Subject: here it goes again....old thread: why my renders look dirty?

softcris ( ) posted Sat, 29 December 2007 at 8:17 PM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 2:01 PM

well I came a bit late here/ there in the tread. but lately I'm experiencing some problems with right configuration for my computer's VGA and Poser. Final FireFly in the choice window,  high demanding lights, ultra high resolution ** **textures skins - still I got those dirty spots in the shadows area...
Now you guys sharper than I tell me one thing. My Poser is configure with the 'hardware shading' ..what is that?

an image is worth a thousand words.  How do you mean "dirty spots" ?
Hardware shading will only make any difference if your graphics card supports it I guess.  Mine has it set too for the preview but I don't think my card can use it

but I'm here pal ready to learn..so...if you can tell me where do I disable that I will do ND TRY TO RENDER SAME IMAGE and compare.

FireFly doesn't use hardware shading on the render.  The preview will though so you can't turn it off for Firefly because it's not on (if that makes sense)

The dirty spots may be due to any or all of the following, depending on your setup:

For Raytraced shadows, the Bias setting may be incorrect.  Too big a rate, you'll get horrible grainy edges.  Too low and you get render artefacts as the polys shadow themselves.  A setting of 0.25 to 0.28 is about as good as it gets for most things.

For Depth Mapped shadows, you should ensure you have a shadow map of at least 1024, else you'll get torn edges on the shadows.

You may also have bump or displacement maps set at too high values.  These can give all kinds of horrible black marks and distortions on an object's surface.

Also, remember that in real life, shadows are seldom 100% density.  You should experiment with values of 40%-80% for the greatest realism.

ok here it goes: I'm at Manual settings in Poser 7 sr2.

  • Min  shading rate ( I understod it means your For Raytraced shadows, the Bias setting may be incorrect.) so I corrct it to 0,26.

  • for: Depth Mapped shadows, I can't find where is it. But if is it in Preview Mode I have it at 2048 mb.

  • may also have bump or displacement maps set at too high values. Mine were at 0.000 !! Trust!

  • is that related to the amount /strengh of each light shadow? values of 40%-80% for the greatest realism. Please could you explain that a bit clearer? thanks.

Vor V4 at DAZ for other figures here on marketplace. It really helps much to make a texture real.
