Since I have been out of this for a bit i am missing about of info :)  V3 is most of what I was using when i took a break... now there was Judy from p5 and now Jesse..

I am assuming that each is better than the last but wondering why I would use one over the other...  I still like V3 for all the content I have for her, but now that i have jumped P5, I cant see myself using Judy if Jesse is so much better...

what are the main improvements?

thx

I have Judy and Jessie and V3, I still use V3 mostly because I have loads of clothing, character packs etc. for her and anyway Judy is ugly.

I like Jessie but don't have enough stuff for her!!!

Actually, each is not better than the last.

Judy can be quite useful if you buy the Eternal Judy package, though the new morphs are very fiddly, and harder to use than the V3 ones.

Jessi is a basket case. Almost worthless.

I like the P5's (including Judy) the best. They are the most compatible with the Face Room. Great combination for characters heads. The FR mangles the jessie's. Very dissapointing.

I do wish people would couch their opinions as opinions and not as facts! Jesus! Just because YOU don't like Jessi, doesn't mean she's crap in everyone elses opinion. She's certainly not worthless in mine.

Phantast ( ) posted Wed, 07 June 2006 at 9:53 AM

Posting one pic of Jessi is not going to change anyone's mind (particuarly not one where her head looks like an avocado).

Jessi could be made useful if (a) she had some decent morphs, and (b) she could use V2 or V3 textures. As it is, she is too hard to customize to be much use. The morphs in the face room are feeble, suitable only for caricatures. Using the same texture gets old quickly. There are few new ones available, and in any case, I'm not going to start buying a second bunch of skin textures when I have loads I've bought for V3. I want to use those.

Okey dokey.  Here's a fun fact about Jessi.  Her arms are too short.

OK, maybe I'm strange (well, I'll admit it, I AM strange), but Jessi does have potential, and Glamorous Jessi (GJ) fixes a lot of the issues with the original Jessi.  In fact, GJ is one of the most flexible figures available for Poser.  Sure, default Jessi has an odd head, and short arms, and big hands/feet.  But hey, very few of us on this planet have "perfect" proportions!  It doesn't take much to tweak the proportions on Jessi  to something acceptable, if you can't stand the default.  Or, for a very modest price, you can get GJ (at Content Paradise) and have a Jessi with supermodel like proportions, and great flexibility!

I still use V3 a lot, simply because there is a lot stuff available for her, but I atually prefer the default Jessi over the default V3 (with hair to cover the odd head on Jessi), and GJ is great to work with!

Ok, that's my 2 cents worth!  Now I'll just sit back and watch all the complaining about Jessi.

Facially, I quite like Jessi. It's fairly easy to "un-Jessify" her with magnets or external morphs, whereas I find it quite difficult with V3. Her short arms are a drawback though, and the other main drawback is the lask of content (free and for purchase.)
Glam Jessi does a good job of fixing her joint issues.

V3 has her own issues but she has such a huge amount of support in terms of textures, clothing, etc that it's easy to see why she is preferred. From meandering through the galleries, I'd say 75% of the female figures used are V3, with 24% of the remainder being made up of Aiko, Steph and Miki. Jessi's 1%... if that.

So the snowball just keeps on rolling downhill and we get more clothing, more textures, more hair... because after all, that's what sells... and it sells because people use V3 because there's no content for the other figures... so people make more of it... Well, you get the picture.

I seem to remember when Vicki first came out... basically the same argument :)  I thought the default vicky was pretty ugly at first... then picked up Jims glamourous Vicki and people started following suit with new items.

I think that Jessi will have the same potential... it is the individual artists that bring these figures to life.
Boy, that gets me thinking back to when there was no store and we just had the freestuff :)  things have changed over the years :)

Maybe nobody has "perfect" proportions but last time Iooked, human arms bent at the waist and fingertips ended up around mid thigh.  Crotch is around midway up the total body length and legs bend halfway along their own length.

Anyone who doesn't pretty much follow that pattern - give or take a couple of inches - be they short, tall, skinny or fat is disproportionate.

The main thing to be aware of with Jessi and Miki is that they look good (the modeling on Miki is particularly superb) in non-extreme poses only, since they are jointed up Poser 4 style (no buttock groups). Kind of like an expensive sports car, only the steering is limited to 10 degrees either way.

