Subject: Making Dynamic Clothing using only Poser (HELP!)

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Tue, 26 June 2007 at 8:49 PM · edited Fri, 22 November 2024 at 6:24 PM

I was testing a theory last night, but unfortunately have hit a wall.

I was seeing if I could make a dynamic shirt for Apollo using nothing but Poser (no modelling application). I loaded the Apollo OBJ and used the grouping tool to create a shirt shaped prop from Apollo’s geometry. I then scaled the prop slightly larger to ensure it didn’t intersect with Apollo in any way.

The problem is, when I run it through a cloth simulation the whole thing falls to pieces. It looks to be breaking at the Apollo body-part joints.

My experience with Poser’s grouping tool is limited (roughly 48 hours :P), but is there any way to avoid this ‘breaking’ of the prop?

If we can hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominos will fall like a house of cards...checkmate!

Export the object and make sure you select the "Weld body part seams" option, and unselect all the other options.
When you reimport, you should have a single group.

I can't believe it was that simple! How did I miss that!!!

Thank you so much nruddock.

If you're in need of a modeling application, DAZ currently has a sale on Hexagon 2.2.  Only $1.99 for Platinum Club members.

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Tue, 26 June 2007 at 10:20 PM

Nah, I have a plethore of modelling apps already. That's a great deal though.

I was just curious as to what could be achieved using Poser alone.

It worked!

Here's a little something I knocked up for Apollo.

It required a little creative scaling, but it turned out quite well (at least I think so).

To reiterate, I used only Poser to make this shirt. No modelling application whatsoever. Just Apollo, the grouping tool, and the morph brush.

Now the proof of concept is done, onto something a little more interesting :).

Dang. That shirt looks excellent. I gotta try your technique.

Thanks madmaxh!

I'd love to see what other people come up with, and I'll continue posting any other clothing I make here too :).

Awesome stuff!!!!!
Is that Baginnsbill's (matmatic) procedural texture on it?
Love the way it looks!

You can also use magnets and waves to deform the geometry before exporting to .OBJ.

Inspirational!

What's really cool is the concept that if you way-warp your base character, he/she is going to need clothes that fit. What better way than to take off a group from the character's mesh, expand it a little like Claw says, export, import.....morphbrushtool, magnets, waves(?), shader textures, cloth room.......

Custom made clothes.

Nice one Claw.

Did you use shaders for the texture?

Old method brought up to speed to take advantage of the new tools. Cool.

A lot of the old P3/P4 clothes were created using the Main figure mesh and then we all needed object mover(sp?) to distribute the files between each other.

BTW you can also use the prop cylnder with the grouping tool and export/import weld to make dynamics too. Poser props are a bit low rez but that can be fixed too.

Here is one I did a few months ago to show someone how easy it was to do.

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Wed, 27 June 2007 at 6:58 PM

Thanks Beryld. I knew I wouldn't have been the first (by a long shot), but since I've only been using Poser for 10 months or so, and the grouping tool for around three days, you'll have to forgive my ignorance.

Connie - The texture is procedural using nodes...well one node actually. It's simplicity itself :). I've downloaded Matmatic, but have yet to explore. Too many irons in the fire right now, something I know you can appreciate.

svdl - Exactly! That's the plan :). Now I know it can be done (and incredibly easily I might add) magnets and deformers are the logical next step. You're really only limited by your imagination then!

If you make clothes like this, you couldn't share them right, because you started off by using the original mesh - is that right?

It would depend on which figure you used, and the respective copyright restrictions attached.

Anton has been incredibly flexible and open to sharing of Apollo in practically any way, shape or form. As long as you don't use any of Apollo's goodies for another figure, you're golden (as I understand). Although I'll have to confirm this with Anton before I even consider distributing my efforts (which would be free, of course).

I wouldn't dream of doing this for V4 though. I highly doubt Daz would approve.

Check out this thread. There is a tutorial in it.

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Wed, 27 June 2007 at 10:17 PM

That's a great tutorial Acadia (you always find the coolest stuff!) but it still requires a 3D application.

This method uses only the figure's geometry, not 'new' geometry.

Not sure, but that kind of sounds like you took what I said as bad thing. I didn't mean it in that way. I said I thought it was cool that you figured out how to take something old and use it in a new way.

Distributing was done with incoding, RTE is the newer app to do that. Objection mover was the original app, to get around the copyright thing.

ClawShrimp ( ) posted Wed, 27 June 2007 at 10:59 PM

Don't worry beryld. I didn't take it negatively at all :).

I'm constantly amazed by how much effort people were willing to put into Poser back in the day. Nowadays everyone just visits the marketplace and pay for what they want. I've gotta say, in many ways I prefer the older frame of mind. Why buy it if you can make it! :)

Yeah, I was reading the terms of use on V3 and V4 few weeks ago, when I was making the victorian stuff for V3, and one can not simply take their mesh and offset and tweak it without being in violation of their copyright. Or at minimum being parellously close. (Too close for my comfort)
Going from memory, there's a clause in there that meshes and their dorect derivatives may not be re-distributed.

So I always start with a basic shape and work inwards. Many times the layout of facets works out better for the piece I'm making this way.

I haven't sifted through Apollo terms of use to that level of detail.

That pretty much sums it up for me too. LOL I have even writen easy ways for how someone can do something thierselves and some will say, why don't I just do it for them, it's to much bother for them.

Here's a little update:

BJ over at the CP forums pointed out to me that the Apollo Skin Suit OBJ can already be found in Apollo's geometry folder. It's only the CR2 we're waiting (patiently) for.

Anyone that's interested in attempting to make clothing this way would be far better off using the Skin Suit rather than the Apollo figure geometry. Why?

Nipples - gone
Belly Button - gone
and most importantly...wedding tackle - gone!

Making dynamic pants using the Apollo figure geometry would have lead to a rather disturbing phalic bulge, as genitals are part of Apollo's geometry. Imagine that after a cloth simulation! Not pretty.

Also, if your desired cuts don't follow the natural geometry of the Skin Suit, just get it as close as you can. It will initially lead to some horrible square jaggies along your edges, but you can easily clean these with a very simple trans-map.

The only down side to using the Skin Suit is it'll only be useful for an un-morphed Apollo. Once Anton officially releases the Skin Suit this won't be a problem. Just PLEASE don't ask him if it's finished yet. Patience is a virtue.

I know this thread is incredibly old, but seeing as I've only recently re-entered the world of Poser, and that I am revisiting some of my unexplored ideas, I thought I'd see if I could revive it.

I followed the exact same process as before, only this time I used Daz's Freak 4. As the mesh is considerably denser than that of Anton's Apollo, the draping appears far smoother.

I had to go back and read the first page to get up on speed of what your doing. LOL.

Looks good. And as the M4 mesh is a higher poly count than Apollo, the cloth room would work and look better.
