Subject: How do you clearn the viewfinder on a Canon Rebel Xti?

vulcanccit ( ) posted Sun, 07 January 2007 at 12:45 PM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 9:49 AM

I see some spots and maybe some fuzz or hair in the view finder.  I shot some compressed air and that helped.  Not sure if I should clean it with lense cloth or a brush?

this is with no lens attached so I know its in the view finder somwhere.

Please advise.

A few points to consider;

  1. Compressed air anywhere near a digital camera is a NO NO!  If you are unlucky, some liquid may be expelled along with the "gas"....something you really don't want, especially near your sensor.
  2. One of the most common problems with using any type of blower (eg for sensor cleaning) is that the particles end up deeper within the cam....the viewfinder screen is a common location!
  3. Do not touch the screen or mirror assembly  with anything if at all possible...they are very delicate....the viewfinder screens are very prone to scratching.
  4. In your case...are you sure that the fuzz is on the viewfinder screen?.....it could be sitting on your mirror.....

If it is actually on the viewfinder screen...you really only have three options.....a)continue to blow, but use a "Giotto's" type blower...b) send the cam in to Canon for cleaning...c) Live with it, because it will not show in your images.

Just another thought...if it's an XTi....it's still under warranty.
Canon generally does the first cleaning for free....

You got some good advice above !

If you can see dust in the viewfinder it is most likely on the focussing screen. Live with it until the next service or get a Canon service center to clean it. Mirrors, focussing screens and prisms inside your camera are very easily damaged and any attempt by someone not experienced in cleaning these parts is likely to make matters far worse.

Canon do the first clean for free and using any other method other than that explained in the instruction manual for cleaning will invalidate your warranty.

Nothing much more to add than the excellent advice allready given .. You may be able to see any dirt  or hairs on the mirror which will show up on the viewfinder, but on the sensor not so easy... and you will need to look at the menu function on the camera to open access to the sensor by flipping back the mirror,  to allow the blower brush John recommended  to be used, make sure you never touch the sensor with it.. .  And for sure if you dont know what you are doing take it to a dealer... The best way is to have good practices and not change the lens in less than ideal situations if possible indoors.. Not out in  dusty conditions..

One way you may tell if dirt is on the sensor is by taking an image of a sky or sheet of white paper... if dark spots show up there in the same place it is on your sensor.. Hold the camera without the lens facing downwards and blow up so that any dust may fall out if you are lucky..

where is the censor?  I did flip the mirror back manually and brushed with one of those photo brushes... I did not do anythign with the menu.  also the mirror the I rotated back had another mirror or something behind it and it had a movable section like 2 halves that I opened and cleaned...I probably messed the entire thing up.  best I can tell the images are ok.

So far, everything you have done is wrong and everything you have done so far can, or already may have caused serious damage to your camera.

I am afraid to even tell you where the sensor is located.....

With everything you have already done....the slight bit of "fuzz" appearing on your viewfinder screen should be the least of your worries.

Sorry....but my suggestion to you is to have the camera looked at by the professionals at Canon......then when you get it back.....please, please never remove the lens!

yes all of this was before I asked this question.  I did find where the sensor is...and moving the mirror back does not affect the sensor.  You have to use a menu function that will hold the shutter open and the sensor is behind that.  so I believe the sensor is in fine shape.  Just this view finder pentaprism is dirty.  it does work fine.  So I will take it to a professional to see if they can clean or replace the viewfinder items.  I just took at 30 second out of focus picture of a white piece of paper and zoomed in as I viewed it with paintshop pro...it looks clean as a whistle..no spots or anything that I can tell.  SO lets hope I have not messed anything else up.

I do appreciate the warnings and advise, which I will...from now on...adhere to!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phew I am happy for you.... If you are lucky the mirror is all that needs to be cleaned, and lot less expensive than a scatch to the sensor..
