well kept secret. I never know about the hair function. I'm going to have to try this. Thanks for the tip. Melanie

LOL this "hairy" thing is insane LOL imagine what could be done... can that stuff be rendered or textured, colored? -Ede

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 9:49 AM

Ede, so far nobody has found a method of using the "hair" outside of a preview screen.

Ede ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 9:52 AM

what for is it then ?

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 10:10 AM

It appears to be an unfinished feature that the programmers never removed - a common occurance in software, actually.

Ede ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 10:14 AM

well, i hope they'll finish it soon it's a good beginning for some cool feature maybe we could want something like shags hair plug or similar maya stuff

I was mistaken. On the Poser Mailing List, there was a discussion as to tricks to pull with this (I'm not on it, so I only have second-hand information), and it can be exported as a 3DS prop, which can then be re-imported as an (apparently) renderable prop. It seems to lose some of the "shagginess" however.

Director ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 10:31 AM

I'll have to try the 3ds export/import. It really would be great to have something like Shag: Fur or Shag: Hair, even Shave & A Haircut would be great as a built in poser feature. Think of all the time it would save us from transmapping, and post work.

Mason ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 11:12 AM

I've tried the 3ds, obj and dxf export. What I get are tons of triangles. Doesn't look at all like the hair in poser. I think they are doing a trick where they maybe only render one edge.

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 12:10 PM

Just to recap what I've found once more. The Hairy Prop Maker can be called up on PC or Mac simply by typing in 'hair' (no quotes) when you open Poser. Select any body part, prop or hair and click 'create new figure', wait around till it appears and play with the Treemaker dials (it's slow!), then press 'Done', go to props menu and you'll find 'Hair 1' This can be saved as a smart prop and color can be changed using Surface Materials. Only way I've found of saving a render so far is File/Export/Image. Still playing with it. maclean

arabinowitz ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 12:53 PM

Does it work for animation as well?

Director ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 10:51 PM

Yeah, all I can get are either triangles or arc shaped objects if I export the hair as DXF or 3ds and then reimport it. But they render. It doesn't make bad grass though. Anyhow you can morph it, you can use magnets, it can be animated etc. I seem to end up making chia pets out of my test critters. ;)

melanie ( ) posted Wed, 16 August 2000 at 11:59 PM

I wouldn't render for me. It just disappeared and became invisible. Melanie

moltingangel ( ) posted Thu, 17 August 2000 at 12:38 AM

It would be great to use to create a Star trek Tribble!

moltingangel ( ) posted Thu, 17 August 2000 at 12:39 AM

even a sasquatch!

CD-RW ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2001 at 3:47 PM

why doesn't anyone ask the POSER PPL if it supposed to be there or not? or how about i do?!?! ;)

Director ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2001 at 4:57 PM

It's an old program that is called Tree Maker. Just type the mystic letters HAIR into poser 4 and boom get a window for putting hair on an object. Check out MASA's furfur program. you can export hair objects in obj form and get them transformed into transmapped hair objs.

melanie ( ) posted Wed, 11 April 2001 at 7:59 PM

Director, where can furfur be found? Melanie

Here you are, try this out. FurFur, it's fun and gives some interesting results. I've gotten everything from a gell cut hairstyle to a colorful pinata effect from it.

melanie ( ) posted Thu, 12 April 2001 at 8:47 AM

Thanks, Director, I just downloaded it. I can't wait to try it. Melanie

Director ( ) posted Thu, 12 April 2001 at 10:57 AM

Good luck ;)

GrayMare ( ) posted Thu, 12 April 2001 at 10:09 PM

At Masa's site you also should get the dropmaker program too. It lets you convert the "hair" into water droplets. Decent ones at that. 'course, I've only made hairy cubes and spheres..(almost said hairy balls.... GrayMare

You can get rid of the triangles by making only straight lines. I tried to make a mohawk using this and layering them but didn't have great results. It might work better in the right hands or maybe it will always be a grass maker. I think the triangles might work for anime hair but,I have not tried that yet.
