Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 28 11:20 am)
I've done a quick test just now and this is the result:
JAMES IN FRONT OF A CLOTH PLANE WITH A REFLECT NODE. FIREFLY RENDER. So I take James body and
Checked both VISIBLE and VISIBLE IN RAYTRACING
Result: James and a nice reflect of James
Checked VISIBLE and unchecked VISIBLE IN RAYTRACING
Result: James and a empty reflect (no James reflected)
Unchecked VISIBLE and checked VISIBLE IN RAYTRACING
Result: no James, no reflect of James
I suppose you're in search of the opposite of 2) : Nobody in scene and a figure appearing in the reflect, but... it looks like doesn't work
So... that's all, folks :)

No, they should not. Only things that are checked to be visible are passed to the renderer. The renderer then adds only those with "visible in raytracing" to the raytracing data - the rest will be visible directly, but invisible to any raytraced effects.
Just a thought.
Yes that looks ok but it's not useable in the specific situation though.
What I needed was a way to look through a wall but have the wall (which is part of a train compartment so it's a bit more than just a wall) show up in the reflection in the window.
But I guess that's not possible then. OK at least I can stop trying and see if I can find a camera angle that allows me to see without being obstructed.
Thanks for the help guys :o)

This might work for you in this case. Make the wall out of a one-sided square. Turn it around so the "front" is facing away from the camera. In the preview, the wall will disappear as you turn it. If you move your camera to the other side, you can continue seeing it while you position and size the wall.
Now go into your render options and enable "Remove backfacing polys". This makes the one-sided square truly one-sided!
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
I mean that I'm standing int he side corridor of a compartment-type train, looking into one of the compartments.
The wall I'm looking through has a door and window panes (so it's not just a flat wall) - but the thing is the non-window'y parts of the wall and door is in the way. But since the character's image is visible in the window (looking out of the train) and the main thing is that you can only see the face in the reflection, I need those windows to also reflect the compartment door and dividing wall. And I can't make that out of one sided planes. The idea is good, it's just not possible here.
Anyway I decided to remake the scene from another angle, so for now I've solved that problem. -Now if only Poser would actually RENDER it sigh

You might try different renders, and then layer them in Photoshop.

Oh well that's got nothing to do with invisible walls then. The problem is your camera is in an unreal location.
Put the camera inside the room.
Then either adjust your focal length down to get a wider angle shot, or raise (or lower? can't remember which works which way) the "Scale" dial on the camera this makes it include more of the scene without changing the focal length. That way you can keep a long focal length, as if you were outside, but you're actually inside.

Thanks, I always forget that you can scale cameras. I'm so used to the focal dial because I'm thinking in Real Camera terms.
As it is, the altered scene worked almost better than the one I originally planned, but I'll have to try scaling the camera and see if I could have done the first thing I had in mind, that way.

OK am I misunderstanding something here? (not unlikely)

Mmm... and I vaguely remember something about Smooth Polygons should be.. what? On or off for things to show in reflections...
Anyway, isn't this what Visible in Raytracing is for? Or am I once again expecting Poser (6 for some hours more...) to do something it can't do?
