Subject: Macintosh Vue6 /Poser6 import problem

Gini ( ) posted Mon, 06 November 2006 at 5:21 AM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 1:39 PM

My head really hurts from banging it on my desk over this !! I had this problem with Vue 5Inf, and now with 6Inf... I just canNOT get it to recognise my Poser 6 application so I can import a pz3 . I'm on a Mac PB G4 1.67ghz, OS 10.4.8, 1g ram, a very recent entire system re-install, Poser 6.03, also a recent install. I have repaired permissions even though there was little to repair. Everything else is running beautifully. I have directed Vue to my Poser app. installation via Vue preferences ( it's not renamed and still in my Applications folder) restarted Vue as well as my laptop many many times. I got to file>import object >select poser object> select the desired pz3 (have tried pzz as well> hit 'open' and only the Basic Import object dialog box appears, NOT the Poser import options. If I hit import anyway Vue goes into beachball spin and according to the 'force quit ' option , which is all I can do at that point, vue "is not responding". So by the fact the actual Poser Import Options box never appears I feel safe in assuming Vue is just not recognising Poser at all. I have checked my Poser app via File>info , it's not locked, it's owned by 'system' and any can 'read and write'. Has any one come across this problem ? Since its happened with both Vue5 and now 6 with me it's obviously some weird glitch in my system but I am stumped as what to try next. Or am I just really dumb and doing something wrongly that is obvious to all other Vue/Poser users ?? I have contacted e-on tech support a number of weeks back when I was exasperated with this same issue when still using 5 but really got no answer that changed anything. If anyone has a suggestion I am all ears. At this point I will try voodoo, magic circles.......anything . Shouting at my computer sure didn't help and it ignored my tears too.

Inside your application folder you8 should have a folder called Poser 6 - and in there you have the application called "Poser 6.0 OS X".

What you describe sounds more like a free Poser app in the application folder. That would be not good - maybe the source of the problem.

What I have is like this wabe: HardDrive>Applications>Poser 6>Poser 6.0 OSX. That is always how its been from the original install, I haven't moved it around. That Poser 6.0 OSX is what I point Vue to. Thank you for answering . I see how my wording above sounds like that now it will change it to be clearer. Ooops, too late to edit now !

This is how it looks here - not system but me as user. Even when i doubt that this is the problerm here really.

Where have you installed Vue to? Default place?

Since I first posted this thread I also changed from 'system' in ownership/permissions to 'me' same as yours....... as you suspect makes no difference. Yes, Vue is in the default installed place of HD>Applications. When I was having this problem with Vue5 I installed Vue into my User Folder>Applications but it made no difference to the poser problem.

Gini, i have to think about that - no idea so far what it can be. Have you ever contacted technical support at e-on about it?

I did, a while back when it was not working with 5Inf. At that time I was having a problem getting them at Tech to see that I was actually browsing to the correct 'Poser 6.0 OS X' app in Vue prefs. We didn't get much farther than that. I have re-submitted the problem today to them now that it is still a problem with 6 too. I really appreciate you thinking on this for me .

Well it seems in this case Vue is recgonizing that you have Poser installed.  Otherwise, it would prompt you for the location of the Poser application as soone as you selected a pz3 file for import. Have you tried importing a very simple pz3?  Like a small file with just a prop in it.

Well, on the e-on forum someone just suggested that Vue is'nt really " Not Responding" as the Force Quit box suggests but that it can actually take up tp 1/2 an hour for the Poser Import dialogue box to appear after "Open" is clicked ! I'm not being patient enough. I've never heard times like that reported.... is that the kind of import time people are experiencing and are just keeping really quiet about ? I will try with a very small file like you suggest.... I tried a 2 meg one earlier but didn't wait longer than 5 minutes. I'll be back. Thanks

I read that as well in the registered user forum. And it indeed can be a possibility.

Youi definitely should try a very simple thing as a test first - to see wether it works. Best without any textures too, to come closer to the problem.

