Subject: Doctor Who as an instance of facial expressions.

When you get to see the end of David Tennant's first season as the Doctor, Episode 13, pay attention to his face. How big a Poser dial setting do you think you'll need to emulate that emotional expression? Something less than 0.2, I reckon. But it doesn't look emotionless. Think about it. There's a lot of inane, over-acted, expressions that were old-fashioned when Al Jolson said "you ain't heard nothing yet." It's all of them, and the emotion is as much in how somebody stands, or walks; they're acting with their whole body. How many of us do that with Poser? Oh, and it was a great episode.

i agree.  animation is about over acting.  but if you want it to look real you should not notice anything out of place.

i think it's hard to get expressions and body language from actors; i think they are self conscious enough that we are not seeing reality, we're seeing acting.  not that it isn't good...just not real.

love the nick by the way

It was very good.

Yeah. His expression spoke volumes, and was much more affecting than the over-acted clichéd "NOOOOO!" so beloved of science fiction producers.

God, I cried a bucket last night. I thought my heart would break.

Good News: George Lucas is producing a new Doctor Who movie. Bad News: He's writing the script.

George lucas wrote the script for star wars , the empire strikes back, raiders of the lost ark and others so he might be able to write a doctor who film.

As long as it isn`t an american actor as doctor who then it might be ok.

An American version of Doctor Who was already tried, way back in the early 80's. it was called "Voyagers" and it was about a time traveller from a different planet who bounced around earth's past to learn more about us, had a 10 year old boy as a sidekick (which became real creepy, at least the Doctor had a thing for grown up companions). Instead of a Tardis, the traveller used something that looked like a pocket watch. And who could forget Time Tunnel? please, leave time travelling to the professionals!

Actually, Lucas really didn't write the script for The Empire Strikes Back or Raiders of the Lost Ark. Those were both stories by him but not written by. In this case it is a big difference :) I still want to know when scifi will run a Dr. Who Marathon of the last season so I can catch up ...

Wow! 1358 You just brought back a memory from the past there, "Time Tunnel" I used to love that, just brilliant it was!!!

And we have Torchwood in the Autumn, with a new Robin Hood "soon". They had a teaser for that before Doctor Who. I'm so glad that we have the BBC in this country.

If it's any conosolation, Kathy, you're in good company. I'm man enough to confess that I, too, was weeping like a big wuss by the end of the episode. Tennant has managed to do that to me twice in this series now - once in this latest episode, and back in episode 4 (The girl in The Fireplace), when he's reading Madame de Pompadour's final letter to him. Apparently, the woman playing MdP was his real-life girlfriend, so the chemistry there was easy to conjure... but that grief at the end of losing another friend seemed very real, too.

Do you have a link to info on this please?  I've done a Google search but couldn't find anything.

Oh yes, "The Girl in the Fireplace" was a great one, too, very sad at the end. Actually, it's probably my favourite episode from this series, just for the wink he tipped after riding the horse through the mirror...
