Subject: .ewf files?

Acadia ( ) posted Fri, 31 August 2007 at 6:12 PM · edited Sat, 20 July 2024 at 7:12 AM

I am trying to download my purchases from the MP and instead of .zip files, the window pops up showing the files with .ewf extensions.

To test my ability to download .zip files, I have gone to several other sites and have tried downloading .zip files and don't have a problem with them at any of the sites I've tried, except this one.

I have made sure market.renderosity.com and renderosity.com have full privileges in my firewall.

I have cleared my cookies and my browser cache as well as my firewall cache.

I have also done an ad-aware scan (clean)

I have rebooted several times.

I purchased some things a week or so ago and was able to download those as .zip files.

Anyone have any idea why my Renderosity MP downloads seem to want to save as .ewf extensions today?

I don't know, but I'm moving this to the MarketPlace forum, so they can help you more.  an EWF file is a basic windows Enhanced Write Filter, and I can't imagine why a .zip file would be downloading as an .ewf file.  But, stranger things have happened!

Thanks.  It's weird that it's just this site that is doing it.   It's the reason I have to have my downloads reset,  LOL

I just purchased several items and although they show in my account as zip files...they are downloading as ewf files.   I sent an emailll...but saw this topic and thought I'd mention that Acadia isn't the only one experiencing this.

Acadia ( ) posted Fri, 31 August 2007 at 8:51 PM

OMG!!! Thank you!

I've been uninstalling and reinstalling my firewall thinking it was my fault!  LOL

I feel so much better now! :)

My purchases aren't going anywhere, and I'm currently on a break from Poser anyway (but I still shop, hehe), so I'm in no real rush. Hopefully they will figure out the problem and fix it.

LOL...yw  :)      I thought it was me...til I saw your post.   I have Vista Ultimate and thought perhaps it had something to do with that too.   Guess we'll just have to be patient and wait for an answer.

I fixed it!

It was a problem with my firewall.  I use "CA Antivirus" and one of the latest updates must have turned on the "email quarantine" for the .zip files.

I noticed that the download box was showing "email attachment" for the .ewf file.  I went to my firewall and played around with the email area.

There was a green checkmark next to all of the extensions so I clicked on the .zip one and looked in edit.  There was a box called "Quarantine all matching files", so I unchecked that and now I can download the .zip files here.  It's strange though that it wasn't affecting the .zip files at other sites, just this one.

Interesting...I use CA Antivirus, too...so I followed your directions...and am about to go and try the download again.  Xing fingers!

This problem is not just manifest on this site. This problem is something I have been running into right and left on the internet and wound up having to sign up for this site just so I could find out the answer on this forum as this seems to be the only place it is being discussed. I just hope that I did not open myself up to tons more useless SPAM from a site I may or may not ever visit again. I really hate having to sign up at a site just so I can see the answer in the forum just so I can really only just get more SPAM which is why I have the AntiVirus/Firewall in the first place.

Another Point

If you know what the extension of your file was supposed to be all you need to do is change the *.efw extension to the actual externsion it should have been in the first place e.g. change MYFILE.efw into MYFILE.exe or MYFILE.zip or whatever the real extension is supposed to be and the file WILL work. There is no real need to RE-download the file as you already have it. The only thing that is wrong is the .efw extension.

It is a problem with CA Anti virus they have been doing a lot of things that are really weird lately. In fact I have been turning things off in the program right  and left because they are blocking out a lot more than i care to have blocked out. One of the big things I have been noticeing is a message that says: <!-- Removed by HIPS FW----------------------> or something along these lines. This is the CA AV program doing this stuff. Most of it can be shut of by turning off the anti spyware part of the program AND shutting off (Uncheck everything in this section) the privacy section of the Firewall... Yes this will also get rid of the HIPS FW thing and will even make your web pages render correctly

CAV used to be my AV of choice but with all of the stupid stuff that they are automatically shutting off (or at least shutting out) I am now doing some research into other AV and firewall solutions... This however is very sad as i have been extolling the virtues of this product (CAV) and installing  it in client machines for over 12 years now while making the custmer get a subsciption to the service. Frankly it's either you get the CAV or you visit me and I charge you lots of money for fixing your computer and you still wind up buying the software it is that simple...

