Subject: Vue6 and obj import

Hdrider ( ) posted Tue, 27 February 2007 at 11:58 AM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 10:38 AM

Hello,
I'm using Vue6 pre-release and when I try to import obj files, some will load and others won't (crashing to desktop). Does anyone know if there is some specific obj format it is looking for or what?

I have been converting the problem obj files to 3ds and they load fine but this is a pain in the buttocks to do for every one.

I advise you to use PoseRay mysite.verizon.net/sfg0000/ in order to fix OBJs. Just load your OBJ with PoseRay and save it with another name. PoseRay reads anything even remotely similar to OBJs (if you rename PP2s with internal geometries, PoseRay manages to read 'em!) and saves squeaky clean OBJs.

As an example, OBJ exported from AC3D have problems within DazStudio; if I go thru this procedure they are rendered perfectly.

Clean, rinse and repeat....

In the Install it says you need POV Ray...might have been helpful if you had included that little nugget of information.. ...

If you have not POVRay installed PoseRay complains about this with warnings but it is anyway completely operational; I customarily use it on computers where POV has never been installed.

I thought it could be a helpful link, given the fact that PoseRay is well known in the GC community for this OBJ-fixing capability... next time I will keep my knowledge for myself.

Hello,
Your suggestion  worked. Povray did the trick but it's too bad we have got to go through these acrobatics. Suppose this is just one of the small details that gets overlooked.

I can hardly wait for the final release of Vue6 Esprit. Should be quite an adventure (sarcasm).

**Aw come on Alex, I was only bringing it up, whilst still at the PoseRay page. I had no idea it would work without it and was dl ing POVRAY at the time. I do apologise if I offended you in any way with  my semi-curt response to your most generous suggestion. Maybe the colour I used in my response gave the impression of anger, sorry 'bout that. I am not a Vue-er, by the way, I need this for the new TG2 as it also reads .obj and this utility does the job admirably, plus I now have POVray installed...more to learn there, so thanks very much for your input. Here's a little car I tried out in TG2TP [terragen 2 for those who don't know], and the only shaders missing are when TG2 runs out of shader channels. It's currently limited to 16 and there were 18 on this model, the windows being the missing ones.. ...**

Sounds like the same problem as I had with Vue 6 Infinite or at least a very similar one.  I sent the file into e-on for them to look at.  In my case it turned out that the object I was trying to import contained some bad mapping data that crashed vue's importer.  E-on fixed the problem I was running into in the V6I final release. The object imports and don't crash Vue.  If it is the same problem hopefully you'll find it fixed in the next release of Vue 6 and you'll be able to import objects without any problems.

In case it's not the same issue though you may want to report it to e-on's tech support and supply the models that cause the crash if they ask for them too.

Remaping the figure in UV mapper, loading and saving it from Cinema 4d or various other modellers fixed the bad data and allowed it to be read by Vue.  I tried the bad model in several other packages and in each case it either crashed them or the UV map was way off so the issue really sat with bad UV mapping data from the modelling package.  All of the ones that would load it displayed the bad mapping the same (skewed by 45 degrees from where it should have been).

It is my fault. I am in a horrible phase of my life and I overreact to everything...

BTW, I read that also UVMapper is able to perform the cleaning job. A well known cause of trouble among applications are silent limits on the number of vertices per face: the OBJ format theoretically can handle un unlimited amount of vertices per face, but actual applications can create troubles starting from 5 (and sometime less) vertices...
