I need some urgent advice on a problem I'm having retexturing a tree. I downloaded the Large Forrest Tree from the vue Freebies, and decided thatI needed a darker and rougher looking bark texture for an image I'm working on. Unfortunately, when I retextured the bark..it left sections of it the old texture. Here's the tricky bit...to change the texture composition, I muck up the entire leaf texture as well.....does anyone know how to change just the bark and leave the leaves exactly the same? I have included the image without the leaf desacration to show u the weirdness of the existing transformation thus far. Any and all suggestions would be gratefully accepted. Thanks in advance ~Beck

You may need to consult with Obiwan (I think it was Obiwan who made that tree, right?) I haven't used it myself, and I don't know how it was built, but the effect you're getting may have some relation to how the item was made (perhaps more than one group for the trunk/branches?) -- my guess. Sorry it's not more helpful, but good luck! :) Varian

Did you change the tree bark only texture using the Material Browser? If I want to change one material in an object and leave the rest of the materials intact I always use the browser. The one thing you need to be careful of is this: When you select a material in the browser, it will select all the objects that use that particular material. What you need to do before changing it is de-select all the objects that you don't want to change that material and just leave the one that you do want to change. I've never encountered anything like this before so I'm thinking that you changed the material of the entire tree? Leaves and all? If you didn't then look in your material browser and select all your bark textures 1 by 1. Make a note if your large tree gets selected as you select the materials. Maybe the tree used more than 1 bark texture. Hope this helps Sacred! Laurie

Thanks for responding..... The tree itself is made up of the 4 main bark areas and then the walnut tree and the maple(?)...In this example I only changed the bark texture on the actual trunk. But as u can see the sections of the two other tree textures are intact. The section I need to change is the bark on the branches where the tree leaves are...and I don't know how to do that without corrupting the leaves. When I try and edit the walnut or the maple I get only the trunk showing...and a warning saying that it has mutiple texture..do I want to proceed.....but I can't seperate them...does this make any sense? I only want to change the bark on the branches...not the leaves themselves. the maple and the walnut are one object (each) how do I change just one component of these objects? ie...the bark only.

"...does anyone know how to change just the bark and leave the leaves exactly the same?..." You need to choose the bark material from the "Display Material Summary" panel rather than from the object material preview window. This will let you edit an individual material without disturbing other materials that are assigned to the same object. -SMT

The tree itself is made up of the 4 main bark areas and then the walnut tree and the maple(?) -- Sounds interesting! A very odd configuration indeed! The advice you're getting is right; you need to use the Material Summary to edit the individual textures. There should be a leaves material for the walnut and one for the maple, but they may both be sharing the same material, in which case only one material will display for both of those. For the bark, there would be the 4 groups you already know about, plus one for the walnut and one for the maple. Again, the walnut and maple might be sharing the same material, in which case there'd be just one showing in the Summary. Doh...all this guessing. I'll download the tree and take a look at it. :)

I think I know what you mean now Sacred! You want to change the bark on the thin branches touching the leaves. Unfortunately the only way to do that is to change the leaf texture map itself. There is no procedural bark texture going that far up on the tree branch. It is part of the texture map that the leaf is on. You will need to open your leaf texture up in a paint program and paint on darker bark. That is the only way :(. Sorry :( Laurie

Material Summary for the Forest Tree The second "Walnut Trunk" could be renamed to "Burl" as that's the only object that material applies to. The first "Walnut Trunk" applies to the entire rest of the trunk objects, and the "Walnut Leaf" applies to all the leaves.

I modified "Walnut Trunk" so the material would stand out. Then I replaced "Walnut Leaf" with "Winter Pear Branches" -- just to shoo the leaves out of the way for viewing.

Then I brought leaves back by replacing "Pear Tree Branches" with one of my own leaf materials. The "Walnut Trunk" is still modified for the brighter colors. Aside from the Burl object, the first "Walnut Trunk" in the Material Summary does extend fully to all the rest of the trunk materials.
