Subject: What is art?

DDevant ( ) posted Mon, 05 February 2007 at 3:12 PM · edited Sun, 24 November 2024 at 6:10 PM

I made an image in Poser. If anyone would like the PZ3 I will happily email to you, and I'm told because one admin does not understand the substance of my image that it is not art. The image was about cencorship this was illustrated by a large white panel rendered in Poser. Post work in Photoshop but apparently it's not art so can someone from RR please tell what is art?
Is this an art site or not?
I've sent a copy of the pz3 to RR
I never did receive any notification either by email or IM why this decision was taken. Can you please tell me why this image is not acceptable within the terms of the TOS?

Son, you really need to give this a rest.

DDevant ( ) posted Mon, 05 February 2007 at 3:21 PM

Do I? so you, as well,  believe the asking of questions should not be allowed?

"go back to rendering boobies" I like that one :)
How long is a piece of string"
Well you just measure the distance between the two end points and you will have your answer.
Good to see you are still active in the Forums Khai.
I've just carefully uploaded another image. I hope it will be classed as art Stacey and not deleted. The previous image represented the future for the subject of this one.
Thanks and take care all.

I've only ever seen 7

a blank canvas or blank image, if posted in an actual art gallery (in a physical building, on an actual wall in an actual room) would be referred to as "minimalist art". anything created by an human can be called "art", and it doesn't harm us in any way to refer to these things as such. unfortunately, the "minimalist school" is sometimes described as reactionary (or other negative terms), similar to the way "dadaism" was considered in an earlier era. hence, if one's only desire is to provoke a negative reaction from the typical viewer, minimalism is a good way to do it. yet in my perusal of the gallery here, the typical image poster is hoping for a positive reaction, e.g. congratulatory messages and praise, regardless of the relative merits of the image.

thundering1 ( ) posted Mon, 05 February 2007 at 4:44 PM

And do they talk to you regularly?

("When we talk to God, it's called prayer. When God talks to us, it's called schizophrenia.")

TerraDreamer is right - you've really gotta give this a rest - it's bordering on childish now, regardless of the esoteric and educated tone you try to embue (which comes across as corny, BTW). You're not asking questions - you're purposefully starting fights. Really adult...

DDevant, I think you're playing with fire, my friend. Forget it  ;)

Do they have "conference call" - I'd love to hear them, too!
At least "speakerphone", c'mon!

Granted, I know DDevant was just trying to cause trouble, but the response in a now locked thread seemed a little overboard. I mean, come on, it's a white panel. Is it going to be that much of a disruption to the very fabric and being of Renderosity? If suddenly the mods or admins decide they don't like modern art, does that mean they can pull those too?

I know, I know, this is their sandbox, if I don't like it I can go play in my own. Still, pulling the "image' was abit harsh.

I wen to his gallery, and there were only 2 images total - the one you're talking about was "pending" so I didn't know what it was until I read the description in that thread.

BOTH images were/are basically a middle-finger to Rosity. Maybe he had a more extensive gallery and pulled all the images after getting fed up - who knows? But the image that is UP is a guy who's had his left forearm cut/blown/ripped off in obviously hard times (war/disease/accident - who knows), and the title (if I remember right) is "Is It Art?" - now look at the subject/title of this thread - we're not stupid. He's using someone's real world tragedy and misery to merely spark an argument at an online art site - he can defend this all he wants with any kind of falsely deep and meaningful prose using carefully placed long words, but that's exactly how I read it.

About the white panel - if you read the posts, it sounds like this is what happened: His "blank canvas" white image that he claims was actually rendered in Poser was pulled by an admin because they thought it was a mistake.

They were about to notify him that an image wasn't uploaded (maybe a bad link, maybe something went wrong in the uploading process, maybe it was a corrupt file - nothing seemed to have been uploaded, or specifically, it wasn't an "image" that made it to the gallery) when he posted the thread to stir yet more controversy complaining (oh wait, I can see his hands slowly rising, palms forward, eyes softly widen, voice speaking slower with a higher pitched more childish tone - "Oh, but all I did was ask a question... Why aren't we allowed ask questions...?") that Rosity is now harshly determining "what is art" and we can only abide by their severely subjective rules of "what is art".

On his site is an active counter of what the war on Iraq costs - no "Hi - I'm so-and-so" and I'm here becasue I love expressing myself through art". He's an activist whos seems to have targeted Rosity as a cause - jump on the Iraq war - leave a bunch of mostly hobbyist artists who just wanna have some creative fun ALONE.

Rosity, being privately owned, can ban an image - or YOU or ME - simply because they were bored and pulled your name out of a hat. Reading the thread, I thought Stacey was being reeeeeeaaalllllyyy patient.

I agree with Kathym - I can't figure out why he hasn't been banned yet?

Cookienose ( ) posted Wed, 07 February 2007 at 7:27 AM

I didn't interpret the thread as saying that they pulled it because there was a possible error with the blank canvas.  Especially when StaceyG said " You didn't have an image. You had a blank white thumbnail and a blank white image. That isn't an "image"".  The museum in my hometown, has a very nicely framed piece of blank canvas sitting on the wall, next to the Grant Wood and Marvin Cone paintings, that somehow argues with that point of view.

To me, it sounded as though now if our pieces somehow don't fit the artistic view desired, they get pulled with no reason.  I've been around Renderosity for awhile now, and I guess I just don't see the way things have been going for awhile as a positive direction when it comes to the galleries.

I heartily agree that DDevant could have a much better way of expressing himself, but once in awhile a valid point can be made even if I disagree with the messenger and his style of presenting that message.

Khai ( ) posted Wed, 07 February 2007 at 7:30 AM

Cookienose, read back on the guys posts since the Thumbnails change. infact, all of his posts have been since then. Most of them have been asking a question, getting an answer, then repeating the question. over and over again. like a child repeating the question until they get a different answer. add in his attitude to anyone that dares to post that he's in the wrong..

Please bear in mind that the conversations between Stacey and DDevant that we have seen (publicly) also reference conversations that they have had via IM (privately) and we don't know what went down before the conversation we saw.

Never fear for your art... if they start judging images based on artistic merit, my gallery will be the first to go.

Good points. 😄 I had skimmed some of the other threads previously, got the impression he was not a native English speaker, so was willing to cut him some slack about posting the same question more than once. However, you are right; who knows what is going on behind the scenes?

thundering1 ( ) posted Wed, 07 February 2007 at 8:01 AM

That was AFTER he had apparently made some explaination of his image - reading posts beforehand told me that at first they thought it was a mistake - and why use space on the server for a mistake (that second part was just me posing a theory - but do you get it?)?

As CapnJack said - they were back and forth referring to PM/IM conversation.

It doesn't solve anything to take a debate from a private conversation to a forum thread b/c 2000 + members (minus the two involved of course) have no clue as to what is really going on. I could, however, understand if a MOD had said something to the effect of "I'll pull what images I want just because" - that perhaps that would be worth sharing.

But .. I have never known any of the MODs to be particularly nasty even when dealing with someone who was trying to stir the ole pot.

Just enjoying the Vue. :0)

At work, a manager will take you aside (if they are a respectable manager - this is what they're supposed to do) to tell you not to do something, or that there is a problem with your performance - there are corrections to be made, or to just plain chew you out. In private.

What you as a responsible worker are NOT supposed to do is walk right over to the water cooler at the busiest time and shout (so that everyone can hear) about what was just exchanged between you and said manager.

You just might get fired...
