Well I guess this is down to me to get this one started.   So here you are, I must say that this is a macro and the full size of the item is less than an inch high and less than half an inch wide or 20mm by 8mm.  At a guess I would say everybody on RR has one in one form or another.

TwoPynts ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2008 at 11:56 AM

It is a button! ;']

JeffG7BRJ ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2008 at 12:00 PM

I was looking for a little more than that really.

Where are the button holes?

What does it fasten?

If indeed it does!

TwoPynts ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2008 at 12:04 PM

Not sure. I would wager the metal ribbing is texture for better friction when pressing with a finger.

All I can say is keep guessing, close but not close enough.  Check out my lates post here
http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1622598&member  I must stress though this one is not a coin. although it is milled like one.

MGD ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2008 at 12:44 PM

I see that JeffG7BRJ gave us an interesting puzzle.

I see that TwoPynts gave a quick response that,

It is a button!

I wouldn't think so ... it doesn't have holes for the thread.

It doesn't seem the right color for a coin.

It could be a chocolate coin ... but since one of the hints was that everybody on renderosity has one ... that might be a guess ... but wouldn't be my best guess.

On my Canon A1 film camera, the rewind knob is also the ASA setting adjustment and does have a similar knurled edge ... but that would have the film rewind knob/lever showing.

IOW, good challenge, thanks ... I need to rest and think ... more ...

My post above could be a little missleading, the item on here is not a coin although it is milled something like one.  The milling is there I think to make the item tactile
( Etymology: French or Latin; French, from Latin tactilis, from tangere to touch).

TwoPynts ( ) posted Thu, 21 February 2008 at 1:09 PM · edited Thu, 21 February 2008 at 1:15 PM

Not a clothing button, a button that you push. (some sort of release?) My guess is that the milling is to make it tactile for the tip of a thumb.

Or finger.  It is not round nor does it rotate.

Right, I can make that out from your photo. It looks like it may push inward though.

It looks like a 'push-and-shove' button to lock or unlock something... something like a cutter... or a ballpoint pen... or something ;o))

I love to take pictures around my work station as it involves very little movement, I have mobility problems.but that has nothing to do with the picture. the mobility problem that is.

So it must be something to do with my workstation area.  I'm sure I've posted a few pictures of my work station in my gallery.  Is it visible in one of them I wonder????

Sorry this was a red herring I have been and checked it is not visible in my gallery.  Sorry.

The hints have led me to a guess ...

My desktop PC has a CD-R/W drive ... with a volume control.  The volume control is a knurled control and peeks out from a small slot in the face of the drive.  ... Dimensions of the opening are about 17 mm X 3 mm ... since your "item is less than an inch high and less than half an inch wide or 20mm by 8mm" ... and mine is about 1/2 that size ... I'm still not sure.

Could it be the volume control on the CD drive of a PC?

OTOH, you have already said that the item in your image does not rotate and the volume control does rotate (or at least ... slide) ... soooo .... maybe its the play or eject button.

Close but still not 'On the Button' as the saying goes.

a button on a electronic device? How about your camera?

Question the question. Answer the question. Question the answer...

I wish I knew what I was gonna say :oP

No not for my camera.  It is a power button though. but you are 'Not on the Button' quite yet.

A Watch Screw Button Thingy
(Not round , Damn)

JeffG7BRJ ( ) posted Fri, 22 February 2008 at 6:48 AM

We have established quite a bit here.

It is a button of sorts, not for clothing, it is not round it does not rotate, it is tactil for use by finger or thumb, it is not on a digicam, it is not on a camera, it is however a push button, it is a power button.  All this as been said.

The last clue is the 'first thing I do in the morning is press this button.'

ColdWarTendencies ( ) posted Fri, 22 February 2008 at 7:13 AM

Alarm Clock Button (Snooze)

Close, very close, it has already been established it is a POWER button, what does it power.  Is it that obvious that nobody can see it?
The first thing I do every day when I enter my den is press the power button on my ?????????

MGD ( ) posted Fri, 22 February 2008 at 8:14 AM

Is it that obvious that nobody can see it?

Maybe the reason I can't see it is that I'm in the dark.

Is ti the power button for your desk lamp, or room light ...

Or is it the power button for a small heater in your den?

TwoPynts ( ) posted Fri, 22 February 2008 at 8:14 AM

Wall switch for the lights? If so, that is the oddest one I have ever seen. ;']

JeffG7BRJ ( ) posted Fri, 22 February 2008 at 8:21 AM

It sure seems like you are all in the dark, no not a light switch, I have a window just above my desk.  Not a heater, although the central heating switch is on the wall next to me.

Honestly it is so blatently obvious.  Think! Go through the process yourself.  You come down the stairs and enter your den which is lit and warm, your camera is in the corner, you pull out your chair and sit.  What is the first thing you do??????

ColdWarTendencies ( ) posted Fri, 22 February 2008 at 8:25 AM

It is in this statement.  I have to press this button to comunicate with the world.

Nobody so far has been 'On the Button'  The item is in the above statement and it is the first time it has been mentioned as an entity.

Is it to turn your PC on?

Is it to check for messages on your ansaphone?

Is it to turn your communicator on and ask to be beamed up to the mother ship?

I sure love option number three but I must give my vote to option one. (forgot my tinfoil hat today, darn!). :-D A PC Power Button...

An odd looking PC power button to be sure, but I am used to the Apple variety...

I see that markablue liked the option behind door # 3 ... even though,

forgot my tinfoil hat today

Actually, I prefer the aluminized mylar shower caps ... they are far less likely to tear than the usual hand-made tinfoil caps.

At the drug store (chemists), if I saw magnetic copper bracelets, I would inquire about the aluminized mylar shower caps -- all of those items should be together ... since they all work on the same principles.

You might be right at that TwoPynts, the wife keeps telling me to vac the comp, trouble is I do it in stages a bit like the Forth Bridge.  Last week I actually took every key of my keyboard and gave them a wash, I think this weekend I will strip down the tower and give it a vac out, I can se dust build up on the fan.

I enjoyed this last couple of days, I don't go on the forum enough, thats something else I must rectify.

Cheers! Jeff

I se that JeffG7BRJ said,

Congratulations MGD it is indeed to turn my pc on,

Thanks

BTW Jeff,

I could see that in your computer work area (I peeked into your gallery), that you have some power strips with an On/Off switch for each outlet -- please tell me the manufacturer's name and model number.  Even though the model you have won't work here, I may be able to find the USA equivalent.  Thanks.

I believe it is now your turn to try our investigation skills.

OK, I'll start a new thread, "What On Earth [WoE]? Feb 22, 2008 Noonish ..."

Good luck
