Subject: two pleas

1 - Could we get a couple new subcategories in the MISC free stuff? Could use one for "OBJ" and one for "3DS"; already have ones for DXF and POV, but the "Misc" of MISC is going to be real messy if we need to post all other formats there. 2 - When searching the new "ALL" in the free stuff, could there be added a notation showing which free stuff section an item is posted in? If it's a closeup of a Poser model, one can probably guess it's from the Poser free stuff, but there are a bunch of items that don't give a clue what they're associated with or what sort of files might be involved. The art galleries have a notation showing which gallery an image is from, so hopefully it's not something too difficult to implement for the free stuff, too? And thanks for doing such a great job, all around this place. :)

1 - I added an "OBJ" section to the "Misc" section of Free Stuff. Any "3DS" files should be uploaded to the existing 3D Studio Free Stuff area. 2 - I added the top section names (Poser, Vue, ...) when viewing the "All" top section. Russell

Cool beans Russ... thanks 8 ) was tripping though and went what's this? came in here and spotted your reply now.. about an ignore button for the chat room? or at the very least a clear buffer? smiles in an attempt to look sweet failing miserably

Much appreciated, thanks! :) One question on this part: Any "3DS" files should be uploaded to the existing 3D Studio Free Stuff area. I would assume the 3D Studio Max section is for 3D Studio Max items, not simply objects using *.3DS format. I usually make items in 3DS format whenever possible to keep file sizes smaller, and they don't come out of the Max program because I haven't built a model in Max yet. I'm not sure how others think, but I'd feel weird if I uploaded objects made in Organica, Poser or Ray Dream into the Max area. Uploading there would be like saying I made them in Max or for Max. Make sense? :)

Sorta kinda... if it's for poser etc.. maybe in the props section for uploading? there's a number of .3ds files in there... ye ole "import to whatever ye have" thing. hrmmmm,.... miscellanious props.. I guess as long as you stated the format up front... 8 ) good ideas Thank ye

Sounds right to me Wizzard.

Since I don't upload. (I'm a lousy artist) I'd have to say that it really doesn't matter. I usually do a search for a particular item I need. I've been know to spend a day or more searching through both the free and marketplace areas for items I need for my games. I've gotten 3ds out of props, poseable props, bryce, and even 3ds! Most of the time an item is in the wrong place, has the wrong name, or is so unrelated to the ID the artist gave it, that it's amazing half of the stuff gets downloaded at all! For example I want a gun, not an uzi, not a hand laser, not a revolver, not a pistol, not an AR-15, a gun! If you do a search for a "gun" none of these items would show up in a search. Not even if you do a search for a "weapon." You have to know it there, exactly what it's called, or the artist. Two or three generic terms of items would be helpful, if everybody would do it. I just did an artist by artist, page by page, tour of the marketplace. I found a Minotaur, a Zombie, and a Lizard man/woman, that don't show up in a search of "monsters." It's like I said, I'm not an artist, I'm the end-user. There are lots of item people would buy or DL if they knew they were there. Make searches easier! Who cares about the categories? I want this or that item! And THAT is why we have a search function. Next time you post think about it.

"Make searches easier! Who cares about the categories? I want this or that item! And THAT is why we have a search function." You can search across all categories and subcategories already. Just select "All" from the drop down, and then Search.

warzog ( ) posted Tue, 08 May 2001 at 11:09 PM

Yeh, if you know what the artist named it. And that's why I said, "Who cares about the categories?" When you're searching the categories mean squat! So who cares where they are? Generic names would make finding things easier. That is why people upload? So people can find their work? If you want it found, make it easier for a search to find it. Do like the porno sites used to do, include every possible search word, then every search would bring up your item. Hiding an item in a "category" may not be the category someone may think it would be in. Is a gun a prop? A poseable prop? A 3ds item? An obj? Third party? Depends on how the artist was feeling that day!

Warzog, I understand what you mean as I've run into the same problem myself along the way. Because of that, when I upload, I try to include pertinent details about the file itself, like format and file size. There is a section on the upload form for "comments". I used to write a bunch of details there, but the "comments" don't display, so now I just use that space for adding search terms. It is hard sometimes to imagine what terms a person might be searching for, however.

warzog ( ) posted Wed, 09 May 2001 at 1:09 AM

I agree, but if you put as many as you can think of, the odds are much better that people will think of one of them. As in my "gun" example; revolver, 45, peacemaker, colt, weapon, 19th century, old west, gun, cowboys, etc. All describe the Colt .45 Peacemaker, and would broaden the search more than say, "My Toy," or "Warzog's Bang-Bang!" Which is the type of listings we get now.

Varian ( ) posted Wed, 09 May 2001 at 1:31 AM

Now that we've talked about it here, perhaps uploaders will give the details some more consideration the next time they post an item. I think it would be even more useful now that the search goes across all the categories. Thanks to Russell quick work (above), we can at least see which main category an item comes from when browsing. :)

Keep your fingers crossed! And thanks for the concern.

I 2nd and 3rd the vote for an ignore button for the chat room. Also a "bump idjit from chatroom" button for the moderators. ;]
