Subject: Somthing wrong with my Reipus!

zai ( ) posted Sat, 05 April 2008 at 3:25 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 11:39 PM

Anyone had this problem? I've opened the texture jpeg and resaved it. It looks fine. I don't see any weird nodes attached to it in the material room, just a image texture and a bump. I've even changed the jpeg name to be sure it isn't cached somehow and made it a different color to be SURE it was picking up the right skin. All I get is rainbows. I think it's got to be something in Poser but danged if I know why it's doing this. It's like the skin texture has its headers saved wrong and possibly turned weird or sized wrong. Ain't he cute though? I love this whole set! wongweepus.jpg

Are you certain the texture you're using is mapped the same way as the model?  Did the model come with a texture template?  Have you compared the texture template against the texture map that you have set up for the model?  To me it looks as if the UVmap for the model is quite different from how the texture bitmap is laid out.

Hrm...no it was a freebie so I dont think it came with a template. This is the little guy that came with Teo and Telka here in the store. I bought the set and downloaded all the freebies from Nursoda's site. Think I will shoot him an email if I can't find a template or maybe try running UV mapper on it and see what I can see. zai • edit: Newp...no template - just redownloaded and checked, It does say use MacConverter, which I believe I already did with everything. Must have since the rest of it loads properly...the pack and the saddle, etc.

Did you render this with the firefly and raytracing on? Some materials only work with firefly and raytracing. i get this look if i don't have it on worh some textures.

yeah..I remember it, possibly as a stuffed toy, though. There's another critter something like this...be back soon, and I find it. In fact, it was called 'It', if'n I remember rightly...;)

I's by F-Wizard, and is called 'It'. The one you have is in a folder called 'digital'...and the thumbnail looks like it's striped...

I can't find the web page for the critter, but I think it was in Freestuff.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Can you point me to it?  I could look at how it is UVmapped and incidentally make a template for you if you like (publish it to freebies), not a big deal for me.
edit: is this it?

This is what I get... Looking at how it is UVmapped and how it renders for you, I think perhaps you even have the correct texture, but some material setting for the Skin material zone of the character is different (wrong).

This is what the materials settings show as for me... in your render I think I recognize parts of the tex (the toes) but they don't seem to be positioned or scaled right.  Can you show a screenshot of materials settings like this, from your side?

Here's a texture template for you:

Wow...why thank you very much! Been so busy with store stuff I haven't had a chance to get back to this. Yep, thats him..he looks great there! Yep, you're exactly right...its like it's all twisted around. Here's some shots of how mine is set up. When Iget a few minutes I will try out your map and maybe bring him back in by himself and see what happens. zai

Settings: I don't notice much difference, except in the ID and a bit in the bump strength. But I don't think those would do it.

Can you show a copy of the actual texture image reipus.jpg?  I don't t see anything wrong with your material settings at all, so I think it is either that the jpeg has become damaged, or somehow the model's UVmap has gotten damaged.
also while I don't think this is it, see what happens if you make bump strength 0.

The reason our bump strength numbers are different is that it is dependent on what your preferred measurement unit is set to, and is converted internally before it is displayed.  Mine is set to Inches, yours looks more like it is set to, uh, some unit I can't figure out (doesn't seem to be yards or meters but something quite large).

Your texture seems to be skewed somewhat... the original is straight, the rainbow one isn't, which seems a bit odd to me.
When you open the texture in an image editor (even paint will do) is it the same shape? (i.e. does it look like in the preview in your screenshot)

Weird... Well..I took your file, laid the original texture into it and just stretched it to fit, not caring about resolution, but just to see if it worked. And it did P6 using P4 render here. The one in the back is using the texture as it loads just from loading the figure. The front one has your map applied to it. Works, but might still be off. And the back one still looks twisted. They are definately not the same shape. The original is more rectangular (4500 x 3000 I think) and the template was 4000 x 4000 that converted it to.

Now...when I change to Firefly... Yours works, the original doesn't again. Also...I tried it both with and without ray tracing. They both look like this. I will try re-running everything through Mac Converter again from a new download and see what happens. Otherwise I guess the only way to fix it is to resave the template, although I already did that. But I did it in the same document. I will cut and paste it intoa whole new doc this time just to make sure it isn't something weird in the doc itself. Those rainbows usually indicate a warped image file in other things, so that may be it, zai

Err - you know, I did not actually look at the original texture resolution, that was a silly goof.  The proportions in my version are WRONG.  However as you have just shown, Poser can squeeze or stretch the texture into the neighborhood of the right proportions, it's just a pretty bad idea to do so.  I will go cancel my freebie upload since it's not a good idea to play with the texture proportions this way.

It seems to me something is simply wrong with the reipus.jpg file that you have.  My advice is re-download the original and see if that version of file works correctly.

Must be something wrong with the file, although it worked when transferred to your doc. The new download did exactly the same thing. Opening that and cutting and pasting it into a new doc didn't help either. Ah well...I will leave it be until later this afternoon and see what else I can think of, save rendering in p4! zai

I am kind of stumped.  Maybe the Mac version of Poser simply does not like non-square textures, that is all I can think of.  I'd contact EF/Smith Micro.

I've run into this problems several times and there is a simple fix. Just open the texture in a graphics program and resize it to slightly UNDER 4000 pixels for the largest side - 3998 usually works for me but if it doesn't try 3900 - that always works for me. Then resave the texture. It should now apply properly.

Oh that's a good point, this tex is 4500x3000.  You're probably right, although I'm actually surprised it renders for me at that resolution with no change - maybe Zai is running P6.
