What does it fasten?

If indeed it does!

Not sure. I would wager the metal ribbing is texture for better friction when pressing with a finger.

I wouldn't think so ... it doesn't have holes for the thread. 

It doesn't seem the right color for a coin. 

It could be a chocolate coin ... but since one of the hints was that everybody on renderosity has one ... that might be a guess ... but wouldn't be my best guess. 

On my Canon A1 film camera, the rewind knob is also the ASA setting adjustment and does have a similar knurled edge ... but that would have the film rewind knob/lever showing. 

IOW, good challenge, thanks ... I need to rest and think ... more ...

My post above could be a little missleading, the item on here is not a coin although it is milled something like one.  The milling is there I think to make the item tactile
( Etymology: French or Latin; French, from Latin tactilis, from tangere to touch).

Not a clothing button, a button that you push. (some sort of release?) My guess is that the milling is to make it tactile for the tip of a thumb.

It looks like a 'push-and-shove' button to lock or unlock something... something like a cutter... or a ballpoint pen... or something ;o))

I love to take pictures around my work station as it involves very little movement, I have mobility problems.but that has nothing to do with the picture. the mobility problem that is.

So it must be something to do with my workstation area.  I'm sure I've posted a few pictures of my work station in my gallery.  Is it visible in one of them I wonder????

The hints have led me to a guess ...

My desktop PC has a CD-R/W drive ... with a volume control.  The volume control is a knurled control and peeks out from a small slot in the face of the drive.  ... Dimensions of the opening are about 17 mm X 3 mm ... since your "item is less than an inch high and less than half an inch wide or 20mm by 8mm" ... and mine is about 1/2 that size ... I'm still not sure. 

Could it be the volume control on the CD drive of a PC? 

OTOH, you have already said that the item in your image does not rotate and the volume control does rotate (or at least ... slide) ... soooo .... maybe its the play or eject button.

Close, very close, it has already been established it is a POWER button, what does it power.  Is it that obvious that nobody can see it?

It sure seems like you are all in the dark, no not a light switch, I have a window just above my desk.  Not a heater, although the central heating switch is on the wall next to me.

Honestly it is so blatently obvious.  Think! Go through the process yourself.  You come down the stairs and enter your den which is lit and warm, your camera is in the corner, you pull out your chair and sit.  What is the first thing you do??????

An odd looking PC power button to be sure, but I am used to the Apple variety...

Actually, I prefer the aluminized mylar shower caps ... they are far less likely to tear than the usual hand-made tinfoil caps. 

At the drug store (chemists), if I saw magnetic copper bracelets, I would inquire about the aluminized mylar shower caps -- all of those items should be together ... since they all work on the same principles.

You might be right at that TwoPynts, the wife keeps telling me to vac the comp, trouble is I do it in stages a bit like the Forth Bridge.  Last week I actually took every key of my keyboard and gave them a wash, I think this weekend I will strip down the tower and give it a vac out, I can se dust build up on the fan.

I enjoyed this last couple of days, I don't go on the forum enough, thats something else I must rectify.

BTW Jeff,

I could see that in your computer work area (I peeked into your gallery), that you have some power strips with an On/Off switch for each outlet -- please tell me the manufacturer's name and model number.  Even though the model you have won't work here, I may be able to find the USA equivalent.  Thanks.
