Subject: Poser 7 Wants

Yea, I know this has already been done to death but I thought of a couple pf things I'd like.

1   Billboards like in V5I that rotate to face the camera as you move it.

I know you can make your own [thanx to PhilC] but they don't rotate like the Vue ones with the camera.

2   A proper Copy and paste also like Vue has where I can copy and paste a fully clothed figure or prop or whatever and have it there instantly!

Again I know the workarounds of saving the figure to the library to be used again, or just adding the same prop so many times, seems such a waste of time if you could do a copy/paste instead!

Incidentally, the copy/paste in Poser now, I've never understood what it does, not a lot for me so far [rofl] so if anyone can let me know what it's supposed to do I'd be grateful!

Thanx!

Injustice will be avenged.

Boy, I have a long wishlist for Poser 7, but then I never get the feeling that anyone at EF is particularly interested.

Copy in poser copies the values of the morph dials of the selected part so you can paste them on another. It works only if the morphs are called the same.

PhilC ( ) posted Sat, 02 September 2006 at 5:09 AM

Billboards, ensure that the center point is at the billboard's center and the end point is normal to it. Then use "Point At" and select the required camera.

Copy/paste will copy the current actor's parameter settings and past them to the current actor.

Hm. Lot's of people were saying that about e-on software...right up until the feature list for Vue 6 came out, which was pretty much everyone's suggestions and then some. Frankly, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if EF hasn't gone a checking, and found out exactly what kind of feeding frenzy they would be letting themselves in for if they did tell us anything (California Dreaming and the associated threads, anyone?). If they are doing the core code rewrite, then it will take as long as it takes.....

Tyger_purr ( ) posted Sat, 02 September 2006 at 11:25 AM

well the rumors are around that P7 will be out this year so you best make your wishlist read "Poser 8"

If the changes in shade are telling of what EF will do then they definatly do listen. They added a feature to Shade that i requested. Now my request wasnt huge but it was implamented... and some of my requests were not, so it doesnt mean everything is put in.

Oh, I remember California dreaming, but then they did exactly no listening to their user base. P5 came out and was universally hated. (I just read that they made it free. I hope it does not turn more people off and drives them to DAZ Studio...)

I know what you mean about the feeding frenzy, but Silo proves that you can design a new product together with your users, be 8 months late, and still keep everyone happy.

I must be the exception to the rule then because i liked Poser5 (after SR4,lol) and the material room was alot better than in P4.

I cant say that there was much improvement in P6, but the cosmetic work does help and make things look better (still hate the artifacts from caused by some lights and objects)

I hope there is more improvent in P7 over P6 than there was from P5 to P6  Global illumination and radiosity etc.... and some sort of render farm ????? put some use into my other computers and maybe a quad core 64bit version????

Then again when people realize how much more powerful P5 is, it could turn them off of
DAZ studio.  Maybe if someone is new at it and all they have is DAZ studio they can
figure it out, but I could never acomplish much with DAZ studio and don't really care
to take the time to learn it.  I find Poser much easier to use.

shedofjoy, IBL is a form of Global Illumination (akin to HDRI, but not using the extra luminance values of HDRI). (?)
California Dreaming was exactly that - they were dreaming that the splotched upgrades would quell the requests for underlying changes (undos, memory, copy/paste, and so on).  There were improvements and there were horrid disasters.  Most importantly, there were few changes to the underlying problems (none for the most part).

The material room is great - but the documentation is horrid and it requires a degree in Physics to become proficient with it.  Lead by example, not by detailed schematic jargon...

As stated, better a year late and 'perfect' than a year early and abyssmal.  See Maxwell Renderer for an amazing debauchery - with prepay to be debauched.  These guys took the money, and then went on vacation instead of fulfilling their targets and promises.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

Hop over to e-on's site and check the specs on the upcoming Vue 6; both the Infinite and Esprit version implement per-item light creation.

Have you checked out Vue 6? Particularly with V6I, you get -all- that and more. Plus the new version coming out is advertised as importing the Poser shader tree effects as well. Poser does what it does well, but you really need an external renderer if you intend to do animations, and the best out of the box at the moment is Vue. OH yeah, V6I is going to be both 32 and 64 bit, and has been multiprocessor aware since V4Professional. And the network render system is nice....

shedofjoy ( ) posted Sun, 03 September 2006 at 7:57 PM

I do like Vue but i only have Vue5 Pro and it takes ages to render and for some odd reason my renders look crap on the best settings....  there also seams to be alot of adverts for Vue6....lol...

ohh and can someone give me more money for all these recommended software titles...lol

OHHHH i know...... When you change runtimes in the libraries for some reason Poser insists it has to look at everything WHY???? STOP IT...please fix this EF my content is massive and i dont want to wait 5mins because i have accidentally backed out too far and have to go back to my runtime folder....

is it me or am i the only one who has noticed this????

