Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 27 2:10 pm)
What I do is keep all my clothing and hair with the base figures, so ill have something liek this
Character
!Daz Victoria 4 ->> base figure is in this folder
V4 Clothing --> all my clothign is in here
V4 Hair --> all my hair in in here
Pose
!Daz Victoria 4 -->
V4 Mats --> any mat files for textures
V4 Clothing MATS ---> Clothing Mats
V4 Inj ---> All those injections for the diferent morphs etc
V4 Hair Mats ---> Hair MAtS
I think you get the point, you can move your CR's PPs and MT5's around without too much problem as long as any file associated with it is kept wher eit belongs, so anything in the original folder needs to be moved as well.
DO NOT MOVE any of your Geometries folder and texture folder as they are probally linked to other files , You can mocve them but poser will need to locate them

I've tried a dozen different ways to organize and still had trouble finding stuff. It wasn't until I used " P3dO" by Seno Soft that I finally began to find things again.
My brain is just a toy box filled with weird things
Thanks for the suggestions!
I like the idea of sub folders. So I go to ...
C:Program Filese frontierPoser 7RuntimeLibrariesCharacterDAZ People
... and within "DAZ People" I can create separate sub folders for each DAZ character??? Is that right? I can create a "David" folder within the "DAZ People" folder and drop all my David files into it?
Or, what about the fact that my Character folder contains the ClassicCasual S3 & ClassicCasual V4 folders - can I move these two folders to the "Props" folder without screwing everything up?
Can I rename folders within the Library folder?
I just don't want to create any broken links, you know?
Well... Right now, my runtimes are in complete disarray, so I shouldn't pipe up here, but I won't let that stop me. So take this as lessons learned the hard way (and I haven't graduated yet).
I think before you begin organizing you should evaluate the types of work you tend towards, your work style, volume of products and accessibility.
One of the things that always frustrated me, is that while the multiple runtime iidea is good in essence, it was proving problematic with just about every conversion type utility I use. It's all very well to put all of V3 things in a V3 runtime, but when you want to use Sydney with V3 clothing, but use A3 hair you're still ending up spending a lot of time switching runtimes. Also, you end up with quite a bit of duplication if clothing shares texture maps across runtimes.
If you're on a Windows PC platform, the best advice I can offer is not to underestimate the power of the shortcut. For instance, I keep all my hair and texture maps in the largest runtime, because most of the content is "communal". I drop all of the mat files for hair textures, fits and poses in one subfolder of my pose library file on that runtime. The subfolder is divided by vendor, and then the particular hair. Then I drop a shortcut to that folder in all of my other people oriented runtimes Pose folder. I drop a shortcut to the entire hair folder (in the largest communal runtime) into my smaller people-oriented runtimes.
I repeat this process with all light files, pose files, expression files, hand pose files and materials files -- though I keep these in the main Poser Runtime. Why? Because some of these items are python dependent and python files, as far as I know, have to be located in the runtime with the executable.
My runtimes span multiple drives, it can take two to three minutes to change runtimes, but with a shortcut folder, I can't even tell I'm switching to content in another runtime, let alone on another drive.
Ok Leave your main library folders as is!
Create sub folders inside your main folders for example:
Props Folder [sub folder buildings]
Props folder [sub folder clothing]
Props folder [sub folder Weapons]
Do this with all your main folders.
Each sub folder can then be sub foldered again for example: Props/clothing/V4 clothing
or Props/clothing [same as above] /V3 clothing, I hope you get it, I'm not good at explaining!!
As another example your weapons folder could be sub foldered again for hand guns or swords.
Navigation is dead easy if you use the little black arrow at the top right!
Hope that gives you some idea.
Incidentally I didn't divide my DAZ peeps folder, it's set up like this: Character/people [sub] /DAZ people [sub] and that's it, all my DAZ peeps are in that folder, V2, V3, V4, A3, M3, H3 etc. etc.
Injustice will be avenged.

Quote - OK, it didn't work for me to move the ClassicCasual S3 & ClassicCasual V4 folders out of the Character folder and into the Props folder. The folder itself shows up under Props within Poser7, but there's no clothing.
Why???
Character folders recognize CR2 files, Prop folders recognize PP2 files. I think what was meant by recommending subfolders is that within your characters folder you have a folder for V4. Maybe you put the V4 figure there. Then in that folder, you create another folder called V4 Clothes - Contemporary (for instance), then load all of your contemporary V4 clothing into that subfolder. You can even keep the individual outfits in there own sub folder. It would look something like this...
|->Characters
|-> V4
|-> V4 Contemporary Clothes
|-> V4 Business Suit
Some things can be moved across category, but you have to change the extension to match their new category. For instance some hair comes as a Prop, (pp2) but sometimes, you can move it to your hair folder. But you have to change the extension to hr2 in order for Poser to recognize it.
You just can't move a Character folder into a Prop folder. Characters have to stay in Character folder, Props in Prop folder, ...
But you easily can divide in subfolder into the proper Main folder.
My DAZ people are divided as you said:
RuntimeLibrariesCharacterHumansDAZV3...
RuntimeLibrariesCharacterHumansDAZA3...
For the Prop, just the same:
RuntimeLibrariesPropsHumansDAZV3...
Inside my library, i have Humans folder, Animals folder, Creatures folder...
Inside Humans folder i have DAZ folder, Poser6 folder, Robots folder, Toons folder,...
Each A3 props are under LibrariesPropsHumansDAZA3Cloths (for instance) or Hair...
As long as you will try different organizations, there is no universal rules. The very important thing is that you find a proper way to easily find all your stuff.

