Subject: Mac & Win encoder/decoder - advice please

Tiny ( ) posted Wed, 29 August 2007 at 5:28 AM · edited Wed, 26 February 2025 at 12:40 PM

Are there any encoder/decoder that works with Mac and Win both?

Any advice appreciated.

Attached Link: http://www.geocities.com/RTEJava/beta/

RTEncoder is available in an (unofficial) Java version which will work on either platform. The official download from http://www.rtencoder.com/ is Windows only.

Thanks EnglishBob.
I see the RTencoder2 is in beta now and almost done. It sounds promising.

Anyone know if  the RTEJava "widely used"?

As you may have picked up, there's no love lost between the author of the original RTEncoder, and the Java lookalike. There were some tales going around that the two weren't 100% compatible; although I don't know how true they are, or whether they've been fixed, that has probably tended to sway most people (i.e. Windows users) to the official version. On the other hand, as far as I know Mac users have no other choice when faced with an RTE encoded file, so I suppose you could say that it was widely used among Maccers. ;)

Sounds good.
I've tested the RTEJava now and it is very easy and straight forward. And since I need a solution for both platforms I think this is the way to go.
Will post and see if I can find testers for the Mac and Win RTEJava and my product.

Thanks EnglishBob for the help! 😄

it's true - OS X users are restricted to using the free RTEJava app, unless they've got XP/vista on a separate disk/partition.

EnglishBob, thanks for giving me a much needed laugh!

I wrote RTEJava because I wanted a utility like the original that would run on my old Mac G3 (Mac OS 8.6) and on my future Mac OS X  box (which turned out to be a Win XP laptop!).

I tried to establish a good working relationship with the author of the original, and intended to heap much praise upon both him and his app; unfortunately, he chose to view my version as a competitor, at which point the "no love lost " relationship was born.

The sad thing is that Java is perfect for a utility like this.
Cross platform without having to do anything much, rather than having hunt around for a willing programmer with a Mac.

Noel, I couldn't agree more, and not just because I used Java ;)

For a utility that most users will run once in a blue moon, Java is a good choice: somewhat slower execution times traded for very rapid cross-platform development time. An amateur like me was able to build a functional clone of another utility in a matter of weeks (would have been "days" if not for failing to establish the good working relationship with the other guy, and Xmas 2003 travels).

For some reason I thought the Rtencoder 2 would be crossplatform but it is not as far as I understand. So Java it will have to be then.

Thank you everybody for your inputs.
