THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: errm - challenge idea (but I'm not sure I should do it unless you want inspirati

I'm rather trepidatious about this, as you might have guessed from the thread title.

I just had an idea for a scene. As I thought about it, I realised I probably couldn't do it (although it would be fun to do if I had the time/energy to do it).

The idea was "The Feast".

It could be:

  • One of those "medeival" type feasts (with roast boar, quails eggs etc. in a stone hall).

  • A satire in the style of Hogarth's "Gluttony"..

  • A Church mouse finding a lerge bit of cheese..

  • A modern restaurant with business people celebrating their latest stock-exchange conquests..

  • Tiny Tim and his goose/turkey..

  • A cave-man and a haunch of Aurox

  • A religous idea (the "Last sSupper" comes to mind..

  • A Peasant feast in a meadow.or forest grove..

  • or anything else.... (with food, drink and possibly people/animals associated).. (even just the set-up w/o any characters would be possible...)

Poser pple would be accepted. A limited amount of postwork too. But as much as possible in Bryce...

Just a thought...

If anyone wants to try it, that's great.
If not, this thread will die a natural death.

If I can pluck up the courage I'll try to do something myself, but I'm more interested in inspiring people to "have a go"

Tentatively yours,

Cheers,
Diolma

I have a nice scene in mind, reading this. I'm just wondering how many years it would take me to complete it...  ;)
Maybe it could be a collaboration challenge... Each person models and textures one or more pieces for the scene?  I wonder how that would work out.

Little bit like those painting exercises done by two or more people where each person only hets to see about one inch of the adjoining work, and has to match the transition.  Hmmm....

wht an excellent idea! I got to think on several feasts.. A Danish novel describes one, then there is Brugels painting.. hmm... and then of course our Scandinavian Christmas feasts. lol you've got my vote.

I could nto find any referance to any illustration or painting of Hogarths gluttony. Soem are good soem seem like things I would not do. I work a lot more on my pics now and just making a quickies does not happen anymore often it takes many hours of work. So I really have to be inspired.

I could seriouly think about a scene celebrating the winter solstice....   with Pagan themes....

The idea of doing a co-operative might be easier/ fun....   one scene with two people working on it....  one models the other directs the senario....  both can render....

I think one can pass part of the render to another computer.....  anyway thats the least of it.....

something to think about...

Hmm..is that 'A Rake's Progress?'..I had a vision of the opposite; there used to be someone who made portraits using fish, vegetables, etc.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

With contests, everyone has differing abilities and also differing directions for their creativity.  Some like to create/modify models. This is a highly complex and demanding skill.  Other people like to create abstracts, while other Brycers like to assemble scenes using models made by others...  The skills in this latter category lie in the arrangement of elements, lighting and skies, and camera angles...

Perhaps the contests need to focus more on specific elements of these diverse skills...  How about a fairly low file size scene being downloadable and everyone have a go at the best lighting and sky arrangement they can come up with for it whilst leaving the scene elements and models and camera angle intact (every Brycer could have a crack at this)... Or a contest focussing on creating a model (limited to those who like to do this).

As well as the broader contests such as the feast idea, which would be fun to do and very very tinkering intensive to get right :-)

Just a thought.

"I could nto find any referance to any illustration or painting of Hogarths gluttony."

That's probably my fault, I didn't check properly. I know Hogarth did a pic showing a feast (with his usual panache and satire) and I thought it was called "gluttony", but I'm probably confusing the title with something by another artist.

The idea of a collaborative effort is an excellent one, but I can see problems arising with regard to consistency. Just getting it co-ordinated might take longer than anything except the final render..:-)

I'm beginning to think that my original idea was one of those "it seemed a good idea at the time" thoughts, instead of anything practical (in the short term).

Oh, well, never mind. I hope it got some of you inspired (that's always a nice feeling), and if anything ever  comes of it I'd love to see the result!

(Diolma <-- wanders of mumbling thoughts about his latest SOW composition...)

I had a crack at a scene a few weeks ago in a meadow with two cows seen from a bug's viewpoint, with lots of flowers and grasses and bugs and lizards and butterflys with mountains and clouds etc etc..  Was very very hard to see through the forest of wireframes to set the scene and the end result was not that good...  I learnt the lesson that overly complex scenes with many many elements are best done with separate files merged at the end, and that some ideas are best accomplished with a camera rather than a computer :-)

Sounds faintly feasible (for me that is) and would be a good opportunity to make some better cutlery than I managed last time.

Fruit and vegetables etc, would be harder to model.... But I'm thinking about it.

I'll be okay so long as there's no particular time limit on uploading (with me having difficulties up - or down - loading here at college.  I need a two week leeway for that)

Um, having still not managed my bat's face, I think I'll leave cows out of it.