I'll leave this with the notify check box checked just in case someone has a pertinent question involving these issues with CAV.

Just wanted to let you know that changing the extension back to .zip from .ewf files did not work for me.  I tried that first and ended up having to redownload the files.  This is the only place that I have had this happen...I download from other sites and have never had a problem - however, being new to CA Antivirus....I'd always used Norton in the past....I won't say it won't happen again, somewhere else.

Thanks for your insights, however!

I've been using the firewall since it was in beta stage and called "Innoculate_T"  It was really good then and even when it was known as "e-Trust Antivirus". But since it's been changed to "CA Antivirus" while I stil like the virus protection it offers, I am tired of them messing up things like they have been doing.  I find that almost every site I go to I have problems with unless I add the site to my firewall privacy area and give it privileges.

So far as this site goes, if you enjoy art, stick around.  This community caters to the art and 3D graphics area and has a wonderful gallery.

Quote - Just wanted to let you know that changing the extension back to .zip from .ewf files did not work for me.  I tried that first and ended up having to redownload the files.

I too tried changing the file extension on the downloaded file. But I think I got an error when trying to open it saying something about "not a valid archive" or something like that.  I even tried .rar extension, lol

My firewall subscription runs out in the spring next year. I'm keeping my eyes open for a new firewall. I know I won't go with McCaffey or Norton's though.

I also find that the customer service has declined for CA Antivirus too.  When I installed the new version this last spring the interface was completely foreign to me because the last install I had done was under "e-Trust Antivirus".  I sent them an email with a list of problems that I was having and a list of everything that I had tried to do to remedy the situation.  One of the problems being having to add almost every single website I visit to my privacy area of my firewall to be able to actually see images and open menus. They sent me back and email parroting everything I had already tried.  I wrote them back and told them that I had already tried all of that, but I never heard back from them. I wrote them 2 other times since and never got a reply to those mailings either.

Now their updates are changing my settings and causing more problems.  The otherday I had problems downloading an .exe file from someplace and got that .ewf extension. This time I knew the problem and went right to my firewall and saw that .exe was now blocked too!

I remember those days, the Inoculate was free too and you could have it and updates for life... I would really like to know what happened to my lifetime subsciption as well...

I will check it sometime... My complaint was the fact that I could not read any of the posts w/o signing in...

This has happened to me as well even as much as telling them trhat I found a work around and tried to tell them but because the help desk service is crappy at best and they have  there own agenda I am sure they tried to get that forum to drop that particular answer...
- "Just wanted to let you know that changing the extension back to .zip from .ewf files did not work for me.  I tried that first and ended up having to redownload the files."
For this to work you must know what the extension for the download is...

What I said was e.g. (This means "FOR EXAMPLE")  change MYFILE.efw into MYFILE.exe or MYFILE.zip or whatever the real extension is supposed to be and the file WILL work.... It could be a .jar, .tar, .pkzip, .exe, .pdf or whatever but if you don't replace the .ewf with the CORRECT extension it will NEVER work.... You MUST know the CORRECT extension... Most web sites are nice this way in that they will tell you the filename and it's extension for this very reason....

Now imagine having (10)ten computers and having to deal with this on every single one of them and the fact that they update and change things and settings that I have already set up.... Never mind my customers out there that I have to deal with on a daily basis with these same stupid issues...

I could go on but I'd rather see yourt responses so I can help you fix this issue....

The AV Software has Scanned the File on Download, which will normally corrupt Compressed Files. In these cases you will need to Redownload, after turning off your Scan During Download. Check your permissions for Domains. Some programs you have to give permission for both, Downloads and Access. Access alone will not guarantee Downloads. I recommend turning on Prompts for Actions, so you can see what your AV/Internet Security is doing when accessing a site. You will figure out real quick which Prompts you do not need to see everytime and whether you can allow or exclude those options. Ones that you may want to allow from one site but not another, you  should keep as a Prompt.

Thanks for the info on this. I also use CA Antivirus and was wondering why files I have been trying to download have changed extensions.
