Subject: D|S + Carrara6 vs Poser7: And the winner is...?

Hello 3D fans and friends!

First, sorry for my poor English.
Well I'm using D|S with complete satisfaction, and I'm going to take benefits of a late Santa visit to renew completely my old Characters librairy of beautiful models with lot of new Vicky4 up-to-date models. I just published my wishlist before checking a choice between these contents, if you are interested to know where are the pure feeling (not technical) preferences of a french guy, let you put a glance on it. Romantic comments are welcome.

So, (I'm not here to flood) you can notice with me that a little half of these new nice models take  incredible benefits from new rendering techniques of poser7, which are missing in D|S:

  • Textures using Skin-shaders nodes,
  • fresnel effect implementation,
  • Primary texture filtering.

The difference is not just a +, the difference is HUGE, killing. All the rest becomes obsolete and has now just  to fall in a meritfull oblivion.

Sorry I don't know how to put the image DOWN to the text, so I use a fake reply to continue.
Specially have a look at the light on the Nanette (it's her name) shoulders. Night and Day. Cloudy and sunny. Dull and brilliant, Sad and happy. just go to the market page, and type "Nanette" in the search engine to get the full size pic, and you will be convinced.

So, what about or poor D|S? Waste basket? Personnaly I'd prefered to spend (If I have had) $249 with nice stuff rather buying P7. After having notice that the $249 price of Poser7 in Europe is... 249 (not $!), after having lurked all around the Daz forum about this subject without finding the most little topic of worrying, after wondering that, even here, (a class upper forum regarding the level of consideations) there was  not really a lot of warning, I was about to decide the killing of sweet models from Santa's gift, and to buy Poser7. What a pitty! But, but...

but just I remembered a good old Software I got last year for $35 in a DAZ-promo bundle, CARRARA5, a software I never used, but which I upgraded for free to Carrara6 in my downloads room at DAZ, just because I like what is free.

And innocently, I opened the momified box, installed, registered, and loaded the software, and opened the "materials" room. In less than ten minutes I had got the answers to my questions:

  • Does Carrara6 manage procedural knoise textures? YES!
  • Does Carrara6 manage SSS (Sub-surface-Scattering)? YES!
  • Does Carrara6 manage primary textures filtering? YES!
  • Does Carrara6 manage Fresnel effect? YES!

Oooohhh! Here are they, my inescapable skin-shaders nodes. Why not build my figures (not full scenes, figures only, separatly rendered) in D|S as usual, and make final render into Carrara6 with these enhanced, rocky, killer, killer functionalities of the C6 engine?

So here is my question: Is it reasonable for me to spend time with learning the use of C6 to work around the terrific Lack-late-lag of D|S, or should I immediately renounce to a lot of my purchases for the price of Poser6?

Thanks for Your answers. I post this on booth Rsity's Carrara Forum and Rsity's Daz|studio forum simultaneously.

Good place here. Friendly, LocusSolus.

Have a look at the Advanced tab of the surfaces palette in D|S, especially the Lighting model option right at the bottom, or the free base shaders from DAZ (which are the same, but with extra settings available, or Pendragon's free shaders, or the non-free pwSurface shaders. Using those it should be possible to get much enhanced renders from D|S

Thanks RHaseltine, Effectively! I tested and got many different lightnings with "matte", "plastic" and mainly "skin" model which is very bright.  I think 90% of good renders come from the artist's skillfulness, and 10% only from the software features.

The best D|S advice I can give you is to take some of that money you plan on investing on new models and invest it in D|S plugins. Judging from the image you attached you might want to look into pwSurface(DAZ). Also poke throught the DAZ forums for the various free shaders like pendragon's excellent set which comes with an IBL capable environment light.

Rather than bolstering your model count look into these D|S empowering products...

pwSurface
Light Dome Pro
Studio Light Pro
Mood Master
Uberspot Light
Uberpoint Light

D|S might be free but is capable of awesome results if you boost it up some. On a similiar note Poser and Carrara won't magically make anyones renders better. Gotta know the basics and D|S is a great place to start. Post some art too, critiques help.

Thanks a LOT, ShotgunOd, you got the target of my worries at its center. I'll do exactly what you said. I have bought yet LightDome LE, Studio Light LE and Mood Master, which I use now every time, and shall add immediately all the others in my Daz collecting cart. Answers like this are extremely precious for beginners, saving lot of time lossed in straying in dead end way, and saving lot of money wasted in unusefull or inadapted products.
I got no time this morning to visit your gallery, but I'll come back this evening.
Good place, here.

Just try to use DS for a while, use it first without any plug-in to get used to the way it works, afterwards you may start using plug-ins to be able to do things you cannot (yet) do.

And if you have questions or stumble across some problems, just ask, you will find always someone to help you! ^_^

@Akkbour: Thanks a lot Akhbour! I won't miss to come with questions unsolvable  by my own means. I took the Daz artists guild's URL from the ShotgunOd's post just above, where you seem log your works, I'll not fail to watch your show room at my next visit there. Freindly, LocusSolus.