Realmling ( ) posted Sun, 03 September 2006 at 10:25 PM

You're not the only one....most annoying at times. Some of my runtimes are a bit larger than others, and it's really annoying for it to take forever when I'm switching back and forth because I change my mind a million times.

My wish is a very very trivial one compared to most.....I want to be able to get rid of that damn Downloads folder. I never use it, so why can't I remove it from the libraries menu? If they're not going to get rid it all together, then at least give the user the option to not have it in the list.

I haven't figured out enough stuff that Poser does to know what else to ask for... =P

The downloads folder can be deleted. At least on the Mac. I know mine is :)

Realmling ( ) posted Mon, 04 September 2006 at 12:18 AM

I tried to delete mine....Poser didn't like that much for whatever reason, and it didn't remove it from the libraries menu, so I had to make the stupid folder again.

Could just be me though, I have an odd effect on electronics....damn things never misbehave when my husband is in the room, but the minute he leaves it's like they're out to get me.

I don't bother with external runtimes, I have mine set up with multiple folders, I find it much easier!

I use poser 5 and have never made multiple runtimes though I do use the poser 4 one.

Fazzel, daz studio is much more powerful now than it was before because of plugins that have been made that enable ibl sss and ambient occlusion and there is a free plugin that can do all these things.

I must be one of the few people who like poser and daz studio.

I would like to see in poser 7 some of the simpler things fixed, like copying and pasting parameters and things like IK being able to be switched off automatically if poser had a better settings file things like IK off would be very easy to do and a lot of other small things could be set there also.

ZaxysDMI ( ) posted Wed, 06 September 2006 at 7:04 PM

I've got some basic wishes for a new version of Poser. Taking advantage of multiple processors and more than 2Gb of RAM for starters.

Then how about being able to open more than one document at a time or being able to leave a window rendering while you work on another file. Right now Poser is the biggest bottleneck in my workflow because when it is rendering you're not doing anything in Poser. All my jobs require at least 12 frames to rendered so this is a major drawback.

As quaint as the UI is, it is not at all efficient. I vote to can it. Keep the unique controls that work but  it's time for a overhaul.

I'm hoping the Poser import tools for Strata are released soon because with Strata I have all the wishes above plus distributed rendering.

Use fast user switching in windows and run a second poser on another account (you'll maybe need another license to do this legaly).

You can do this already:

Check out poser 6 tutorials at Runtimedna.com or my own faq at

It's called a probe light  and gather node in poser 6.

My Poser 7 wish is that it's under the Christmas tree this year.  Might not happen, but hey -- this is a 'wants' thread.

But by all means -- get P7 all tweaked & polished up prior to release.

Here's a few others, just for fun:

-- better library/runtime management tools
-- a faster, smoother, much less buggy renderer
-- greatly improved memory management
-- dynamic hair that doesn't kill your system resources
-- full integration of the DAZ Mil figures into the Face Room (hee, hee)
Edited to add: a Face Room that's actually worth attempting to use.

BTW - don't look at this list as a slam on Poser.  Taken as a whole, P6 is a fantastic application as it stands now.  I have no doubt that they'll only be making it better with P7.

Obvious stuff; Undo, preferably undo levels. Cut and paste. A little less obvious; Fix the legacy code that creates new names for instanced objects "on the fly." That one change -- using existing internal names -- would fix ALL cross-talk issues, including permitting "good" crosstalk (aka superconforming clothing) to work again. This is probably buried very deeply tho, back in version 2 code or even earlier, so it could be a real pain to get it out. More advanced; We talk about improving renders, and that's a good thing. But the name of the program is Poser. It's prime function is posing of figures. Where are the advances in that art? Is IK and forward kinematics really the best we can come up with? What happened to genetic algorithms, joint weighting, rag-doll physics, flocking behavior, AI animation, animation blending...?

Just making sure that if you hit the close button for poser and then cancel, it will indeed CANCEL the closing, that would be a nice feature. So far it just closes no matter what.
