Subject: HELP - MY SKYSCRAPERS ARE SCREWY!!!

I have a little bit of a problem making MATS for my sKyscrapers in Bryce 5.0, here's the thing -

I recently downloaded a bunch of images of building fronts / facades to make skyscraper mats for my city scenes. When making the mats - I noticed a very bad OOPS.

Case in point - view the attatched comparitive image. I made the texture on the left cylindrical - and it works great...For cylinders.
I tried the same approach for sqaure / rectangular high rise structures and it looked crappy - so I set the mat for "parametric , or "parametric scaled" - which are the two best effects for texture map wrapping in this version of Bryce that I could find.

LO AND BEHOLD - in BOTH cases - I end up with buildings whose sides look outstanding - BUT - whose roofs are, well, covered with WINDOWS (building on the right in the image)!

Now some might like this effect - and granted - now and then - on a building every great once in a while - it looks kinda cool, but for a whole city, this kinda thing would really crap it up a lot.

What would be a good way to change my settings to avoid this if at all possible?

You might try messing with the SCALE and OFFSET settings.

The same box that lets you change from say Parametric to Parametric Scaled has a little button that drops down another menu with adjusters on it. These are for: Scale - Rotate - Offset

Bryster I could not find this option in the MAT LAB (B5.0).

You could also put a square or a circle primitive on top of the building with a completely different texture, that's probably simpler than playing with the scale--parametric and parametric scaled are supposed to project the texture onto every side, so the scaling/rotating etc. may not fix it.  If you use a new object and group them together you can get a completely different texture for the top easily.

If the size, scale, and rotate don't work, you can put another cube on top that matches the texture of the concrete part of your MAT.   You can then put some mechanical stuff on top. 

Let us know if you find a good fix. :)

one more lash at the dead dog..... 

You an make the rectangle out of 2D surfaces and have control over the texture on each panel...  you can then apply different window textures to different sides of the building.. One side could be all bricks.. like some real building have...

okay leave the poor dog alone will ya!

  I seem to recall having downloaded or reading a tutorial some where about Texture mapping Buildings and there is a way to do it in the DTE so that you dont have that problem. Will see what I can dig up.

It's NOT rubbish - I like it!

One of the other problems I've been having is getting the windows / sides of my buildings to be more reflective (glass buildings) where the skyscraper has a lot of glass windows that should reflect sunlight. Bryster - I don't know if it's the texture you used or if it's a Bryce adjustment but you seem to have done a nice job here capturing that effect!

By the way - thanks for the tutorial link - I snagged it. I've also downloaded Original Moron's new updated ship models for "sky traffic" for my scenes as well. He does some terrific stuff, and his models are real goodies!

On the same main Mat Editor panal you will see a list of controls........ambience, specular etc.
Look down the bottom and you'll one called 'REFLECTION'.....guess what it does......;-)

The texture is just a cheap and nasty pic of office window sections.

The best way (imo)....is to just take a obj cube into the (free) UVMapper Classic, create a "New UV Map>Box"

You can have total control how the image texture is aplpied to the cube, and you can acurately create a map to make (just) your windows reflective.

I believe buried deep within the recesses of all of my freeware compilation disks (that I have been archiving since 2002), I have several incarnations of UV MAPPER.
I never quite got the hang of using it to any practical degree - HOWEVER - it mifght be worth it to me to download the last V and give a shot at walking down memory lane a few more times.

What I don't get is how to get a texture map with multiple pieces to translate in BRYCE - although I do recall older tutorials on getting Poser textures to work in bryce, so that might be very related to what we're talking about. I've found the simpler tools in Bryce served my needs amicably so I found myself inquiring about advanced techniques only on the rare occasions when I really wanted to learn to do something for a special effect that was unusual and could not generally be done through "cookie cutter" plain Jane default functions.

I still could not UVmap my own behind,,, much less an object and put it to work.....  UVmapper is not an easy learning curve program..  but then I've been brain dead since 1971.....

The textures on the buildings in the background of:

have reflections in the winows; here, they're reflecting the light sky behind the camera-they used to reflect the Statue of Liberty in an earlier version when it was in front of them.  I think they're just standard Bryce mats from the "Architecture" pre-set material category.

My Software - Poser Pro 2012, Photoshop, Bryce 6 and Borderlands......"Catch a  r--i---d-----e-----!"
