Subject: remapping a poser figure?

I searched this forum using keyword "uvmap" - 1 result. search using "poser" yielded several results, one of which indicated blender may not be ideal for remapping poser figures. I downloaded blender (OS X) and tried to import "P4NudeWom.obj" to remap it to pseudo-cylindrical mode, similar to daz v3/v4. however, I could never see "P4NudeWom.obj" anywhere in blender, so I assume it's not an intuitive app, like UVMapper, cheetah3D, poser or carrara, where import of a wavefront obj would immediately cause it to appear in the main window. I noticed there are several tutorials and other references available, which I assume I must read prior to being able to use blender. it was a bit of a shock, though. this is the first time in 10 years that I've used a 3D app that didn't seem to work immediately, "out of the box". is there a tutorial somewhere that could be used for importing and remapping a poser obj file? if so, what is the link or source for that tutorial?

I'd never tried before, but I just tried importing a couple of the default poser 5 figures into blender and none of them imported.  DAZ figures import just fine, though.  Do you have another poser figure to import, just to test?

For the record, though, Blender is pretty unusual in a lot of ways.  I highly recommend reading some of the tutorials on the interface, e.g. how to move around, create windows, etc., and then looking into the UV mapping tutorials.

Does anyone else know any tutorials for the current version of blender's UV mapper?  It's changed a bit since all the tutorials I know of were written.

The figures should be importing fine.  Poser uses an almost microscopic scale compared to other 3d apps.  Switch to the Outliner screen after import to see if anything imported.  If it did select it in Outline, switch back to 3D screen and press the "." to zoom in.  DAZ Studio has better import/export scale options.

Miss Nancy is right about the p4 nude woman; if you try to import the .obj file that comes with Poser in the geometries folder (not an export out of poser) she really doesn't get imported--zooming in won't work, she's not in the outliner at all.  I expect that if you export it from poser first it would work, but for remapping it's probably easier to use the original obj file.

yeah, i assumed the obj file would appear in some hierarchy list, or the list of items in the main window - the one with the light and the cube. but there was no listing of any kind, indicating it didn't import. anyway, it rendered the cube real fast. i think it is definitely an useful app. the question will be - how to do certain object files. I know that in old apps, e.g. poser 4, amorphium, ray dream - the obj file hadda be "conditioned" to work in those, in regard to Mac OS 9. if it's possible, and the poser obj file has less than 16 material zones, I'm hoping there's some UVMapping room in blender that has got a function to allow user to split the object along a seam of choice, with unwrapping of the U and V co-ordinates. the next things to try are what halo said, then exporting it outta carrara, then exporting it outta cheetah3d, then my obj conversion script (OS 9 only). it also doesn't open in carrara, excepting as "facet meshes", which is carrara jargon for a non-editable vertex object group.

My Blender imports any Poser figure without any problem (including p4 womans). The imported figure needs to be rescaled after import (press S to rescale it).

That would be a good tutorial project, unwrapping a human figure in Blender. If you could show me an example prefered layout for the map, I could write one for us. Like, where do artists prefer the seams to be? Inbetween the fingers? Back of the head or divide the head in half? Divide the body in half or unwrap it with one seam in back? Seperate the limbs or leave them attatched? ect...

Blender's unwrapping tools are very advanced compared to UVmapper (my opinion only, no offence intended).

It is odd that the obj is not loading for you. I have not yet found one that could not load into Blender. If it is legal, I would be happy to take a look at the .obj for you and get it into Blender, and supply you with the .blend. The obj specifications state that objects must be seperated by an 'o' and groups by a 'g'. Im sure all the data is in the file it might just have to be edited a little if it does not meet the obj specification requirements.

o.k., I got it to import (OS X) - it seems like it's similar to carrara in that it wants a mtl file to accompany the obj file, and it imported the file exported from poser, whereas it didn't import the file from the poser geometries folder. I'd like to use UVMapper meself, but there's no pro version for OS X. the free OS X version is good, but partially non-functional and basically the same as the free windows version from 1998 or 1999. as mentioned by criss et al., it's tiny upon import. next step is to open the figure in the UVmapping room, which I didn't immediately see in any of the menus. I also couldn't find the figure in any list, nor could I select it, but at least now I can see it, so I know it's in there. I reckon if I can find a way to select it, the next step will be to scale it up. definitely gotta read the manual. the goal here is to remap the figure to the "bear-skin" pseudo-cylindrical method used in the daz V3/4 models. whereas the poser 4 female model is flat-mapped (planar) with seams along each side of the body (where texture stretching occurs), the daz models are split along seams at the back of the torso, arms and legs, which eliminates stretching and puts the seam where it's not often seen. this would mean that if blender has got an UV function in which the user can specify a seam from which the co-ordinates are unwrapped, it would be ideal for said purpose.
