Subject: V2 Eyebrows and Eyelashes ... Again

BAM ( ) posted Mon, 21 May 2001 at 5:09 PM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 5:01 PM

Okay, folks, I am simply not getting it. All I want is relatively normal, eyelashes, and hair colored eyebrows for V2. In general my characters are viewed full body and sometimes with multiple characters, so the exquisite detail and lengths some of you are going to I don't think is necessary. I would prefer to have normal looking eyelashes and eyebrows without texture maps, bump maps, and transparencies because those take up additional memory and slow things down considerably. What are the appropriate settings for BrowsGone? Is this just an on/off (0/1) switch or do the negative and decimal values have function? Since the limits are set to from 100,000 to -100,000 it makes me think that there's more to this (I put in 25 and got some very strange stuff). A value of 0.5 does not seem to make the eyebrow 1/2 of the catapillar and -1 makes the brow pop off the head. What is (are) the proper setting(s) to get thinner eyebrows and appropriate looking eyelashes without texture, bump, and transparencies? Why under Render Materials is there an Eyebrows (2nd on list) Uppereyebrows (9th on list), and Eyebrows again (20th on list)? What do each of these affect? I have tried experimenting with each, however, this seems to confuse me more. UpperEyebrows seems to control the color when the BrowsGone setting is at 0 and Eyebrows (2nd on list) when the BrowsGone is set at 1. If I have to use texture maps, bump maps, and transparencies to get things to look normal would it be best to buy the ones from DAZ? What are the appropriate settings for the Eyelashes to get something that is "normal" looking there too? Someone mentioned earlier that perhaps we need a user manual for V2. No perhaps about it! Thanks in advance for the patience required to address my questions.

Eyebrows (2nd on list) is the geometry that covers the eyebrow are on the surface of the skin. It should have a white object color and the same highlight color as the skinHead (I use true black), no transmap, 0% transparency min, max & falloff, and should have the Head texture (and bump if you are using them).

UpperEyebrows (9th on list) is the material set for polygons that will be pulled behind the skin if you set BrowsGone morph to 1.000. If you wish to keep the morph set to 0.000 and want eyebrows that stand out a bit (not thicker, they just make it look like their not painted on) you need to to make sure you are using a texture map and trans map that take advantage of the UpperEyebrows. Set the object color to white, set the min and max transparency to 100% and transparency fall off to 0%. Use a true black highlight color ans set highlight to 0%. Apply a transmap. (BTW, if you don't have a texture map that has the UpperEyebrows section painted, you can just set the object color to the desired color.)

EyeBrows (20th on the list) you can set to whatever you want, that material is not used by the geometry and won't do anything.

Eyelashes should have a black (or close to) object color and a true black highlight color. Set min & max transparency to 100%, transparency falloff to 0% and highlight to 0%. Apply a transmap. No texture map is needed.

Hope this helps.

I made a couple of browbeater morphs for Vicki and V2P4. I really would love to ask....Why are the brows so humongous, in the the first place? Is there a reason for that? Those eyebrows are the ugliest part of Vicki, and that, is saying something.

The brows are that big because the idea is that someone will use a transmap, and the bigger the brow area is the more room the texture artist has to work with. If the transmap is done correctly, the eyebrows look nice and thin, but 3D.

with all the discussion going on about these big ol eyebrows , I had to try a transmap for them, I think it looks a whole lot better with the trans as opposed to just making them disappear and having the flat look. If you dont have a transmap , heres the link for it. I dont know if the daz textures come with one or not, I havent looked into them.

JKeller, you are a WEALTH of information. I meant to tell you that 3 months ago. And you convey the information so clearly. Just thank you for all the help you've given me. See, I was curious about the 20th eyebrow too ;-)

Yes, thank you. 'Cause those are some brows that even Brooke Shields would be ashamed of. I have the transmap from Daz, and one that I made. Still...I wanna get out my tweezers, dangit. Let me check out the link. My browbeaters work pretty well...just makes them smaller, and more manageable...More like the eyebrows I see on people in reality. Okay...got that new transmap. Thanks.

For those of you that don't want to mess with Upperbrows in the first place (like me, haha), my new Victoria texture will come with four partial brow maps that can be pasted on to the main head map with a graphics program like PSP or Photoshop. One of them is blank as well, so that those of you who can figure those darn Upperbrows out can use them too. ;) I'll have it available for download as soon as I can. Thanks for the information too JKeller, you know your stuff. :) Take care! SnowS Hoping his pictures are worth 1001 words.

I do not speak as a representative of DAZ, I speak only as a long-time member here. Be nice (and quit lying about DAZ) and I'll be nice too.

Awe shucks, what are trying to give me a big head? I only know what I know because there are tons of great people around here who help out. I'm just a middle-man =). But thank you very much for your kind words.

Okay, I fooled around and around, and using TJ's trans map with a bunch of other settings I got it to work on the eyebrows. They seem to be a bit light, but I couldn't figure out how to darken them. The eyelashes, on the other hand seem to be a real pain. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for a transparency maps for those. Thanks for your help.

Check the freestuff for some eyelash transmaps under the Millie/Vicky section. Additionally, many texture maps for Vicky that I've seen actually double as an eyelash transmap.