I as well on my old G4 had cases where it took more than ten minutes until anything happened. Even the Activity Monitor was saying that the program was not responding. Suddenly... So be patient, start an import anf have a dinner in between to see what happens after half an hour or so.
And if that imports, report the long time to technical support please. So that they can speed that up maybe.

I've got a pzz with only a hat, it weighing in at a tiny 104 kb, loading at the moment... 9 minutes so far and still the beachball spins ... ah hah !! The Poser Import option has finally appeared. I'll try one with a figure thats 2 meg or so again next and see how long that takes. I had no idea my lack of patience was the problem.... I'm usually such a saint . But, I'm sorry, ridiculous if things really can take up to 1/2 hour to import. I certainly will report to Tech Support.......... I consider those kind of waiting times a bug. My PowerBook is barely 2 years old... merely middle aged ; ) Won't be on a new one until Jan 08 I expect. Wabe, what are your specs now if not a G4 and what kind of times do you experience ? Same question to you dburdick. Anybody else care to say ? Why has everyone been so quiet if these are the usual times to wait ? Is it so on PCs too ? So my future holds lots of comping in PS or I suppose I could do billboard figures in Vue. At least objs import in a snap.

So a while later : Tried a 2 meg pz3, actually still only took a bit longer than the little one but Vue choked on it once it was in. Ran like molasses in slow mo ! it was 220, 000 polys. Got out of that and tried a 186 meg file with 3 people and lots of architecture.... came "flying " in at about 14 minutes. 750,000 polys. Was running sluggishly but just about moveable. Deleted the 3 people, saved the rest as a Vue obj and reimported it back in at 120, 000 polys. Am happily adding atmosphere ,water etc. Lol, not reflective of my working methods, just wanted to see what Vue could do with random Poser files. So it was all about lack of patience on my part though I am very curious as to why I have never up until now in any forums come across mention of the kind of import times people are experiencing. Someone at e-on forums said 1/2 hour, someone else here at Renderosity in the mac forum waits up to an hour. I really think the Vue manual, where it covers this on pages 30 -32 should mention this !!! Am I the only impatient one who consideres this less than ideal ? 15 minutes is ok in my book though ; ) On the very plus side Vue 6 is seeming much more stable than 5 was for me. 5Inf always crashed randomly and with all my messing about Vue 6Inf hasn't crashed once today . I had all but given up on Vue. 'Course I haven't tried any of the fancier stuff being posted about in the forums concerning 6 yet. But am a happy camper now that this hurdle has been cleared. Ta all for your imput, much appreciated ! -Gini

Gini,

There must be some kind of bug or system setting on your Mac which causes such a long import delay.  On my Mac Mini it takes on a few seconds to import a 10mb PZ3.  Are you running any antivirus or other apps in the background which could be causing this?

Gini ( ) posted Mon, 06 November 2006 at 2:00 PM

dburdick, no antivirus until a new one I finally installed late this afternoon. So I'm sure thats not been the problem. I haven't had anything else running at the same time as Vue.. This is a really fresh system install....... I was having problems getting Painter IX to run a few weeks back so did a total clean install. This long import delay was happening before the new install as well as after as far as 5 Inf was concerned. I did a new install of Poser at the same time though all the pz3s I tried today with the exception of the little hat one I made especially were from before that install. Hmmm, and some users wait even longer than me !

Dave, i had that as well - it should be reported as she describes it here from Gini. Mac Poser import always was a little slower in Vue history. I think it needs a "second" process that needs to be initialised first - the second import normally then is faster.

But congrats Gini - how does it feel to import Poser files into Vue?

It feels like a giant leap forward for gini-kind . Lol, actually I am feeling really pleased it worked , now I can concentrate on the bigger business of learning to use Vue for much more than mucking about and feeling cross about the Poser import thing. All this started because of a posed cow I wanted to import to recreate a painting I like. Isn't a cow why the great fire of SanFrancisco started too ? I have reported all this to E-On Tech too, the different file sizes i tried , the times etc.