Oh, and welcome back to Poserdom, Darrin :)

In making simple walk animations with the Poser WalkDesigner, I found that unimesh figures like V3 not compatible.   V3's body semi-collided together while walked in zombie like crooked way in animations created using Poser's WalkDesigner.   But I did that animation test about 2 years ago, and maybe there has been update for V3 to work better with Poser animations.

However, as time goes by, I gradually like V3 the most for the vast amount of contents (clothings, textures, hair, etc) that have been created for her.  And in a time-killing hobby, I sometimes spend my free time browsing the RM to see what character morphs are selling.   And I find that V3 has the greatest variety of beautiful custom facial morphs available for sale.   Therefore, when not making animations, I often use V3, and sometimes Miki or Stephanie3, to morph my characters.

I echo the opinion that P5 Judy's Face Room morphs are more flexible than P6 Jessi's Face Room, but I haven't tried using magnets function to change Jessi's face yet.   Maybe when I get the hang of magnet function, I'll like Jessi better.

Miki, Koji, Jesse and James are all supposed to be getting an update "soon" to fix some issues and enhance things... not sure on any details yet, eFrontier are being a bit cagey, all I know is that they told me they would fix hi-res James' fingernails with this release! But there's been speculation that the new "G2" release may enable texture sharing and/or clothes sharing.

Maybe this is just me.  But none of the models are suppose to be the ultimate model.  I mean, Universal. The  version 3 of the millenium figures do seem to come closest with thier versitility and morphablility but they all have a distinct "personality" and that causes limit to facial individuality.  You can always tell a millenium face.  but they do make a variety of figures for image work.  I still use P4 figures once in a while (not P3 so much) and even if the project requires ... P2 and P1.  I'm just glad we  have such a nice veriety.  Dina I really like ... and with conforming clothes her wardrobe is expandable.   Eve ... not much use lately.  I've done some things with Judy that I didn't think I could do (See sample I made for this thread) ... she was trashed like crazy in the beginning ... Jessi, I'm having fun with.  Kate ... I like having an older child in my cast of characters.  I still use V1, V2, M1 and M2 according to the image needs.  I really like James for his unique face.  I also really like the new hand and feet  morphs in P6 figures.  So they all have thier pluses and minuses ... but few if any are set to go "out of the box".   I've not mentioned the Manga characters because I only use those for specific projects as I'm not as involved with Manga work, although I'm totally open to it.  We all have unique needs and feelings about the different models.  We  use these models very intimately.  posing, morphing etc. as if they are an extension of ourselves.  It makes us passionate about our oppinions on them.  We are all as individual as the way we use the models.  Okay, that's my tome on the topic.  Trash it if you like.

What really bothers me about Jessi is that the figure has been out for a year now, and there is still woefully little support for it.  It has its uses, but without support, it's usefulness is very limited.  I blame Curious Labs for this, they should have planned better and stepped up with more 3rd party vendors supporting her.

I guess my whole family and the group of friends I was chatting with are all disproportionate. My arms bend just beneath the Pectoral Muscle, my finger tips reach just past my crotch, and my inseam from the floor is 32 inches on my 6 foot  1 inch frame. As a matter of fact with the eight people (5 male and 3 female) I was just in chat with, all found that their inseam from the floor was closer to 43% than 50%, and none had an inseam that was greater than 46% of their height, one exception to this, and that was my wife who has an inseam of 52% of her height, and she is nearly 6 feet tall. (inseam of 37.5 to the floor) Yes, she has a hard time finding long pants that fit, and can not wear heels of any sort with long pants.

To state what is normal, is sort of like that doctor from the turn of the century that stated he could tell intelligence based on head shape. He went on to state that he could tell when people had mental deficiencies based on their head shape. He was a quack that a lot of other quacks expanded upon his ideas as to the perfect human speciman.

Shoot, even Da Vinci had to alter his image of man to make it fit his ideal proportions. One thing I learned in Anatomy and Anatomy for drawing was there is no proper proportions in the human form. There is prefered, but that is also influenced by culture more than nature.

