Subject: Boredom

AntoniaTiger ( ) posted Mon, 08 October 2007 at 2:02 AM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 4:36 PM

I know the temptation of Poser-porn. I can appreciate the allure of all the clothing that is draped over our virtual models, and which seems designed for the bedroom or the porn movie. And I don't even want to criticise anyone's particular kinks, as long as they're lawful. But it bores me. Even Renderosity is overloaded with titillation. And now it's the sexy witch season. What would Granny Weatherwax say?

And the Wizzards would all be confused, have to have a long dinner, lie down for  a while, and send Rincewind out to get himself killed somehow...all in the name of pure research, of course.  Of course, those over in the High Energy Building would simply add another bit of cheese to the matrix and ask for the possibilities of elf ladies suddenly appearing while delivering banananananas to the librarin.

But, I digres...

Actually, since we're talking about boredom, what I find dull in the galleries is the fact that nearly every Poser image that appears is some form of portrait.  Very few Poser artists take the time to create quality images that are more toward illustration, in which there is something actually going on, and there is attention to things like composition and dynamic lines that lead the eye.  It appears that many are content to simply plop a Vicky on a background and render her.  In the search for "realism" (which is misguided, IMHO, since art is about creativity and imagination), people seem to have forgotten that there are other subjects worthy of treatment other than pretty women.  The same is true of the galleries at DAZ.  I was looking at the featured images over the past few months, and while most of them showed technical skill in terms of lighting and approaching naturalism, almost none of them transcended the "pretty face" cliche.

Ok, to give you food for thought, and to play devil's advocate....

  1. The "Pretty Face" cliche....  i'll start with this one, cus i'm still "suffering" this syndrome.  I wont claim to speak for ANYONE other than MYSELF... but i have found the world in general to be a pretty ugly place.  Even the models - while they may have features lovely to behold...... i've yet to find one that i could show my daughter as a role-model for the modelling world.  Anorexia, drugs, etc.  Its an ugly world.  V3/V4/A3/Sydney/Sarah/TheGirl/Etc - they aren't tempted by the "fast track" grinz - i can make them as beautiful, or as hideous, as i want - and because of the above reasons, as well as others, i tend to lean towards MY idea of beauty.

  2. Pre-Packaged Characters - Many out there prefer just to click and have a "pretty face" instead of playing "Spin That Dial!!" - there's nothing wrong with this, in my opinion.  I, however, rarely use the pre-made characters - they usually don't jive with what i have in mind.

  3. not all have progressed beyond the pre-made poses.  (i rarely start a pose from scratch... i'll take a pre-made one, however, and change it until its no longer recognizable LOL).  There's a plethora of pinup-style poses out there.  Do the math =D

  4. There a lot of folks inspired by the fantasy works of say, Boris, etc.  'nuff said there.

  5. I don't know about other folks.... but the male figures just make me giggle.  I keep trying to put them in my images, but.... sighs  they seem to have the personality of a limp dishrag - aven anton's apollo (and he (apollo, not anton) has more personality than the rest combined) (anton, thankfully, has a great personality)

ok, devil's advocate finished =D  Please remember, these are my OPINIONS, and your own miles may vary.

Rarer than a hairy egg and madder than a box of frogs....

Funny I was thinking the same thing. But all I hear is this is what vendors and others think the rest of us want to purchase and see. This is why I rejoice when I see a product or image that doesn't support the clone mentality.

Nasty reality!! There should be laws where all the ugly people that do not fit into the fashion industry's or Hollywood's definition of beauty and perfection are rounded up and sent to camps in some obscure place on the globe. Hidden away so the inner insecurities of the Übermensch will not be affected by such hideous beings. Why should those whom feel they are superior and without fault be reminded of such imperfections?? Shame on all those who refuse to wear rose coloured glasses!!  : |  : )

expanding on melikia's #2: If a person spends money on a pre-packed charactor and possibly texture, how best to show it off? Portrait. The biggest problem with doing the portait is the artist has to study the face. Study how the ligh is going to react with the various elements, eyes, hair, profile, background the list goes on. Any mistake is amplified because, excuse the expression...In you Face.

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

If I'm not doing the modeling of the character or the props (which I can understand, because it's a skillset that takes quite a bit of time to learn) - and I'm not modifying the textures - and I'm not even adjusting the morph with the wide variety of morph dials available - and ... I'm using canned poses...  And maybe I complete the circle by using canned lights, whether bought or freebies ... What of the image is actually mine?

no, wait - innit football season? like the L.A. raiders or dodgers or whatever they call 'em? the superbowl, tight ends, quarterbacks' sacks. punkinhead don't know what season it is. he be chillin', not illin'. but the purpose of any poser gallery is to allow users to post renders of assemblages of figures, clothing, props and lighting that they just purchased. any details that would imply the "presence of affect" are extras, beyond the scope of the software in its default use IMVHO. that's part of the reason why I dropped outta the criticism club. I just don't see 'em evolving beyond the "absence of affect", even after 10 years of looking at the stuff.

NVOAPWAB? (naked vickie on a pumpkin with a broom)

C'mon...I know that doing clothing is a hassle, and I know that lighting, texture, skin tone, musculature, etc. needs to be done so that it shows the character in the best possible way, but let us not forget that all these wonderful toys exist for a reason: to seperate the Poser addict from their available cash!

No, realy... this is an ongoing argument at my house, the NVIATWAS argument, and we have several graphic artists who work in different mediums, and we have yet to come to any sort of agreement.

Keeps us from being too bored, I guess...

Well, not sure if this applies to anyone else, but I know I'll often go to portraits as a sort of "ground state" when no good ideas occur and I just want to do something. I try to get story-based pics done as much as possible. Oddly, even though they take much longer to do, they never get much of a response, but that might be something to do with the execution :)

cedarwolf ( ) posted Wed, 10 October 2007 at 10:26 AM

It has been observed in our home studio that if there isn't a nudity tag, the image won't be viewed.  I posted a picture of a Beaver, yep, the small furry animal, posed on a love seat, gave it a nudity tag, and ended up being chastised for the image.

As Rosanna Rosanna Danna said on Saturday Night Live (back when it was still funny): "It just goes t' show ya...it's always something!"

I think that is more because those of us that like a well done picture get tired of sifting through galleries of default T&A to actually find one.
Which reminds me, I need to put you on my favorites list, so your artwork is easier to find - when i want to see something well done!
