Subject: Your " Holy Grail" photograph

babuci ( ) posted Tue, 18 July 2006 at 8:30 PM · edited Mon, 03 February 2025 at 11:07 AM

Hi Citizens of Planet R.R!

We all like to take photograph, some of us love landscape while others shot just as nice portrait or a mindblowing macro! I am sure all of us have a dream suject to take shot of.  So here is a tread about our  "Holy Grail shot" !

Mine is a Northlight ( aurora boreau ) and an erupting volcano!  What is yours ?

seeyus  Tunde

FuzzyShadows ( ) posted Tue, 18 July 2006 at 10:04 PM

Erupting volcano? GULP.  I hope you have a BIG telephoto lens. I think my dream shots would be of a salmon run with grizzly bears feeding. That too, with a BIG telephoto lens.

girsempa ( ) posted Tue, 18 July 2006 at 10:08 PM

Hm, I haven't thought of that yet, Tunde... I never think in terms of favorite subjects; I just want to make the best possible photograph, whatever the subject is. There was something I really wanted to photograph a few days back, so I drove off at night to take pictures of the rising sun above the Cap Blanc Nez in France. I have around 50 absolutely gorgeous pictures that I thought were amongst the best that I have ever made: beautiful shots of the early sunlight reflecting in the ripples on the beach, with the Cape as backdrop... I posted one tonight, and hardly got any response on it... I was so shocked! Then I saw that none of the pictures in the gallery got any views or comments, except two nude images, which got more views and comments than all the other images combined... Maybe I should change my favorite subject...? Which led me to thinking that the whole system of commenting and viewing in the gallery has absolutely nothing to do anymore with photography whatsoever... but perhaps that's off-topic for this thread...

Hmmm.....fascinating thread. Hmmm....lets see....I would like to pick the same favs as you guys have actually, lol. Except for the northern lights though....cause i´ve already done that. :tt2: Another thing i would love to photograph, would be great white sharks feeding.....although from one of them cages of course. :bored:

About responses in the gallery, i think you´re right about that Geert. I´ve also seen less and less people commenting.....although more and more seem to upload. There´s alot of new members here, but still it seems like it´s only us "old-school-prior-to-the-format-change-members" that take the time to leave any feedback these days. Might just be that most are just trying to enjoy the summer we europeans have now and don´t have time for it as well. 😄

Geert - I think the weather is probably effecting viewing figures, both for here and US.

Maybe the the others you refer to need a cold shower

Oh yeah photograph - hmmmmmmmmm- Tony Blair canoodling with Laura Bush round the back of a swanky night club. It will make me a fortune and I can buy loads of camera equipment and spend the rest of my days taking all the shots I want

Oooooooops -  I'll have to think about it and get back to you with a proper answer .

Great idea for a thread Babuci :)

ROTFLMAO @ Richard! That would indeed make you a fortune. I´d think you´d have better luck catching Sven Göran Eriksson doing something like that though....although seeing how he cheats on his wife once a week it probably wouldn´t pay for a new UV-filter, lol. :tt2:

Thanks Geert. Yup i´m doing just great....actually started commenting a little today as well. As i´m not allowing comments myself i´ve found that it´s alot easier being selective with a clearer conciense. 😄

Very interessant thread Babuci...

That's true that all photographers have their own priority.... I like very much to take a photo of details, as one hand, of a key, of an eye or simply of the belly of a pregnant woman... Those are his details which I love photographing. Afterwards, all rest is because it is necessary to know how to touch in a little of everything and I like to learn new techniques or simply to test these new techniques.

Well, i don't like very much to take the paysage / landscape because is not my style but i like to see this one in the gallery...

Girsempa, I understand what you think. You know this world, the nudity artistic have more commentary of other picture. Is for that, I don't post a lot photo to i take in studio with my model s, because I don't like when the person see my post anly for see a model or her breasts, and is for that i don't put never the face of the model or I need to put a litlle dark more in the breasts or  other part... Well, someone post mine is very provocativ but the majority shot is only a detail or I game with the lighting... I have a good experiency in studio because i work for 2 agency in Seville (spain), and i see the same history in it. The provocativ work of nudity is only the style work with a more viewings, is a like  number of views with the people to create with style Poser program ...

I use only my D50 of nikon and i tested with my phone but i don't like very much the resolution adn for working that in PSP or other program is very dificult...

All people in RR is disctinct and all people no think the same... Is same in the real life, i think....

Hugs

Dream photos? There are so many. A photo shoot with Angelina Jolie, a wilderness excursion through picturesque rugged moutain terrain, photos taken of Earth from orbit - heck, even photos on another planet! My holy grail shot? I'm not sure, but it would have to be something like that one photo on the National Geographic cover of that Afghan girl. Something that captures your attention immeadiate and holds it. Something unforgettable. *Heck, many of NG's images are worth aspiring too* ps. Geert, your latest photos are wonderful, keep posting what makes you happy. I need to visit more often...

I agree...NG do have some mindblowing images from time to time.....and that Angelina Jolie wasn´t such a bad pick either. Can i change my sharks for her instead?

