Subject: Hand scaling woes

I've got a custom character I've made from the Laura3, blYTGirl mesh. I want to scale the hands as they're too large, but these are the results using Morph Master 2.5. I've also tried swapping this morph from Victoria3 and Aiko3 which have a Scale hands morph using Morph Manager but that doesn't work either because of the different meshes. I get a similar problem with the feet. Both extremities look normal until posing. I've also tried manually scaling the hands and all the digit groups. They appear normal and the bones appear properly sized and located but when you attempt to pose, they pivot at the wrong spot...

Have you tried fiddling with the origins of the joints in Joint Editor?

Don't fiddle with the Joints!!  Go into the CR2 file and change the Scale channels to PropagatingScale channels on the lHand and rHand body parts.  This will make scaling of the hands 'propagate' to the children - fingers.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

I can't tell in the above image if the finger sections are not scaling right, or if there's a y-offset problem.

Okay, you need to find the CR2 file for Laura.  This is usually somewhere in your Runtime:Libraries:Character folder as "Laura 3.cr2".  A search of that folder should reveal its location.

Once you've found it, make a copy of the original file for editing.  You will need an editor capable of opening a very large text file, Cr2Editor, or Dimension3D's editor (here in the MP).  NotePad is really not recommended.

Once avaialble for editing, find the second instance of "actor rHand:1" and go to the "channels".  There are four sections in there called "scale", "scaleX", "scaleY", and "scaleZ".  You want to change these from:

scaleX xScale

to

propagatingScaleX xScale

and so on.

Find the second instance (or next after the rHand) of "actor lHand:1" and do the same.

Save the modified CR2 file.  You might also want to copy the RSR and/or PNG files from the original "Laura 3.cr2" and rename them so that you get a thumbnail in the Poser library.

Now when you scale the hands, the fingers will scale as well.

This all leads me to wondering why Poser doesn't have a simple way to do this - in the Parameters window for instance.  My plugin interPoser Pro for Cinema 4D has the ability for the user to switch between scaling and propagating scaling with a switch on each body part (and across the figure if desired).  Send your emails to EF pronto! ;)

That is a good trick, thanks for the info.  I like to scale fingers around as well but generally I get it done on a character and save the character that way, but if I need to do it again I'll try it that way.