To have one runtime with subfolders all you have to do is create whatever subfolders you want inside the default library folders.
For example if you want to separate V3 clothing from M3 clothing you would go to the character and pose and props folders and create subfolders called "V3 Clothing" or "M3 Clothing" and from there create further subfolders inside those by the name of the outfit. So for example you might have a path like this:
Poser6/runtime/libraries/character/V3 Clothing/Morphing Fantasy Dress
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/V3 Clothing/Morphing Fantasy Dress
You can create yet another layer of subfolders inside those to have something like this:
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/V3 Clothing/Morphing Fantasy Dress/Jane Smith Textures (where Jane Smith is a merchant and her MFD Textures are inside the folder)
I tend to keep all textures inside a subfolder for the outfit they are for. So all of my MFD textures are inside my MFD folder inside my Pose folder. This makes finding my textures very easy because everything for that dress that I have installed is located in one spot and because I use subfolders to separate each of the textures I can still tell who created them.
Once you have finished setting up your subfolders you could have something like the following:
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/V3 Clothing/Morphing Fantasy Dress
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/V3 Clothing/subfolder
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/V3 Clothing/subfolder
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/M3 Clothing/subfolder
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/Aiko/subfolder to break content into clothing, shoes, poses etc
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/poses/subfolder to break them into theme or by figure
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/plants/subfolder
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/props/subfolder to break up by theme or item
Poser6/runtime/libraries/poses/weapons
etc. etc. etc.
Do the same inside any of the library folders with the exception of the morph folders.
I used to do this before I got the hang of multiple runtimes and I liked it well enough but it wasn't as organized as I like, plus one large runtime is hard to backup not to mention that it takes Poser longer to open if you have a huge runtime connected to it.
From a post I made some months back on how I use Multiple Runtimes:
http://forum.daz3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=9060
I used to lose things all of the time and became so frustrated that I gave up on Poser a number of times and uninstalled it.
I tried a number of ways to sort my content, and finally settled on Multiple Runtimes.
I currently have about 40 runtime folders and know exactly what I have installed and where to find it. Examples of some runtimes that I have:
V3 Character addons (includes the install of V3 and her morphs)
V3 Clothing
M3 Character addons
M3 Clothing
Aiko
Plants
Backgrounds/Environments
Angels and Faeries
Mermaids
Christmas
Halloween
Lighting
Poses
Props
Hair
Vehicles
Animals
Miscellaneous (for anything not large enough to warrant having it's own runtime IE: Millennium Dragon)
A runtime is a runtime is a runtime. They are all set up using the same structure and they all function the same. All an "external" runtime is is a runtime folder that sits outside of your Poser folder. It doesn't need any special consideration and it doesn't need any special set up or any special way of installing the folder. You treat it just like you do your main Poser runtime.
Another way you can do it is instead of using multiple external runtimes, you can set up separate sub folders inside your main Poser library folders.
For example, inside the library/character folder, you could set up sub folders for:
V3 Clothing
M3 Clothing
Aiko
Plants
*You can further sort them by adding more sub folders to the inside of those, for instance:
Inside the V3 Clothing folder you could create sub folders for each outfit*
In the library/pose folder you could set up sub folders for:
V3 Clothing
M3 Clothing
Aiko
Poses
*You can further sort them by adding more sub folders to the inside of those, for instance:
Inside the V3 Clothing folder you could create sub folders for each outfit: For example:
Morphing Fantasy Dress
Morphing Cocktail Dress
Morphing Starlette Dress
etc
etc
etc
Then when you install a texture for those outfits you put the texture inside the folder for the dress/outfit it belongs to. This way all of your textures for the MFD are inside the folder called "Morphing Fantasy Dress" and way easy to locate :)
*Another thing I do to help me find things is naming continuity. I discovered quickly that merchants don't always name their folders the same thing from one library folder to the next. That doen't help me to find something when the folder inside the character folder is called "jane's dress", while the folder inside library/poses is called "dress MATS" or "smith_dress". So I rename ALL of the folders that the item is creating to something I will recognize when I look at it IE: "Jane's Bride Gown". That way when I want to use that outfit, I can look through all of the library folders to see if I have other folders called "Jane's Bride Gown" that I know go with that dress.
TIP: Never install or unzip a package directly into your runtime folder. Do it to a folder on your desktop. Browse the folder, organize it the way you want, then move the runtime/contents to it's final resting place in your runtime.

How do you guys keep order in the Library? Everything I've ever purchased from Renderosity, DAZ, and CP I've extracted into my Poser 7 folder.
Now my Library is a confussing mess of figures, clothing, and hair!
Any suggestions on how to maintain order in the Library?