All the out of the box figures are ugly .It depends on morphing surgery ;). The main point for me is how joints behave and what issues are on the base mesh.Judy f.ex. has some accidently welded vertices in her lower spine.V3 has a pinhead and some odd thigh defomations when bending.Despite of  this one of my favorites is Mr.Yamato's V2P5 hybrid.

This "who's ugly" thing always seems to draw the ugly side out of perfectly nice people. I suppose it's because we can sneer and jeer at the looks of a mesh without hurting the meshes feelings, and sneering and jeering reminds us of the fun days in primary when we could make fun of Matilda Cleland's butt till she cried.

No model is perfect, and none of the three squabbled over here is an exception. What bothers me about Judy and Jessi is that eF/CL didn't take the time to improve the mesh when real errors surfaced, like the bump on Judy's nose, etc. "Big hands" and "short arms" are not, as RatC has pointed out, an "error" any more than Ellen Barkin's nose is a "mistake." I wrestled with the Cosmo Aesthetes sneering at Judy's disgusting normalness till I got tired of it. I think Jessi is flat-out gorgeous and Vickie has the vacuous, bovine look of a Baywatch pneumatic. All, of course, "out of the box." Vickie III is the best mesh -- which is an entirely different question, and comparing Gen I Judy/Jessi with Gen III of the most popular mesh around. In other words, what's the surprise.

Personally, I prefer Steph I to the whole bunch, and SP3 [sic], who takes most of V3's morphs, for versatility. And I say prefer because it's a matter of preference, not some sort of categorical imperative. Personally, I've always hoped Matilda grew up to be a dish, and I wish she could send a picture to each of the slack-bellied, bulb-nosed twerps who teased her back then.

I don't want to trash anyone ... but the biggest disapointment I had for Poser 6 is that the wardrobes were ... abismal compared with P5.  What's with the snow boots?   I want fashion and western boots, they are the most versitile ... and no bodysuit.  Hard to make SF and Fantasy costumes without them.  I know that eF/CL wanted us to go to Content Paradise and join to get more clothes etc., but even there the choices are less than from P5.  And you can't buy without being a member.  That's frustrating.  I love their stuff as I do DAZ and here ... but I don't have money to buy this stuff.  It's dishaertening that there isn't more free stuff for Jessi, James, Kate and Ben.  I can't rely on dynamics all the time.  No situation is perfect.  But some of these challenges can be a little daunting at times.

Frankly, I think Jessi is drop-dead gorgeous, but in the sort of challenging way that lovers of the glorious, bovine Vickie can't appreciate. Jessi thinks with her mouth shut. When Jessi looks you in the eye, you stay looked. Same thing with Miki. There was a bit of that in Steph, who always struck me as the sort of girl who traipses off to Utah State, becomes a civil engineer, and considers not having kids. In other words, the family's special grey sheep and at least she hasn't started drinking!!

Judy has the look of a nice, normal, better than average girlfriend/wife/co-worker/boss. A little worried about her hips, but who isn't, and at least she didn't get short changed on top. She is perfectly capable of bicycling uphill, digging up a garden, putting some mouthy guy in his place, and even fixing a damn flat if she has to. Now those are good bones.

I like Jessi's basic shape much more than any version of Victoria.  While she is a little cartoonish (like an Action Comic figure) the basic shape is pretty good, other than her head dome.

V3, on the other hand, while possably a good starting point for morphs, is exactly nowhere in basic shape, she isn't young, she isn't old, she has a rather "squareish" body shape, combined with too-small head and too-large breasts.

However, V3 bends pretty well, stock Jessi is very bad in this area.

You can fix the problems though, I sorta tried to do that with both of 'em!

Phantast ( ) posted Fri, 21 July 2006 at 5:14 AM

The two big problems with Jessi are lack of texture support, and poor face morphs. Some way of getting V2 or V3 textures onto her is essential if the figure is going to have much future. And the crude face morphs you get in the face room will not generate many interesting results.

Someone needs to do an "Eternal Jessi". "Eternal Judy" really rescued the P5W.

