Subject: OT: anyone ever deal with this company?

Faery_Light ( ) posted Sun, 01 April 2007 at 10:53 PM · edited Fri, 07 February 2025 at 10:04 AM

Has anyone ever dealt with Tiger direct for computers or computer parts? If so, how good are they? I'm thinking of purchasing a barebones kit instead of replacing the mobo/cpu on my son's computer. Their prices are, I think, reasonable and I'd like to get one ordered soon. Any help is appreciated.

I ordered a hard drive for my laptop from them not to long ago.  No problems so far.  Came as expected..

I do business with them and Newegg.com.  Both are pretty great.  Newegg.com return policy and direct discounts (none or nearly no rebate forms to deal with) but price wise in many instances they are neck to neck.  I got my new 22" flat screen Viewsonic from TDirect and Newegg didn't even have this particular model and the one closest to what I was looking for was about $50.00 more.  So what I would do is do some comparison shopping between the two stores! 😄

Thank you both for the prompt replies. RAMWolf, thanks for the link as well. I'll check them out too.

I have heard they are ok. Also, I have used www.zipzoomfly.com with good results.

Tiger Direct is good for individual parts like RAM, but I had bad luck with a kit computer
I got from them.  The motherboard didn't fit the case properly, and the  whole thing
didn't run when it was finished.

Thanks for the link.  WOW!   TigerDirect got about half the rating as Newegg.com.

I'm floored.  I thought TDirect's service, price and delivery time for this monitor was just super.  Then again my friend built his first computer, well I actually built most of it, and he ordered a ecs or esc MB from them and it was just a mess.  I wasted over a day troubleshooting only to figure out, with the help of another geek friend that works at Fry's, that it was indeed the MB.  So Fred's going to try to work out something with TDirect considering they only replace the mb with another one, no money back type of thing.  So there's a bad bit of business for Fred but my experience was fine... so far I should say......

To be safe I'd go with Newegg at this point and maybe use TDirect to do a little comparison shopping.  If you decide to go with TDirect then make sure you really read up on things like return policies and all that before proceeding.

Good luck and happy shopping! 😄

Tigerdirect gives me the willies.  I prefer Newegg, they just seem to have a more above-board pricing and ordering scheme.

Thanks for that link!  One more place for me to post my experience with Dell!!!  My review should be up there within 48 hours. They only allow 5000 words so I had to edit out some stuff :(  But at least the message is out there :)

I've purchased through TigerDirect in the past with no problems, but I highly recommend reserching all your components before you buy. personally I prefer ZipZoomFly or NewEgg.

interesting

I must lead a charmed life!

no problems with Poser 6 / 7, ordered 2 machines from Dell - both perfect and running smooth as silk..

...and now I've ordered 2 Hardrives and a Viewport USB Monitor Adaptor from tigerDirect.. and got what I paid for, working A-OK...

I use resellersratings on as many companies I don't know about as I can or resellers lists. I am a die hard Newegg customer. I used to deal with zipzoomfly before they changed their name it used to be google gear. I didn't have any problems with them then but when they changed names everything I ordered from them died.

I was told to stay away from Tiger Direct by some techie friends of mine. Actually the place where I had my present new machine spec'd out and built is sitting with a perfect 10 rating and that's KC Computer. The man's name is Kevin and he's an awesome guy and really works with you as far as selecting what you need and want. He doesn't try to ram things down your throat.

I'm glad the site was helpful!

I've bought from these places in the UK recently and found...

PC World - online prices OKish. In store average high street - staff friendly but very often untrained.

Woolworths - Argos & Tesco - prices are OK, staff really nice and helpfull and openly honest they have no technical skills. Very quick and happy to refund if theres any problems.

Dell is OK - bit more expensive particulary RAM upgrades - but they've often helped with problems outside the waranty.

Misco is a good choice -  nice and cheap, 3 day delivery is a fiver but they often deliver next day and don't debit your card until dispatch. Good customer service, and they also take Paypal.

Pixmana - very good prices if you can accept really bad customer services Part of the group that owns Dixons and PC world so not surprising.

Novatech.co.uk - a local box shifter - very good prices - support very knowledgable but not keen on accepting returns unless they have too.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

I was happy with Tiger Direct until I got burned for a lousy $70.00 rebate and had to jump through endless hoops trying to establish proof of my valid claim. I finally gave up, but made a mental note to myself that I would always relay how I was screwed with this transaction any time the opportunity presented itself. It just did.

I used tiger direct several times in the past, with no problems. Happy with pricing, and I got exactly what I ordered, in the time promised. Never had to deal with returns.
Same with CDW.com

I thought they did software. At one time half our sales staff jumped ship (this was back in the 90s) to work for them. I just use the local yokels, because I know where to find them if things go wrong..;) (place called Intrex, but they're only in NC..;)

A really good store for older, hard to find stuff is surpluscomputers.com. They just closed their retail store in San Francisco, but you can get older sound cards and so on brand new. I picked up an old IBM 486 at the Goodwill just to tinker with (that sucker was almost $4,000 new) for five dollars, and bought the old Soundblaster card for it for $10 from them. They still have their online store.

As far as a barebones kit, PCs are so cheap now, that you can pick up one at BestBuy stripped down and just soup it up as you get the cash. Just as long as it has room in the tower for expansion. My current PC is almost three years old, but its as fast - I believe - as any of the dual processors. It is a Gateway 3.4 gig P4 Extreme and came with a gig of RAM. I added another gig from Zipzoomfly who was the cheapest at the time, added two more serial hard drives (there were three open bays) and a USB card for more USB 2 connections. I can still swap out the graphics card which is PCI express Radeon 128. It runs the latest DOOM etc with no flicker. I am very happy with this PC's upgradability. It came with a CD-ROM drive and a DVD burner and card readers as well as firewire and USB. The original 120 gig hard drive has long since been replaced and I have a terrabyte in the three drives. Do not buy a small tower if you want to upgrade. Good luck.

Well after trying each of the places listed here, I didn't find a replacement MB. So I did another search and found one on EBay (shudder, hope it gets here) at a reasonable price. Now I'll most likely have to buy a cpu to replace the one on the dead MB...sigh. After this mess, I'm going to start saving and invest in a Mac. Thanks for all the help. BTW: Pugetsystems.com has the best deals on parts and highest rating.
