Subject: Are Rem files and Hide channel files really needed?

chris1972 ( ) posted Fri, 28 March 2008 at 2:36 AM · edited Sun, 10 November 2024 at 9:19 AM

I'm in the final stages of packaging a new v4 figure for sale here at Rendo.
My injection morphs and unhide channel files are all set up. Are Rem files and hide channel files really needed. They seem like wasted effort and space. If you want another figure you can just load another figure. And also why would you want to hide channels after injecting custom morph targets?
In my work with Poser I never use them and dont really see the point.

I would appreciate some opinions

Well personally I use Rem's quite a lot!
I inject a character and then I might change my mind and realize that the character isn't right for the scene so I'll use Rem to go back to default before Inj another more suitable character!

Hide channels I also find useful, Xurge has them with his outfits and they're a lot quicker to use than going into the Hierarchy editor to do the same thing!

So short answer for me is "Yes they are"

I only just once used a Rem just to see if it  actually worked. Now I clean them out of folders just so I have less stuff to wade through.  I just inject another character pose on top of the current one if I change my mind. I don't see why you need to actually remove one first when you can just to swap it to another.
The only time I would find a Rem pose useful is if I'm mixing a purchased character into a custom morphed character and it doesn't work well. That's not something that many people do I would imagine... and for immediate disasters like that there is always an 'undo'.

As for hiding things I personally do find the Hierarchy editor faster to access than surfing through my Library folders to the relevant one.  Also because the Hierarchy Editor responds faster than a pose file does on my set up... there is always that little lag Poser seems to do before actually applying the pose.  Irritating if i want to hide a few things at a time.

Because it doesn't always work correctly, I've injected over the top before and ended up with a character that had a face that looked like it had been hit with a bus!!
That's why I always use the Rem pose first!

I dont understand the connection between open channels Say PBMCC_01 and the hierarchy editor.
What do they have to do with each other?

I misunderstood what you meant by 'hiding channel files' and though you meant those 'hide' this or that pose files that many merchants include.

The DAZ mechanism of having a separate show/hide pose file and inj/rem pose file is not necessary. It's easy to incorporate the visibility of the channel into the inj/rem pose itself.

REM poses are necessary. If written right, an INJ pose only affects the channels it really needs (in your case the channel(s) PBMCC_0x), and no others. So if another INJ pose is applied after your INJ pose, your settings will be preserved. Which is often not what the user meant.

So - include those REM poses!

The Hierarchy manager has no especially useful connection to channel data that I am aware of.  While you can see parameter data (channels and their values) from Hierarchy Manager if you enable the Show All Parameters checkbox, I think most people are more comfortable working with the Parameter Dials window.

Why are you unhiding channels in the first place?  I don't know that that is anything most people will value.  I don't, although maybe other people have a different opinion.  While this is sometimes useful for things like scaling individual bodyparts in V4 (e.g. the fingers) it isn't a day-to-day necessity, and not for partial body morphs at all (PBMCC*).  Again other people may have different opinions.

Like the others, I feel that REM poses are a good indicator of polished, quality work.  I don't feel they're any harder to do than the INJ pose in the first place, so if you got that done imo you should go the extra mile (or extra bit of text editing in this case) and handle it.  Getting unwanted morph data out of a figure is otherwise a bit troublesome, more than is really needed if you take this step when you package your morphs.

Thank you all for your responses.
As a result of your feedback I have included a Rem pose that removes the injected morphs and hides the community content channel on only the effected actors.
"Why are you unhiding channels in the first place? " I'm injecting morph target deltas, the tutorial I'm following says you need to. I tried it first without unhiding them because I figured it wasnt needed also, but several actors such as  chest, abdomen and hip woudn't take the injections without unhiding. After I included the unhide script all my morphs worked perfectly.

May I also recommend an REM that restores the character to its default?

The only times I have ever use REMs is to try undo INJ poses that also memorize, thereby preventing me from using the  restore option to set a figure back to its default state.
