Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 11 2:52 am)
It depends. If you have a reflection in it, or some other detailed shader setting, it will sometimes take a very long time, depending on the size of the output render.
One test I have is I move the cursor to the pop-up and hover over "cancel" on it. If it flickers, then Poser is indeed rendering, but if it remains "solid" then it's stuck.
And remember, sometimes it's your system being pushed to it's maximum memory/page file limits that makes it take so long.
I'm using Poser 6 now, SR3, so most of those issues have been quelled.

Oh, yes, shadow maps sometime take a long time too.
At least you made it to the rendering phase. Sometimes, before SR3, Poser 6 would stall on creating the shadowmaps/adding objects/textures. I waited nearly 12 hours before it actually began to render, and then it quit, saying it ran out of memory/couldn't find texture, etc. Now THAT was painful :)
If a render takes too long, I usually stop it, and then go back and lower the texture sizes again, and reduce the size of shadow maps, delete more morphs, etc until Poser actually works.
I've found that if I need to do heavy reflections, or use lots of spotlights, D|S is faster. You just have to tweak things again that D|s had trouble importing. But it renders like a dream, and very quickly.

OMG! You so need to read that thread! You definitely need a program called STOMP. The link and a small tutorial is in that thread. Basically what STOMP does is defrag your object files to get rid of stuff that clogs up Poser during rendering.

I had read that STOMP worked for hair that stalled out a render. I didn't know it also could work for any object to reduce it's rendering time. That's good to know.
The only time I tried STOMP was for some hair that was stalling out a render. The hair I was using comes in two parts. The bangs worked out fine but the cap part of the hair was a problem. It appeared like it loaded but it was nowhere to be found. Like it was coming in invisible. And it rendered in draft that way too. I deleted the obj file I sent thru STOMP and put back the back up obj file and it still seemed to load being invisible. I've since reinstalled it from the zip file and haven't tried it again. Kinda afraid to. I'm also kinda afraid to try STOMP on anything else.
Ouch jefsview! 12 hours to find out it wasn't going to render it. This render has been baking for a little over 12 hours. Poor machine is still trying to work on it. At some point I might stop it and do the tweaks I should have done in the first place to try to reduce the render time. There's a lot of stuff in the scene that won't be showing up in the actual image.
Thanks for all the advice!

I've had that invisible hair problem too now and then, usually with Quarker's Baby Doll hair. It will load, and it's there in the list, but it won't render. I've found going into the Geometries folder and deleting the .rsr file before using it usually does the trick. But I have to do it every time I want to use this particular hair.

Here is the picture of the settings you save with.

Okay... I have been busy tweaking this file trying to reduce the render time. As luck would have it, it does include some dynamic cloth.... I tried to change it into a single frame by highlighting the 30th frame and dragging it to the 1st key frame. But the 30th frame doesn't want to move over to the 1st key frame. Any ideas what I am doing wrong or is there another way to save this as a single frame?
Again I'm using Poser 5

Any reason why you want to move the 30th frame to render? Why not just move the dial all the way to the right and render the last frame?
All I ever do when working with dynamic cloth is save the file as normal with all it's frames. Then when I want to render a single image, I go to the frame I want to render and render that one frame, which is usually the very last one.

I know that when a Poser render is adding objects for too long of a time it's probably stuck... What if the rendering pop-up is showing but the line has been under the n in 'ing' for about six hours?
I'd hate to shut it down if it's actually working on a render.... but I don''t want to wait if it's stuck.
By the way, it's Poser 5
