You can look (Google) for free figures to download: there are open source ones as part of the Project Human series. Also, look for the Maya Doll, she is great and has a lot of custom items available. It may still be possible to download Poser 5.0 for free- there are many similar figures with the program.

Poser 5 for free? Where and what's the 'catch'? Free in the 3d world usually means one thing might be free, but the things you NEED to make it all come together are not free.

Sorry, it was offered for free last September, and only for four days. (I only found this out after I had posted this, oops!) It was the full version, downloadable. Seems that you can buy an OEM version for $20.
You can go over to www.daz3D.com and get the Victoria 3 (V3) base figure or SAE for free. She actually comes with the free content you get with the Daz|Studio download.

Actually V3 is no longer free, but M3 and Aiko are still free.  And with the download of Daz Studios you get a really nice set of freebies.  Not to mention the weekly freebie, and i think there is still a content starter pack for free there too.  And not sure but i think you can get V4 for free if you sign up at artzone.  Its Worth checking out to say the least.
