Basic Process, please keep in mind this is an overview, and that each of the steps can be done in more then one way)
Take the OBJ file of the figure for which you want to model the clothes and import it in yor favorite application. (Usually scaled up 100, 200 or 500 times from Poser units).
Plan out the piece of clothing (some people make a paper or a digital sketch, some work off of a photo ideas, some just wing it)
Model the piece in your favorite Modelling application. Mostly using subdivision modelling, or a combination of subdivision and spline modelling. Most people do it by modeling the piece around the figure exported in step 1.
UV map the model.
Create textures.
Group for Poser 'rigging' and export into an OBJ file (scaled down to a poser scale)
Import into Poser, and rig to fit the intended figure.
Import any additional morphs, and save as a figure.
Most of the time, there is some back and forth bvetween the steps, and some trial and error. There's a number of programs and utilities theese can be done in.
If one is working on it 2-4 hours a day, it probably takes about a week to create a medium complexity piece of clothing, with 2-3 morphs.
If anyone else wants to jump in and expand on the basic steps, please do it!!!

I have used Wings3d, it is free, (click on the banner in the Wings3d forum and go to the downloads section. I originally got hooked when I saw Dann-o's models. (link below)

The forum is rather friendly and have so far answered all my inane questions. I am still learning but improving all the time ( I think) feel free to give me an IM if you like. Jen
Unfortunately, I haven't found any headpiece specific tutorials. If I see something' I'll post it.
One thing that I noticed in our own rendo tutorial section are videos from speed modelling sessions. Those are always good to watch to get a general idea bout various "How to's" in modelling.

Thank you all for your imput. I hope this helps a lot of folks out just learning poser or got that itch to learn about making clothes. Possible in time have our very own Renderosity Poser modeling team. Why? I figure since the site was based off the original idea of a poser friendly site why not get some to contribute back to a community that has given so much.(Just a Thought). And those that do contribute do a wonderful job. Ofcourse I can't be biased because Renderosity Rocks and
We have the best artists around. Keep the thread going. Anyone got any Ideas on a modeled figure they like to see as a Renderoristy only figure ? Male or female? This is your forum lets talk about it.

To add to this thread, here's a list of places that I tend to visit looking for tutorials (in addition to what's available on rendo). Lot of these are for subdivision modelling, but there's a ton of other great info that can be found on theese sites.
Don't forget to look at rendo tut's first :)

Hmmm just thought about a character and he is male. Ronald from Renderosity . Ok maybe not
but you ge the idea . A Renderosity own figure.
head pieces...hmmm now here is a thought if you got one of the free modeling programs, saved a poser female figure as obj and imported just the head into the modeling program. this would give you the demensions needed on the head piece, atleast the part around the head. then just build off that untill you got a head piece that looks great. I used the same idea when making a mask for a poser figure. deleted all polylines except the face part of the head. Stretched the eye areas enough so you could see the original poser character behind the mask. Just little tips for everyone.

LOL, I think I can do the sneaking up on the little bugger part. But it will have to wait until the weekend, my days off, so I can concentrate on what I'm doing. Thanks, SGT!
I have no illusions that it will be easy and I have a lot of patience for the most part. I just want to make my own headpieces and jewelry for my girls. I have several packs but it's not enough and, hey, a girl needs lots of jewelry!

Oh, bummer, I didn't notice it right away. Looks like the links picked up color from html tags :( I can't fix it now, it's past edit time. Maybe if one of the mods gets a chance, perhaps they can fix it :)

*Yes Boofy that's what I meant . It was all in good fun. My style of humor is sometimes hard for people to understand. This being all text and no facial expressions.
Sorry if I stepped on anyones toes.*
Not a problem Demon Mage, my toes are intact! I threw my 10cents worth in to add a different slant,
LOL, I have people misunderstanding my weird humour face to face let alone in print! :woot:

I did a tutorial a while back.
How to make dynamic clothing with anim8or, a free 3d prog.
I include the link.
The trick is to let anim8or and Poser do the hard work.
All you have to build yourself is one simple figure.
Take it from here, or improve with transmappping or displacement maps to increase details.
Good luck everybody.

I'm not going to repeat others fabulous suggestions, so I'll add this to the discussion:
1- Learn Poser's way of naming body parts (examples: lShin, rForeArm, lShldr, head, rThigh, rToe, etc)
2- Learn Poser's way of setting up folders and what is contained in those folders.
Some examples:
Runtime:Geometries:DarkEdge:Helmet.obj
(the geometry folder is where most obj's are stored, I say most because some will use the character folders)
Runtime:Libraries:Character:DarkEdge:DarkAssassin
(the character folders are where most of your figures CR2's will be, when you double click on a figure in Poser to bring onto the stage...this is usually where they come from).

Let me first tell you there are alot of free modeling applications out there in the artist world.
Try all of them out. I can't tell you which one works best because it is one of those, how well do you work with the application. Some programs are easier to grasp then others. Once you find one that you can adapt to and have good results then contact some of the modelers within the community
some tutorials might be out there. Phil C. Is a good point of contact when trying to develope the nack for making clothes. Remeber it's important to not lose hope, building clothes or buildings from scratch takes experiance and patients. Lots of patients :) But with the right tutorials and help from fellow modelers you will be on your way to success and develope your own clothing line.
Just some helpful ideas from the sgt.
