Subject: cannot load poser 7 on new vista computer

So I quickly became addicted to poser and that meant I had to buy a more powerful system. Today I bought an AMD Athalon64x dual core 5600+ with 3.2 MZ and 3 MB of Ram, with a Nividia geforce 6150 graphics card to get started. It is running on the latest fix of Vista (it installed a bunch of upgrades when I fired up the machine) and is on a newly installed D-Link network with my old computer.
When I went to load Poser from my cd-rom I got the error message. "The requested operation requires elevation" What the heck does that mean? The program refuses to load, it won't even get started.
I know the new Cd-Rom is fine because I just used it to load on Microsoft Enterprise 2007 suite. And  I just loaded Poser onto a second drive on my old machine and it worked fine, so the disk is not corrupt.
I can only figure there must be some glitch with Vista. Anybody got some idea on how to fix this?? I would be ever so grateful.
I was hoping to have some fun with the 4 day long weekend playing with the new toy but it looks like crap now :-(

If's not a glitch, it's a security feature. Ordinary users are not allowed to install programs, and that's what is happening here.
If this computer is not used by multiple users, you can turn of User Account Control, which is causing your trouble. But if it is, you'll have to start the Poser 7 setup in a different way:

  • cancel the splash screen you get when you put in the CD;
  • using Windows Explorer, browse for autorun.exe on the CD
  • right-click autorun.exe and choose "Run as administrator"

That'll get Poser 7 installed just right.

Another tip, DON"T install Poser 7 under C:Program Files(x86) or C:Program Files (depending on your Vista version, 64 bit or 32 bit). Install it to a separate folder outside of the Program Files folder. Extra content you install will then always be available, even if you log on using another user name.

The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter

I had the same problem.  The homepage forum or help section had a known problem for installing Poser. They said it might also seem to hang. This is not forever but it could take 10 minutes for the installation to start. Then you're good to go.

Before you even install Poser, head over here, and slowly work your way through the vista tweak guide you'll find it much easier to then use, and a bit faster as well.

Wow, thanks for the rapid response and great advise. I got Poser to load no problem but now I cannot manually install files into Poser 7directory. So my post of today if you think you can help. It follows:

Wow. thanks to all you people who answered my question about loading poser into Vista. It worked just fine. Excellent article on 99 tips for vista!!
So I loaded poser but put it into the program directory because it seemed that once I had freed User Account Control the programs would load. This may have been a big mistake because now I cannot manually install several programs.
So I have two big and related questions:

  1. I have to manually load several zip packages into poser 7. In windows xp all I had to do was unzip the folders into the Poser 7 directory and it loaded them. But in Vista it will not extract the files when I do that. How can I make vista extract those files?
I have already turned off User Account Control, which I needed to do to load poser.

  2. How do I give users Roxanne PC full control?
How do I sign on to be the administrator?
e.g. when I try to delete a folder with runtime files that did not load properly from Poser 7, it tells me I need permission to do so. I have tried to set the security settings so that users have full control but it won't let me affect that - I get a blank form to fill in saying "enter object name to select" What is that? or it tells me that user Roxanne has full control but says properties not inherited from anywhere.

I am not sure that I can just delete poser and start over loading poser into the base directory because it seems as a user I don't have the authority to remove the program

Did you go through those vista tweaks I gave you the link to? Both of those questions were answered there.