-Timberwolf- ( ) posted Fri, 21 July 2006 at 7:55 AM

I am really fed up with V3 ,but the unimesh UV-Maps seems to be the best  mapping solution at all.I wish there was an easy way to make V2 and Judy taking V3 textures.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Fri, 21 July 2006 at 8:51 AM

Phantast, Jim Burton, you know, the guy who posted just before you did, has already created an Eternal Jessi. She's called "Glamerous Jessi" and she's for sale at Content Paradise last time I checked.

There are a few really good texture sets out there for Jessi. Not nearly as many as for DAZ figures no, but there's more than 5. And I've gotta ask, have you actually bought the Ultimate Face Morphs pack from RDNA or are you just dissing them on principle because you don't like Jessi's stock face.

Phantast ( ) posted Fri, 21 July 2006 at 10:08 AM

I didn't know about the RDNA morphs, so I'm not dissing them. What I'm dissing is the inflexibility of face of the stock figure. Whether or not you like Jessi's basic face, the fact remains that the ability to change it in the face room is very limited unless you want to make grotesques.

Glamorous Jessi is NOT Eternal Jessi. Quote from the CP product page: "She takes the same body and head textures as standard Jessi ...". Eternal Judy takes V2 textures. That's why Eternal Judy is so critically useful.

Just to spell it out once more: until Jessi can take V2 or V3 textures, she's a dead duck as far as I'm concerned.

LostinSpaceman ( ) posted Fri, 21 July 2006 at 11:06 AM · edited Fri, 21 July 2006 at 11:10 AM

Well that's good to know about the V2 textures since I just bought EJ last week. As for Jessi taking V2 or V3 textures? I personally would prefer it if people would just make new ones for her. Not everyone wants their world or their runtimes to revolve around DAZ figures.

I haven't worked Jessi in the faceroom as much as I have James so I can't say how well or how badly she performs there. I've gotten one or two faces in there that I think look quite nice on her.

None of the DAZ figures even work in the facerooom though and you have to buy all the extra morphs for them to change their appearance so why Jessi's considered bad if you have to buy morphs for her too is beyond me.

The base Jessie  is the ugliest character I have ever seen. E-Frontier should be ashamed to provide such a misshapen and deformed creature. She looks like an alien. At least the base V3 looks human.
I don't care how many morph packages they make, I refuse to use Jessie. Poor work should not be rewarded with acceptance.

svdl ( ) posted Sat, 22 July 2006 at 4:25 AM

Judy takes V2 textures too, and Don takes M2 textures. Not flawlessly, there are some minor seam problems that only show up in closeups. Eternal Judy has been remapped to take V2 textures flawlessly.

Judy and Don are fairly low-poly, and unless you use the smooth polygons option of the Firefly renderer they tend to render somewhat "blocky", not really attractive.

Eternal Judy is a massive workover of the base Judy, a much smoother body shape and an incredible amount of face morphs. AnAn by Yamato is another good morph pack for Judy, turning her into a lovely Oriental woman.

Glamorous Jessi is much, much more than just a morph package. The entire mesh has been recut, she has been reboned (bends much better than the original Jessi) and she has much better hands and feet.

Another figure that is worth looking at is Nea, a Posette workover, here in freestuff. Not too good in closeups, but excellent for midrange and long range renders! And an incredible amount of morphs.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

mickmca ( ) posted Sat, 22 July 2006 at 11:33 AM

Do you own a dictionary? Look-up ambiguous. Then look-up insipid!
Perhaps you should look up "look-up"? And then you might consider whether i said "ambiguous" out of politeness rather than illiteracy. Then you might think (did they talk about thinking at your school?) about the inherent contradiction between "insipid" and "ugly."

Of course, you are using the word "insipid" so inappropriately I can't tell if you mean to slam my comment or Jessi's looks. And that's not "ambiguity," it's incoherence. As for my previous reference to ambiguity, let me spell it out: "The ugliest thing I've ever seen" could be serve as a measure of the thing's ugliness or of the limitations of your experience. If Jessi really is the ugliest thing you've ever seen, you should try to get out more. Bookworms and pedants never get to smell the roses.

Oh, and not only do I own a dictionary, I was a second-string SME for the first edition of  the American Heritage. Be careful what snake you jab.