Sound cool so far! You guys really down to earth ppl!  No wild wishing , except Angie, but that understandable.  David Beckam,...hmmm I thought he is, matter of time to catch him there!  keep try Richard You will have your shot! Hihi

Geert! Nothing wrong with your shots,  most of the time I comment on them, if not sorry b'cause I am busy making money, I have not win a lotto yet, so it is a must do time to time ( yes, I did buy a ticket). I reallized a downfall in comments myself, probably the summer season a reason or just this " next generation of slack commenting new members "  True is I like to have comments from ppl usually leave some line on my upload, this is a kinda connection between us. Some really regularly comment, it is mean to me he/she interesting in my work , proccess. This is what is count for me a most, not a quantity.

ohhhh, I am off track myself....back to dream shot. Yeah as Kort said, the earth in orbit, that would be a something.

Ha, no wild wishing...? Now that I come to think about it, I always dreamed of shooting pictures of the earth after a major nuclear disaster, when there's no people left... but who would comment on my pictures then...?

Tunde, in truth I suspect my "holy grail" photo will be one totally unexpected, surprising me by being there when I am actually prepared to make the shot and do it well. That will be mine.

I do have one image in thought, in thought for about a year now.  This is a "studio" shot, considering the studio would be the part of my driveway where I park my old Toyota truck.  The photo will be nothing more than a wonderful rendering of an art arrangement.   I have thought out the props, the lighting, the model...all over and over again.  To do it will mean a work of art in my driveway, for the moment needed to take the shot correctly with the precise lighting needed.  This will be controversial to some viewers...to other it will perhaps be a peek at their soul on a confused search for religion.  My religious views are firm but that does not keep me from exploration of the thoughts of others and the choices of life they face when seeking something they do not yet understand.  That in a nutshell is the theme...now to some day put the art together so it IS art and then with in another art, photograph so the thought is conveyed fully and powerfully...that is one "grail" in my thought, though not perhaps the "holy grail".            Tom.

thanks for the very interesting thread! : )

I guess the ultimate for me would to be flying in a helicopter over some glaciers, and then some really nice alpine mountains. After that returning  home some city scapes with sun going down from about 1000 feet  altitude.  Second choice would be for doing some nice model shoots in a old heritage loft with the flaked paint and old wall radiators.
I have this vision of a room I would have to design and build, then have a model wearing different clothes and various poses. Be cool to have a name for fashion magazines.
I would like that.

Doug, your grail has high hopes and paints a fine image in the imagination. Perhaps some of us will find those shots.

Oddly enough Doug if I had to think about it.. I was once lucky enough to take a shot of a Bird of Prey from a helicopter in Canada a Bald Eagle.. And perhaps a shot I took of a sunset over a canal with a wide angle while I waited luckily  a Swan flew in spraying water and the sun backlighting its wings I won a few competitions  with that shot, and was able to afford my first real SLR a Canon A1 and a few lenses in 1980 been hooked ever since.. I had my images with an Agency who went bust and lost over 3000 negs and slides never been keen on em ever since!!

hrm - i think i would love to be that astronaught that takes the photos of the earth, or one from a high altitude plane of the sunrise...  that blue to black and the earth below would just be spectacular :)

And i suppose there will be something in the back of my mind that i can pull out of the bag when/if i get a massive macro lens, because that opens up a realm of insect/small animal possibilities ;)

And you guys are right about the whole commenting thing - i know i am not a great commenter (most people dont need me to comment on things coz i only repeat what others say...so i do try to comment something constructive on photos that havent got anything except "good shot").  I posted up an image i now think of as one of my top 10 shots and 14 people looked at it and no comments - it was in object gallery.  I think i am going to take a shot of my GF nude this weekend and see what happens ;)

The one image I would love to capture one day (my Holy Grail shot) would be that of a new species of some colourful undersea lifeform, preferably one with bioluminescence!  That would be absolutely divine!

Fishing off the Outer Banks, well from the beach of the point at Hatterras, I could see glow worms in the surf. Very neat! Now, undersea and luminous..that would be very special indeed.

Holy Grail? More like Holy Grails............. I have many, many, many!!!! LOL ;p

NG has always been the photographs to aspire to, but I also have a huge heart for the masters of the outdoors....... Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, Etc. I was lucky enough to meet Galen before he was killed in a plane crash, what an amazing man!!!!!!!

I would also love to take photos like Tomas Kinkade paints....... to be able to capture lighting like that!!!!!!!

Bentchick, I too would love to capture that light.  I believe some is postwork, whether wet darkroom or digital.  Still, the original must have the right light to start with with empahsis here and there. Yes, totally agree...the artists you mention are to aspire to being even close to..in their shadows would be pretty pleasing to me.  I do hope you someday find one of your grails fulfilled.     Tom.

I’m not sure the Holy Grail exists. Does it?

For me the Holy Grail shot cannot exist either, because I am always looking for something more, so if I get a shot that I think is superb, in time it will just be another shot, I have many like that, that I once thought were superb.

I once saw a shot of two dolphins swimming together inside a breaker, it won the photographer the BBC “photographer of the year award” getting a shot like that would be cool, but still not the holy Grail.

They wouldn’t have made the cane if you weren’t meant to break the rules
